A DESPERATE AND DEADLY DEFEXSE. A DISCHARGED RAILROAD CONDUCTOR TURNS EXPRE-jS-CAB UOBBEK HI3 FIR3T VENTURE KXDS IX DEATH AT THE HAXD3 OF THE MESSENORR IN CIIARQE. The Sentinel of yesterday .morning briefly reported the crime and death of a railroad conductor near TVtf tytt'.e the night before. The 5uvjiriel specul to the Chicago Times from L'uu, graphically give3 the details: A Ix.IJ atte np was made to rob the express c.r oa tbe Pi'.Uburgb, Fort Wayne & Chicxgy r a l, on tho train tliat pastel this place at 2 o'clock this morain?. Alter the train 8trt3 from hero it does not fctop nnUl it reaches Forest, about thirty miles di.tar.t, and pas?? over a lonesome part of the country, but thinly settled, end, for a great part, covered by a large marab. While this train was speeding along over this dreary wasta, a robber disguised in a black muilln cloth drawn tight over his shoulders back of hUhead and over bis face, and tucked down in his vest, entered the car by sawing out one of the panels of theooor, and approaching George II. Price, the express messengar, who was dozing in his chair, DEMANDED HIS SURRENDER. The messenger jumped from his chair and drew his revolver, bat, before he could shoot, the robber fired at him twice, one ball taking effect in the right wrist, and the other wounding his chin and lodging in his right shoulder. Vv'hila thys was going on the express messenger took deliberate aim and fired, shooting the robber square in the forehead, killing him instantly. Atter the messenger was sure his man was dead, he pulled the bell connecting with the engine and stopped the train. Upon search no ctber meu were found who could be In league with the robber. Tiio train then continued its journey, and ivben it arrived at Crestlins tne corpse was delivered to the express company. Up to this time the mask over the man's face had not been removed. After it was laid out in the office, it was pulled aside, revealing the wcll- ' known features of II. C. Binkley, of Fort Wayne, ones a conductor on the roid. THE FEELINGS AND ASTONISHMENT of those standing around him, and who bad been his associates for years upon the road, can not bo described. lie had hitherto borne a good character, and wa3 generally liked .by those with whom he was thrown in contact, and the terrible fact that he bad so suddenly descended to an express robber could hardly be realized. lie was a member lu good standing or the Order or nea Men, and al?o of the Conductors' Brotterhocd. The affair has created irreat excitement, as when be was employed upon the roa t bis run ended here, and he was well known by everyone. When his body was brought here for the inquest, an Immense crowd wa3 at t,e depot, lie loaves a wife and two
I children. lie was d'scaargd from tbe road some tirr.o fci-ca for gambling. This wa3 the onlv real ice he was known to have had, and that contracted within a year. His f body will be taken to Fort Wayne for bur- ( ial. Piice was not seriously injured, but I continued on bis run until relieved. He V8howed very commendable pluck indeed, and should be well rewarded by the Adams .rJlxpreea Company, whose treasure be zealously guarded. Toe coroner's verdict reads, that Georgen. Price KILLED HIS MAN IN SELF DLFEN9E, ; after receivirg two pistol-shot wounds at ) the hands of deceased. Several days since I Binkloy purchased a diamond taw at this rla and told several persons that he
needed money badly, and must have it at r ail hazards. The Pittsburg correspondent I gives further particulars: The car was visited by quite a number of curiosity-seekers, f among whom were tbe officers and employes of the company. The robber or robbers, Lwith a hatchet, pried off the woodIwork around the lower panel of the car door, in order to make an opening for the band-saw. This being accomplished, I tbe lower panel was sawed quarely out of I the door, the pieces falling in3ide the car. Tha floor in the center of thecar was covered with blood, indicating that the fatal Vncounter occurred there, and that the parses wera brought lace to lace. Express liesenger McLean, who brought the train i) thia city; says the car was under charge if Price, who ruDS Detween Chicago acu Pittsburgh. Just as the train passed Laayette, )., Frice, who was teatea on a cnest eading, was suddenly confronted by Dinkey. WEAUINO A MASK, ho called upon him to deliver up the safe keys and surrender. Price jumped to his fett, and, seizing a revolver, retreated to the end oi the car. at the same time pulling the bell rope, signaling tbe engineer to stop the .train. The robor again called oa Price to surrender, but the messenger refused. Then j the thief drew his revolver and fired two 1 shots in rapid succession. The first tork r effect in Prix's arm and cheek, plowing its rvvay through tho flesh. The other struck him in the fleshy pait of the shoulder. "ffinHln trut Tlintlf-v VM determined to Ikill him, be lev ied his revolver and fired at be intruder. Bloklev dropped instantly, the ball having struck him in the forehead, 1 1 and died without speaking a word. "BARBARA FRIETCHIE" STRIPPED OF POETIO LICENSE HER WORE 8 WEBE, "BEGONE, YOU LOUSY PACK." A correspondent of the Cincinnati Com mercial tells the latest "true story" about the Barbara Frietchie business: William Tell di 1 not shoot the apple off bis son's head: Gen. Washington did not bark bis father's cherry tree with his little hatchet; I the famous historical exclamation or the Mexican war, "A little more crape. Capt. Bragg," ha been transformed, undv the "Sear chine: lamp of truth, into an exclamaI tion not naif so elegant, but far more forcit uie and to the point; and finally the news papers have discovered that Barbara Friet chie never put her bead out of an nn-etairs h Window and waved ths stars and stripes in ! 1 A 1 . m ri4 1 V . laoMcaoi o&onewau jacKson ana said: 'Strike, If yoa will, this old gray head, Frit marA vnnr innn trv'a flaw" i i auu now pejpie are k . , . , bezinnine to rro pounce liirbari Jtrietchis herself a mvtb. ytuoi jwfli j iiujgina.ion. unman ba ier, wnen once started oa the high road of fineptlctam, neirijr always trayais too lar;
and so it is in the present instance. There was a veritable, historical Barbara Frietchie, and a bravo old pUriot she was, too, and her memory ought to be rescued from the inglorious oblibion whch threatens it. Tho true story of Barbara Frietchia ha a wholesome, honest flavor of naturalness about it which makes it more forcible than the romantic and rather theatrical story of the poet. Ii is true that Stonewall Jackson never marched through the streets of Frederick, and never stopped at the bouse of Barbara Frietchie. and the good dams never waved a Union flig from an upstairs window at the rebels. Barbara Frietchie' own niece, who lived in tbe bouse with her, tells her true storv, and it is putetan'ially this: The good old dams wan loyal to her heart's core, and kept a small Union flag as A PRECIOUS THING IN HER HOUSE. But bands of rebel soldiers frequently passed near them, and IUrbara, fearinn her precious flag would be taken from her it discovered, hid it be twecn tho leaves of her Bible, aud kept it there. She would not have risked waving it from a window ior fear of losing it. She was very religious, and anxious above all things for the success of the union troops. Although Stonewall Jackson's men never came to her house, other band ot rebel soldiers did, and on one occasion when some of these wandering rebels were resting tbem?elve3 in nsr porch, the brave old woman gave them a piece of her mind in strong, homely words which ought to be historic, it t bey are not. Sho was somewhat feeble with her aze. an 1 walked with a cane.
As tho rebels were resting on her porch she went directly out among them, and poked one and ano- her with br cane, and oraerea tbem away In tbeso v.-ords: ''Begone, you louy pacx!" And that is all there is of it. ItwaaAnm Dickinson, if I mistake not. who heird of Bubira Frietchie, and ti;st told tho poet Wbittier of her, and under the inspiration of the moment, he wrote the poem cf " Birbara Frietchie." I suppose the source, whatever it was. Iroin which Miss Dickinson obtained her information, is responsible for tLe incorrectness of the Whittier version. It is so eay to gtt a story wrong, and so hard to get itriht, In this world. Good Dame Frietchie wa overjoyed when st length the union forces obtained possession of Frederick, and was loud in her demonstrations of pleasure. She may havo waved her union flag from an up-stairs window then; I don't know. She lived to see the cause she loved victorious, and died in poace, some time after the war, old and full of years. She is buried in tbe graveyard near her home. AFFLICTED.
