POWER OP POWDER. THE CLEVELAND EXPLOSION. AUSTIN POWDER MILLS KLBVATKD FIFTY TOKS OF POWDER IN OSB CHARQ K THREE MEN KILLED AND EVER SO MANY SCARED TO DEATH. 4 The Cleveland Leader gives fall particulars of the terrific awakening of that town by the powder disaster: The city on yesterday passed through an experience the like of which she has never "before known, and which for a faw moments filled the minds of all with consternation and dread. It was the instantaneous and utter destruction of the Austin powder works, which were blown to pieces without a moment's warning, and in which three men In the twinkling of an eve were hurled to a terrible and violent death. At exactly 1 o'clock in tbe afternoon a sudden and heavy shock was heard, and hardly hai it ceasei before it was followed by threo or lour others, which came so near together that they might almost have been counted as one. The first thouebt cl some people was that the giant powder brought here to bo usd in clearing; the river of ice tad escaped control, but a plance to the southward over University Height showed a dense column ct white emoke rising from the district where the Austia Powder Werks are located. Another but less violent explosion loll J wed some minutes after tbe first outs, so that i5 was thought the deduction of the company's works must be complete. The shock lelt in ths city was trriüc. Heavy brick buildings swayed and grated as though heaved by an earthquake. The plate glass windows of the new City Building, the superb front of Ryder's art gallery, E. 1. Baldwin & Co.s show windows, those of Kiee & Burnett and, doubtless, many others are shivered to atoms. On Garden street, from Brownell out to the stables, Eanes of glass were bioken in every few ouses. Tue residents, as in other places, took to the stieets at the first sound, all appearing with frightened countenances and catting their airsfc glances back at their houses, which they expected to see totter to the ground. One woman near the corner of Forest street fell on her knees in tbe middle of tbe street .and began to pray, while several little ones raised their voices in sobs. When attention was directed to the volume of smoke rising from the southern part of the city and people began to realize the cause of their alarm, their fears materially subsided, and all began to look about to discover the iamag3 caused in the neighborhood. A large number of panes ot giass were shattered into fragments, The lirst report of the explosion had the effect to empty nearly every building of its occupants, and in mauy places where large panes of glass fell in with a crash there was great alarm. Further over towards the southern part of tbe city tbe shock was more Intense, and the alarm and damage much more extensive. The SHOCK CAME IN WAVES with the wind striking that portion of the city with its greatest force. The people were wild with fear. In every other house windows and sashes were broken and in some cases sashes composed of four panes were shaken from their position? and tbrowD down upon the sidewalk. The only windows let, unbroken were tboe consisting of small panes of glass. Tfcrouhout the city the damage was very large, and it will require some days before it can bo easily estimated. A steady stream of excited people set in immediately toward the place wh3re the work of ruin had ueen wrcuaht. The streets were crowded and the tow-pth of tbe canal soon assumed the appearance of a crowded street. The wildest excitement prevailed, and excited rumor passed lrom tongue to tongue the strangest and most Improbable theories of tbe cause and consequences . of tbe explosion. Ones upon the spot tho eye caught eight of a scene of destruction and ruin that can not be describe J, and that could hardly be. realized when seen. The works covered a surface of some fifty or a hundred acres that lay in a hollow on the bank of the canal, and between tbe high hills on each side of the river. Scattered in all directions were the ruins of some fifteen or twenty buildings, and the indescribable wreck and rubbish that are produced only by some violent explosion or sudden upheaval. In many places cs tbe ruins were en fire and the heavy clouds of smoke that lilted and fell in the steady breeze that was blowing served only to add to the confusion and horror ot the scene. To attempt to give an exact description ot the order in which the eiplosiocs occurred is impossible, but it is the judgment of those who are best able to tell that the first explosion was in the rille corning mill, which is situated in a hollow on the sidehill. This was followed almost instantaneously by tho blowing up of the rille press, which was situated a few yards away. Tbe rille glaze mill followed, and the cinders from the exploded mass fell upon the packing house, sending it into the air. It was fallowed by the glazing .and blast corning mills, and the last explosion, which was heard a few moments alter the fir3t series, was caused by the blowing up of the hydraulic preis. This building was situated some rods away from the others, and did not blow up until afier the burning brands from some of the other buildiogs tell upon the roof and eat through to the powder beneath. This building, in which was kept tbe general stores of the employes, and several other buildings in whicu were no explosive substances, caught ra from the falling trends, and in twenty minutes alter the lirst shock was fait, the devouring names were finishing tbe work of ruin that the powder demon had commenced. HOW THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED is h mystety and always will re mil a so, although it U easy to guess that soma slight disarrangement of machinery, or one of thoe unforeseen accident that no human foresight could prrTTnt, brought on the sudden and dread catastrophe and scattered ruin, where before there had been only active Industry and business profpsrty. At the time the accident occurred only three or four of the mills were running, and tbe loss of life was much less than it otherwise might have been. Some eight or tea men were about the works, and it seems almost a miracle that so large a number of them escape. 1. The three who were killed were in the two mills that exploded first. One of them, David Limson, was alone in the rills eorninz mill, while the oCr.er two, August IUdelill'e and Frederick Putnam, were in the rille press, The three were literally blown to pieces and the fragments of their bodies scattered over tte place lor r jds about, Ooe body wa thrown nearly forty rods, passing over a couple of builJings and falling upon the ica in the cacal.fiom whence It glanced tr the opposite hank and partially imbedded in the soil. It was entirely unrecognizable, and was a ghastlv, horrible spectacle that bore no semblauce to a hemm form. The limbs and hands were gone, and with ether portions were found rods away. One limb was found over three rods from where the bedy fell, and still farther down tte csnal lay a blackened and crisp band. This body was the only one that bore any Emblaace whatever to the human form, and the remains of the other two victims wer scattered in fragments all -over the place. It waa a horrible and sicken-
iog spectacle to see those blackened and charred pieces, that had a few moments betöre been tbe portions of living and breathing men, gathered up here and there from among the ruins and embers, by tCe friends who had known and labored with the victims to so terrible a fate. Several tbril'.lDg escapes from danger were related. One of tbe men, William Goas, was in one of tbe buildings that did not explode with the lirst shock, and when be beard tbe explosion of tbe others be leaped over a car load of powder that was before him, and into a water tank, where bo remained until after the danger was past. Tbe company clerk, Mr. Brooks, was in tbe oflice, and rushed out in time to save himself. A narrow escape was also related by Mr. Ralph Shurtliff, who is a carpenter, and has been in the employ of the company for years past. He' was on the roof a new building that was being put up
some of two hurdred feet from one of the; buildings that exploded. He felt the shock and before be could make any attempt to save himself the whole building sank beneath him, being throws to the ground by the condition, lie attempted to extricate himself from tho ruins, and while doing so was struck in ttie back of the head by a pioce ot llsirg timber which knocked him almost senseless. At the samo moment another piec (-truck him in the bark and Inflicted a severe braise. 119 received no other injur ies. TUTE DAM AG K DONE. The amount of damage done can not be estimated, although it is the estimato of one of the company tha. it will be in the region of from forty to fifty thousand dollars. The loss in machinery, material and stores, is not well attainable until after ascertaining bow much can bo made of use, and what percentage of tbe whole lot cau be used in the future. There was an unusual amount of powder on hand, although the mills we-re not running to their full capacity. Considerable of this was in the brick magazines which were some distance from the rest of the works and were not injured. A rough estimate places tbe amount actually in tbe mills at tbe time ot the explosion at forty or fifty tons, while some fifteen or twenty buildings were entirely destroyed. Among these were four wheel mills, two coining mills, onegiazs mill, the packiug house, work-shop, drybouse, two press houses, oflice and several other buldlngs that were entirely destroyed, while some three or four others of lesser value were badly shattered. The buildings were not valuable as a rule, although some were of brick, and tbe loss to them will not be so heavy as might be supposed. With 50 tons ot powder scattered among these buildings and exploded in one shock, tbe amount of destruction accomplished can be estimated by those who are in any degree acquainted with the terrible power of the destructive agent. In every quarter that one would look could be seen some striking evidence of the malign power, and the crowds who wandered aimlessly over the grounds were constantly struck with some new evidence that caused their wonder and astonishment. On one hand was the large brick building inj which was !03t?d tie steam pow-e-tnl from wience loag iron cranks kept the wheel mills in operation. Although no fire or flying ruins had struck it, it was yet shaken to a wreck, and its heavy brick walls broken and seamed in all quarters. The roof was crushed in, and the ponderous engine was broken and bent in a hundred pieces. Strange as it may appear, however, tbe tall chimney stack was unhurt, with the exception ol a few piecesof brick that were shaken from the top. The hydraulic press mill was another scene of ruin. The roof was burned away from over the engine, and this ponderous piece of mechanism was lilted bodily and blown some forty or fifty feet from its original resting place. In the center of tho grounds used by the powder company was tho packing mill, and here perhaps wai exhibited the FORCE OF THE EXPLOSION in Its most dire form. Not one vestige of the buildine remained, and the ground beneath it was torn p to the depth of some ten or fifteen feet. Great pieces of frozsn earth and chunks of ice weighing in some cases scores of pounds, were thrown hundreds of feet away. The surface of tbe earth was ploughed and seamed as if torn up by artillery. Heavy pieces of machinery, great fly wheels and broken beams lay scattered about in endless confusion. In anotner part of tbe field where a glazing mill had stood, a hole ten feet deep and already tilled with water marked tbe power of the explosion. Not a stick or stone of the building remained. Hat it was in the surrounding dwelling houses that the feaiful shock could be mott readily seen. On tbe hill and along the highway to the south of tbe works were situa ed half a dozen buildings in which dwelt the families of men employed in the powder mills, or farmers. Iu none of tbese houses was there left an entirely unbroken window, and in some of them whole sashes were broken in. A boarding house on the summit of tho hill and where it wal exposed to tbe full force of the shock boreal! the evidences ct having been through an earthquake. The windows were broken, the chimneys shaken down, and the plastering fallen from the walls and ceilings. In all of the houses within tbe region of a half a mile about the plastering was more or less injured. It was a scene ol desolation that stared one in the face along the front oftbat road so beautitul in summer time. The picture was in no way relet ved by a glimpse of tbe white faces ot women and children that peered from the open doors and dismantled windows. The explosion occurred about 1 o'clock, as has been said above, and in less than two hours most of the buildings were entirely burned down and only great heaps of smouldering embers and ashes marked their site. The wheel mills were some ol them saved from entire destruction, although their coverings were all gone and nothing but their black frame s loomed up overhead. A couple of storehouses wero also saved from tiro, although the roof of one was gone and tbe other -was badly broken in on one side. The flames worked unchecked where they once got possession, and a brisk northwesterly wind tanned them to greater force. Two or three Umes during the afternoon sharp snow storm blew up, but they were of only short duration and seemed to have no elicit upon the fire. But tbe severe storm that fell toward evening had a good effect and assisted materially toward extinguishing ths piles of glowiog erabers.andallaymg much anxiety that might have been fait. The chief cause of alarm was the fear that some sprk might be carried to the magazines and cause tbem to blow up. Watch was kept all the afternoon to prevent people from going too near these buildings, but in many casts no attention was paid to these warnings, and men and boys went all about tbem. At one time some of them became so bold that they pried open the door ot one of tbesa buildings, and even ventured inside. Theso bui. dings remained safe, although they both had Darrow escapes. One was dampged in tbe root, and the other had a portion of the corner knocked ofl. The people continued to como from both city and country, and in less than an hour and a half alter the explosion AT LEAST TWO THOUSAND wondering and excited spectators W9re tramping over the grounds and splashing about in the mud. The hill-sides toward New burg and Brighton were swarmed with tbern, ar.d hundreds crowded about tbe place where tbe mangled remains of tho poor victims were covered and laid away. The roads were filled with vehlclesj of all
characters and sizes, and even tbe blinding snow storm that fell toward evening saw hundreds wending their way to the place. Tbe wheeling beyond tbe paved. street was execrable, and tbe footpaths were do better, but neither mud nor the promise of storm bad check on the all present desire to sse and hear, each one lor himself. It is a remarkable coincidence that the former great explosion in these powder mills occurred on the 16th day of March, 1S72. exactly three years ago yesterday. Oa that occasion four mills were blown up, and two men killed, and the wildest excitement prevailed throughout the city, Tbe scenes of J'esterday were then enacted, except in a esser degree. The IGtb of March will perhaps be a day to be remembered by the company. In a recent antiquarian lecture in London among the curiosities used as illustrations was the or.ri xal of the bill sent by tbe
queen's jeweier to Her Majesty Queen Eli zabeth lor jewelry, and at tho foot the order fir payment sighed by the lord treasurer. There Vera also various interesting autographs, amongst others that of Mistrees KlienGwyn the name In lull written by some one else, but between tbe christian and surnames the initials " K.
