THE INDIANA THUllSDAY. JUNE 24 1875
SHERIFF CROSBY'S LITTLE AFFAIR.
HIS ARRANGEMENT WITH GILMER THE i SHOOTING GILMER 8 CARD. At the time Sb-riff Crosby was bot by Gilmer, bis deputy, the Sentinel editorially noted the main points of the bond which linked the two. Th story is givsn in full In a letter to the Chicago Times: In November, 1872, Peter Crosby, a mulatto, was elected sheriff ot Warren county, of which Vieksbnr ia the caDital. lie gave a straw hnnri. which waa Accented bv officials of his wn tiartv nredilections and took Charge of hU office A few davs afer a number of hi bis otlice. A lew aaysai.er, a nuinj wi " hnmltimcn wars arrested oa the charge oi perjury for having sworn falsely as to the value of their property. After a t.'me several of the Indicted parties withdrew from the bond, and a new instrument w.as drawn up and signed by many of the signers ol the oM bond and nonresidents ol the county. This bond was considered worse than tue original, but waa nevertheless accepted, and Crosby continued in undisputed possession of his office until the death of one of the sureties, which, it waa claimed, undr the laws of the state, ivalidaU'l the bond. The taxpayers leigue believing; the colored sheriff utterly irresponsible, insisted that he should be required by the proper authority, the board ol supervisyrs, to irive a new bond, but no attention was nalrt hv that bodv to the demands of the taxpayers. On the 2nd day of December, 1ST 4 thA taxnavera met at the theater and - . Hit- I r i ' , ... i i 1 cussion. to wait on Crosby and other bond less officials, and request their resignation, Tho committee waited upon the officials im. mediately, and were Insolently and insultinff'v renulsed. When the fact Wfw r. Tjorted back to the meeting, it was instantly resolved that the taxpayers should repair to the court house in a body and there DEMAND THE KKSIGNATTON of dishonest and bondless officials, as there was no safety for the property of the county and no prottction for the records, which were lAiug daily mutilatoi and destroyed to shield the dishonest acta ol criminal cffl ciil. ilany of the ofacials fled from the court house at the approach of the tax -pav ers, but Crosby remained and complied with the dpu&uds made upjn him by tendering his resignation, staticg, however, tut he did so under duress. The next day the board . ot supervisor convened and issued an order thtt Crosby should present a good aud sußicient bond within twenty days or bis office would be declared vacant at the expiration of that time. Crosby immediately raased s cird to bs published, iw which bo denounced the taxpayers as a mob, buuditti, etc., and sent emmusaries throughout the county to invite the negroes to arms to overawe the whites and reinstate him m tlx office, using no other persuasive argument than that be was a colored man and a republican. On the 7th the attempt was made. with what result you know. Negroes marched upon the city irorn three directions, wers met and ropulsed, with many killed, wounded, anu caplured. Crosby was taken prisoner early in the action, and was securely guarded at a time when public excitement ran high, and when the incensed populace was eager for Crosby '8 blood. Liter, the twenty days allotted by the board of supervisors expired, and Ciosby, bavins failed to give bond, an election was ordered to fill the vacancy in his otlice. A. J. Flanagan was nominated by the tax papers, and elected to the office, and at once took possession and commenced the discharge of bis official duties. II 6 gave a good bond, ftcd was proceeding quietly in the discbarge of his duties when bis office was entered by a squad ol U. S. soldiers with fixed bayonets aud be wad lorcibly ejected. Subsequently Crosby made an arrangement with a citizen of Kemper countv, then a state senator. named Gilmer, by which a bond was made for Crosby as sherifi and collector, with the understanding that Gilmer should collect the taxes, control the otlice. and mako it all right with Crosby afterward. OXK OF GILMER FIRST ACTS was to discharge all of Crosby's deputies and appoint those of his own selection. Trouble commenced at once in the camp ot the faithful, and has continued ever since. Under the new regime all"ilrs about the court hom-e were dot, Improved. Robberies acd mutilation ot record continued, jail deliveries became frequent, juries were packed, and criminals went un whipped of justice, but the citizens maintained a sullen fcilencs and 'remained passive under their severe trials, awed by the pieseucs of the military, and patiently awaiticg th9 god day coming. These facts have been communicated to you disconnectedly by telegraph. On Monday (yeUerday) the cificUl relations of Crosby and Gilmer were disrupted and tbe compact broken. In the evening Crosby atid Gilmer walked into a saloon near tb'e court house to appear tbeir thirst. Crosby was leit standing at the counter while Gilmer walked through into a back room. A few minutes later the report of a pistol was beard, and Cro-by fell to the floor with a ballet la bis bead, Ic having entered just below the lets eye. The report went out tba Crosby hd attempted büicide by shooting himself, but later in the evening Crosby, who remained conscious, made an affidavit before Mayor O'Leary, who attended bis bedside, that he bad been shot either by (Jiliner or by bis dlrtction. Gilmer made his appear auce at the mayor's court this morning, but the prosecution not being ready lor trial be was released on bis own recognizance, to ap pear on Saturday. Gilmer published the tollowirg card in this morning's papert: A CARD. To the Tax-payers of Warren County : My appointment as deputy she riff and tax collector of Warren county having been revoked by Peter Crosby, sheriff of said county, tbis is to &lve notice, that In consid eration of said appointment. I male hin bond, and I Khali, at the earliest moment, cause the withdrawal ot the uames ot my friends from slid bond. Tax-payers and i hose interested re requested to govern themselves accordingly. The tax collec tions for the fiscal vear ot 1874 having been made by me, a full settlement with the state and county will be ma le by the undersigned at an ariy date, v ery respectfully, John P. (JiLMEr.. Mrs. Sheridan 's Lover. The Now York Tribun;- tells a sad story: Daputy Coroner Lee made a post mortem examination of the body of Captain Willitm II. Brown, ol the fifth United Srates cavalry, who com mitted suicide on Friday. At the time Cap tain Brown was dying ho spoke of a ring that be had swallowed. This ring was found. It was of plain gold, with raised, chased edge.. On the Inside of the ring was engraved "Be satisfied." The story of the ring was net ascertained, but it is believed thai the ring had been given to Captain Brown by the daoghter ot an army officer. It is said that be bad been much attached to the young lady, and it is believed that her recent marriage bad npstt his mind. and had boon one of the predisposing causes of his suicide. The inquest upon tho r mains is ta be held on Wednesday next." On the same subject the New York Star ays: 4Capt. William II. Brown committed suicide on Friday by cutting his throat, and he did it for love. If rumors be true, he was engaged to the young lady In New Orleans w do nas since become the wire or rtii. Sheridan. She sent Brown a ring with "Be satisfied" upon it. Brown swallowed the ring, but was not satisfied. IIa,then cut bis xnroai. Poor fellow!" -
