HOME AND FARM.
A traveled correspondent tells the Mirror nd Farmer that those New Engländers who Drotest most loudly tha. firming don't pay, lit those who grow bushes on their Liest lands. The editor of the London Garden informs the Tribune that American apples of this year g.-owth are now selling at moderate rates in provincial towns, both in England anflreland. Keep it on all i right and in the morning the tyo vill most likely be gonUnot, a second application is certain to remove it. STOCK ASD DAIRTISO. A good writer in a communication to the South Bünd Register says, among ether things : Call figuring on paper That you will, the avails or proceeds from stock exceed by far in value any line of industry or production in the United States. It amounts to more in dollars than all the cereals do in bushels. The products of milk can be used in tbe family direct from the manufactory; no middle man comiog in to claim a profit. There is no article ol food more indispensable fir,ih 5r or more of a luxury for .the rich. It IS male out of grass growing spontaneously on the land; it can be made and used direct from tbe raw material in a day; there is no waiting until alter harvest or for the threshing machme. Thereia no overstocking tbe market, tbe demand has been steadily on the increase "J increase more rapidly as Miat 'SJ2; iz3 to manufacture butter and cheese, their facilities being better than f"ners "T; rr making the article good. With the prosu.tir.Amtnriibrnad and our increasing demand at home, the probability Is we wia . a i -I, r'nrin?' thft ÜPII the next HdP. thcuch we may double the supply. Tint nvPr h I of k iiiH til a a n.crv v - r Geese on Geese la the same number of Moore's Rural New Yorker, April 3, two correspondents writ about geese. Both are very wise, especially in the matter ct goose food, but on that subject they differ slightly, and one statement or the other must be taken cum grano ealis. Tbe first one says "they require a little salt in their lood, plenty of grass and water." Tbe nexteajS : Boiled uiaahed potatoes and other soft food is good tor them provided it contains no salt. Now, how is Ibis question , to be decided. Probably it will be welltoask the old goose. Sns ought to know what is good lor her. Acain the letter writer, it. m. Ludlow, tatea:When the goose has laid five or sixe-gs tbey should be taicen at once and placed under a hen to hatch, it will not do to wait for more egg, as the first laid will become stale. How in the world do the wild geese g-t along without the aid of hens to hatch tbeir epps for them? The above Illustrates tbe foolish stuff which 13 Often written on these subjects. It is well to be caretul with the geese egg", to keep them in a moderate temperature laid on woolen rags and to turn them over every day. But that hens must be emploved to sit on every five or six eggs is eimply absurd. Tbe old goose win hatrh a dozen twiiinffs and take care ol them far better than a ben. Give the young goslings corn meal dough, a sod of green clover and grass ar.d keep tbem from exposure and they will be sure to bccoiue the worst nuisances about the larm or the public streets and commons. Tobacco Culture. The Farmers' Home Journal gives a detailed and practical description of th9 best methods, which may be of use to tobacco growers in Indiana: The first thing for tobacco growers to do is to procure the best varieties of seed. The large Yellow Prior is cultivated more extensively than any other variety in the section of the state known as Jackson's Purchase. It is also extensively cultivated in the. Green River eountrv. This is a tobacco nf finA tflxtnr and well SdSttSd tO the nandv soil ot these set tions. The Biz Vick and Missouri Broad-leaf and other larce heavy varietios are pre ferred in rich soils and manured laads. Tbe beEt tobacco-growers in Muhlenburg prefer the Governor Jones, a Tennessee variety, larger than the Prior, and requiring ten (liys longer to mature. Tbe Governor Jones has a shoit stalk, broad leaf, and cutes a dark red. Tbe Daniel Jones, also a Tennessee variety, is entirely distiuct from the Governor Jenes. It has a long stalk, with Ions, narrow, thick leaf, and oa rich or highly manured land, makes a very neavy tobacco, and a prctitable one to grow Seed may be sown any time after Christmas until the 15th of April. Indeed, I have known beds sown the 25th of April, and the plants were ready for transplanting the 15th of June. But these are not as good as early tnnn nlant. which are hardier, with better roots, and much creJerred. You will sei dom lose a bed bv sowing too early, if tbe ground is dry enough. Seed-Bed and Sowisa. It is best to hay J vour plant bed in the woods. Salict dry land nearly level. If the inclination is to the south, vour plants will come up earlier, but will be'in greater danger of injury from lata frofct. The bed should be about 20 feet widA. and as lontr as desired, or may be con venient. Clear the ground and rake off all leaves and trash. Then cover four to six leet deep with brush; and on that, timbers as large as you can conveniently handle, until the brush is well covered and pressed down: then stars vour fire, if the prospect is favorable for one or two days fair weather; if not, wait for a tcood time. After burning, rake tbe bad well with a heavy iron-tooth rake. Somediz about two inches deep and thn rake. If tbe soli is deep and well burned, digging is best, but on thin land raking id 6ulüdent. Mix the Feed well with dry ashes, allowing one tablespoonfal cf seed tj 20 feet qure; how a3 even as possible. Th'.s is bbst done by marking oirthe bed in rows about 13 inches apart, and taking only a few seed at a time between tbe thumb and finger". Tramp or roll tbe bed evenly : then brush well. This done by driving a row of lorks, 18 inches to 2 feet in heisbt. through the middle, in which you will place a pole, and lot the top ol the brush rest on tho pole, and the other end on the edge of the bed. If the greuna is much inclined, your bed should be pro tected from runniDg water by ditching on the upper end and sides. Brushing is a protection against heavv b9ating rains and late frosts, and aleo some protec tion from the ravages of the fly; benca beds do bent in tbe woods. After your plants are well ud. if too thick, thin by' raking. This mav seem like rough treatment, but it is al the better for tbe plants. A bed 20 fett square will aflbrd plants enough for five . acres. If the Qy attacks vour bed, dust with ben manure; this is much better than any patent "fertilizer" to make your plants grow. The bruh need rot bo removed until the plants are nearly Urge eraoi gh to transplant, it the season is very dry water the beds. " Just as love In the heart, and not Ja magnificent residence, father, mother, brothers and sisters, makes home, so the same love makes heaven. Who has It must have heaven, and who has it not must oi necessity lose heaven. It is just this self that makes or mars happiness forever.
