ülXANCE AND BUSINESS. WEEKLY BUSINESS REVIEW. GENERAL ASPXCTS. Itmv be considered that anything beyond the dull routine of the heated vacation fceas .n is not t j be looked for In business cirtles until tte tall trade. Still, the busing of the week past has not lallen down to the July apathy, tn"ouh the signs begin to show themselves. The country is quiet, but not set:led in business channels. While there are no excitements, there ia not on toe other hand a leeling of settled permanency in reeard to the courseof industry and trade. Neither capital nor labor are profitably employed up to t be capacity of the country, and as a consequence the nation 13 Undoubtedly fcuflVrin serious loss. In this regard, the nation differs cot irom an individual. If its meaua oi production and pro tit nre id .a loss must ensue. It 13 ft glow year, but fortunately not disastrous

House was established in 1S71, and now reports on twelve banks. It ia thought by
some that with a line Chamber ot Com

- j - - IMPORTANT DECISION
in regard to forged orders on savings banks was lately given In Buffalo, which interests
all depositors in those institutions as well as the savings banks themselves. The case
is entitled Arjnlebv vs. Erie County Sav
ings Bank oi Buffalo. In 1S7J, plaintiff had to his credit on books ot delendant, a deposit of 025 50. One Clarkson, stole the plaintiffs passbook Irom his trunk, forged a receipt in the plaintiffs name and drew the money from the bank. Defendant's bylaws provided that possession of the pass book was sufficient evidence of ownership to authorize the payment of moneys doe thereon, without further inquiry on its part. There was some evidence going to show that Clarkson, upon presenting the pass book at the bank, acted in a manner calculated to arouse suspicion, also that there was a material difference between th forged signature and the genuine one written in the signature book of the bauk. Defendant claimed that having over23,0C0 depositors, it is impossible that ..the cßitrcrj of the bank can recognize them Stil, Cr even become familiar enough with their signatures to detect forgeries, and that the bane is protected by the by-law before mentioned. The Superior Court of Buffalo directed a verdict for the defendant. Upon
appeal to the General Term the verdict was sustained, and the New York Court of Appeals has affirmed tee judgment with costs. The Magazine says: "This decision takts from the depositor in a savings bankcESof the important advantages of a bank account, viz., security from robbery. It is an unwise evasion of responsibility if deposits payable to order are to be traded like coupons, Payable to bearer, and It the money represented by a pawnbroker can be stolen as readily aa a bank note."

lieavicst ever known nere ana prices nave neen unprtoedemedly low; they are quoted at Jvac. higher than soweweeas tince. Baginaw and
Lrkc talt has been declining, our quotations are reduced to meet the prevailing market. The
trade bi nee the first week of June haa been encouragingly steady and this week opens fair. There Is nothing of a speculative nature in business and he who had the courage to buy larza

DRY GOODS.
Merchants report a satisfactory trade for the
week past and the demand for summer goods is ' still brisk. Linens and the exceedingly cheap Merrlmac percales go off with commendable
aiacrity, while prints in general and muslins are so low priced that the demand is a brisk and growing one. No branch of trade in tbis city gives
promise or a Detter recaomng at tne year n end tnan that ot dry goods, although His neoexsary to handle immense qaiuiiile of goods to accumulate a large aggregate profit. TUB WOOL IKADK has tcea unasuaüy large the past week for this season. One firm has handled at least 73,000 pounds, tut this spirt over, there will be a waiting for the country stores to Gil up again. The prices are unchanged, and buyers are . wholly at sea in their calculations how they Will Cme out, except so far aa current sales and shipments are made from day to day. Xhere is little to be said of JRAIN AND PROVISION'S Which remain doll and weak. JJo material actuations have beea experienced tor several,
days past. Nothing is doing for
cah in Chicago and the business in futures is slow. A err or a croak now cemes
from some portions of this state of weorll in
the wheat. The La Fayette Journal of yester
day savs: "Mr. Fiddler, of Laramie township.
yesterday brought to the city several heads of
wheat taken from his field, which are literally
alive with weevil." Similar reports have core
from other quarters, while a St. Joseph county farmer thinks his field has been invaded by the veritable Nebraska hopper. Probably he is in
error aVut that, but grasshoppers are eating on
bis wheat heads. That ne can see.
