CORTINA AND IIIS COMPANIONS. MEXICAN RAIDS ON THE TEXAS BORDER ' CORTINA A DESPERATE FIQnT ARREST OF ,Tivvi-PTirKR TROUBLE EXPECTED.
A correspondent writes to the Chicago Times iron Corpus Christi: I have just arrived here Ircai a trip along the entire Mexican frontier, where the recent difficulties have prevailed. The entire border is in a state ot turmoil, and has been lor years. Indeed, almost since tie Mexican war. robbing and murdering going on unchecked, until the residents on the American side have began to despair of peace, or any redress on the part of our government Teias has been end always will be a great stock count r its vast plains and prairies being Leculiarlv adsped to cattle raising, and this 39ctiou, exter ding from Brownsville on our frontier to Ring-old barracks and Rio Grande City, In Starr county, 300 miles farther on, fcm long teon particularly noted in this respect. While the Americans under the' favorable auspices have been raising cattle, the Mexicans, under the protection ofthei corrupt officials, have stolen them, thus rui-inz all profits that might result IT, hor.FSu tnter prise, and doing much to
ward ileropulating the country. For years this has Veen going on, but latterly, erowin f'otn bad to worse, has b gun to attract the attention ot our entire people, and our government may jet ruove in the matter. butra have teen so long continued and so eu-Wo-Ui. that it is hard to name any definite tixe as their commencement, but tilö last snccsion o f raids commenced some
ix or eisht months ago by an invasion of so:iie 200 armed Mexican, who succeeded in stealing and driving off some 500 head of cat: Is besides murderiug several citizens. Co i una, who lor alone time ha3 b,een tellin the treat middle and lower cla?rs of Mexico b it Texa- rightfully barged to
them, himself instituted ana air-cn-a ims rai 1, ard v.-a naturally overjoyed at its success. This raid, it is since claimed, was a part of a project he has long had on foot. Hrn on the torder. with HIS EARLY LIFE parsed in frontier warfare, Cortina was naturally liiiiiar with the feelings of his people, and rvhen the war with Maximilian and the French was goiDg on, he made a number of friends among the lower order?, at the same time amassing an immense fortune bv stealing cattle. The war over, a large number of vagabonds who had served in the arcoy joined him in the province or state of Tamaulipas, where he made himaeli so powerful thai the home government.witb Juarez at its head, dare not touch him, and hA did nrettv much as he pleased. When
Lerdo became president he
Cortina, and the robber
nothicz more ruiea
carried matters on
him inttantly. He was then attacked bv five rangers, he resisting, until a bullet entered hit; brain. To sow the desperate character of the figbting.aUer the first round was fired from sharpshooters, when Lerma washot, the tiring was done entirely with six-shooters at close quarters. Two Mexicans were ridicg upon the tame horse, and shooting aa rapidly as they could. One of the mugers at whom they were aiming levelfd tU revolver, -it the first man in the breast, killing Dim. The ballet pasiog through his body, lodging in that of the second. B Til FELL TO THE GROUND DEAD. The fight lasted some half an hour. Eleven Mexicans and two rangers were killed. The rest of the Mexicans escaped over the m .
frontier. Cortina heard news oi this signal check to his system of robberies the same Aav. ami was lurious. vowing vengeance,
and declaring that be would lay waste the
entire border. The threats causea consiuerable consternation, and great was the joy rnrMMi when on Wednesday last Cortina
was suddenly and unexpectedly to himself
ibo evervDoay eise, arresMru uj of the Mexican homegovernmeut.and lodged
in jail at Mataraoras. Your correspondent, who was in Brownsville at the time, wa unable to. cross the river, but so quietly had
the Mexican tioop arrived that Cortina was not even advised of their approach. Naturally there is a great rejoicing at this, but some alarm still prevails. The arrest, it is aiii wa not mode on account of his diffi
culties with Americans, but on account ol
his home conspiracies, and cur people are still unprotected. Four citizens of Mexican origin have been killed in Matamoraa Bince Capt. McNelly'a light, they being charged with baviDg aided tho rangers. Cortlna's men threaten a rescue, and are robbing and murdering right and left. Cattle-stealing still goes on up the river, and his followers loudly assert that the arrt&t of Cortina is a mere larce to deceive our government. The people !n the meanwhile on our side are waxing wroth, and the war feeling is 6trong. Cortina out of the way by no meaus ends the trouble. Iiis followers vow vengeance under his lieutenants, who are more uisptrate and reckless but not so sensible men, and the danger to the entire frontier is great. This place is only a stage-day's journey from Brownsville, and the people e en here are excited, and unless some action is taken and that speedily by our home government, a large number of lives will be sacrificed.

Your average border Mexican has no fcisher idea or ambition than to be a successful robber, and when this became rumored around, he became firmly allied to the project, and the recent raids were the result. .For a long time these continned unchecked, ani tbe Irontier was almost desolated; but at last our people have raised comnaniesot rangers, and have been defending themselves.
