For the purpose of showing tbe wonderfcl growth of the United States as an agricultural country, the New York Bulletin hia compiled the following interesting table with the accompanying comments. The remarks are replete with sound wisdom : ' EXPORTS OF WHEAT AND 5 LOUR FROM THE UNITED STATE3. In 1871 tbe first year of tbe present decada, we exported iV330,00O-t and laet year tzo shipments rose to 1130,600,000. In other words the present export of wheat and Hour is tweaty-lour times toe value of that for tbe average of the twenty j ears end fog with 140. Tbia clearly shows what is the natural and inevitable drift of production in this country, and indicates where capital is to eck its chief employments and rewards. The competition between tbe agriculture of the two continents is at last coming oat in our favor; and onr true interest lied in affording every facility to the branea. of. industry io which our largest achievements are won. We have already outrat ktxl tbe largest grain exporting contrie of Europe, and the con trot of tbe world's grain trade is falling Into oar band. IC rem in only that we should ceasstotax agriculture to suttaia manu facture?; and then the prosperity of our farming iotrst will be sucn as to attract from tl Old World a vastly Urger population than we hve yet received from there, nd tbe draam of enthusiasts will become a rtality; tbe New World will eclipse the Old in ah tbe elements ot wealtn and power. R&7IEW OF THE HOME MARKET. Wednesday Evesisc, August 4. Th4 past wee1 has been one of complete interruption In trade movements, and ot wide spread calamity to a large section 0 the most productive states in the Union. Kains and floods have Interrupted transportation and commerce on the railroads and travel In the country, walle the riverg and streams, changed to torrents and sea, have overspread the lands, carried awvv h ripend crop, and desttojed those Uli growing. Speculation ba be n stimulated. The pnforeseen changes in the prost bare revolutionized tbe wheat mariet find
put a new aspect on the prospective price of wrrad. Fortunes have been made and lost by large operators, and excitement at times has been hign. WHEAT AND FIjOUR have advanced largely. In this market there U very little of either, and all prices Quoted are to be regarded as merely nominal, there having been bat few transactions for a week ; still tnere are buyers read with a demand at fall quota tlons, and how mach above can be determined by Riving them a ibatice. CORN is le8 affected in price than might be expected In view of the large destruction of the growing crop. But the Eastern and Chicago markets do not Justify a very marked advance. PROVISIONS remain firm aad quiet without much move
ment. The feeling was buoyant and conservative, and the sales which go on more or lees every day have not been reportel on the board. The GROCERY MARKET. Is thus rcpreteated by a leading boase: Tbe cracker bakers have advanced their prod actions lie per lb. The sugar makers of the ast are less inclined to a firm grip on their late high prices, weaken Qlic, if thereby they can make trade: they quote standard "A" at lO.dlOJ and off A" at lC?(SlOie, and other sugars on tbe same basis. Tbe heavy Importers aad Jobbers of coffee are happy men; they claim that if their co-workers in Km pay 1c more per lb 'or Oie goodi there than they are sel.lng for bere. prices most inevitably go upward; and It is proven that they are doing so. It' may not be safe to say that coffees will be lc per lb higher Mon, but that they are a good investment at ruling rates 1 undoubtedly true; eastern Jobbe sell at 18c for fair to 2121c gold for lancy grades coffees; the demand is light everywhere; tbe commercial papers of ttietut repeat this with emphasis and our local dealers are of coarse doing little in coffee or anything else. The syrnp demand is fair and price have not fl actuated lor some time pan. llie conlioous rains have been bard on tobacco, and unless well cared for, they have become musts : most open tackages have become puffy and swollen, thereby lessening their merchantable value; this makes .tobacco dull, but after a few days more or dry weather there win oe an active demand. There are no changes in prices There is a good, active demand for prunes, but domestic dried rruits are dull anatcucnaamased by worms. C'betse firm and active. Xtiere is nothing to be said about dry goods for the Dast week. Tbevare dull enough There was a large attendance and considerable exc.tement ou the board or trad . Chicago wheat opened at 1.29 lor ceptember advanctd to l.aVi and elosed a cent lower in t:e after noon. Chicago cjrn,72 cash, 74 heptember. No sales for lue reason that there was little or nothing to be od. lUaoutions are given for the buying price oertdn and produce, and tbe selling tr!cfs for pour and other merchandise. 1 DAILY RAILROAD OOXMERU.
