GENEIk.VL MARKET REVIEW. THE LOCAL MONET MARKET There is but little to note that 13 new or of special interest. The amount of loana ble funds on the market is ample for every requirement, whether on lorir, or t-hort time, on commercial pa;xr or real estate, New York exchange is steady and firm, Merchants are in so sound a condition cen erally, and po well supplied Irom their own collections that they are asking but com paratively little accommodations at the banks. ESTIMATE OF BUTTER CONSUMPTION. At the recent butter and egg convention held at Chicago, the committee on statistics presented the following estimates, which are both novel and instructive: As matters of special interest to the mem b?rs of this association interested in the profincaon or sale or uuuer, i beg leave to sub mit to you pome items of statistical infor mation bearing upon these products, which were recently compiled and put forth by the lintter and Cheese .Lxchangs ot New lork The production of butter in the United States is difficult to estimate. The lncomniete fizures furnished bv the census renort aCord but a faint idea of the magnitude of this production, ana we nave, therefore, nothing but estimates to guide us. The fol lowing estimates were prepared bv a mer chant cf long experience in the butter trade, and is one that close observation has veritied. and is entitled to confidence. This estimate ia made upon the basis, that of our population: Five million consume one pound each per waek. Ten million consume three-quarters of a round eacn per week. Ten million consume one-half pound each P9r week. Ten million consume one-quarler pound eacn per week. At thi3 rate 35,000,000 people would con eume 1.040,000,000 pounds per annum for table use alone, and it is estimated that one third more may be added for culinary pur poses, making a total home consumption of about 1,M7,000,000, or, Bay, two-thirds of a pound weekly for every one ol our popula tioa. The exports from Canada and the United States (we include Canada for the reason that butter exported direct from that couolry is the same in i:s influences upon our riarkoU as thouj;h it came here this ticg its natural outlet, the exports of American butter, therefore, are about 15,000,6.00 pounds, makina: an annual protlad acradited to tne united states ot 1.402,C0CX)0, which, at an average value of 20 cents j er pound ana mat is not a high average ,rice for the last few years realizes f42Q00,000. 1 1 is stated by a gentleman of acknowledged authority in dairy natters, toat tun product consumes the mnk uf over .54 r-rceut. or the milch cows in the United kSU?-ea, which is estimated to be 13 000 000. The weather has again been the disturbing ele ment in business calculations, and the week baa been characterized by a dullness In trade circles not anticipated a weelt ago. We are again more favored than our nelchbors as regards the weather, since tha snow fall, west, north and east of us, has been much heavier than here, with the effect to Impede business generally. Taking the trade of tho week as referring to tne street markets, ana n is sue to sy iubi tue ux K'eeate of transactions is' some larzer than for . . 1 . tn.il i .. Iii wees prewuiuif. n uno uicio m confidence that the HKrlns Is to be. an unusually busy and proa table one to merchants, there is as yet no proper realization that the good time has come. ON 'CHANGE, At the Hoard of Trade the tracing la grain has been In a comparatively small way. The prln clpal Interest centers in corn, for which the prices have been firmly maintained, and even advanced to the extent of Ji cent per bushel. Buyers insist that they can not afford to pay so much and yet they continue to receive orders and to iv the prices demanded by the holders There have been but few transactions in wheat or oats, lor which prices have be.en flrta with a leudency to advance on Wednesday and Thursday. Tue trade in Beeds Las been principally in a retail way, and quota-ions tor rouni lots are lower. Flour is in limited request and millers are indifferent as to running, only two or three runniogon full time. The provision market has developed no special feature so far as spot meats aie concerned. There have been an abundance of ordtrs on the market every day, audstutf has been found to fill a fare share of them. Options in both pork and lard are Vi to 'M cents' lower than at the opening on Monday, and tbedecliue appears to be pretty well established. t ON THE STB E CT. The grocery trade has been very quiet during the entire we?k. Coffee has Leeu quoted dull throughout and a further concession of yjc per lb. on Rio is quoted in the Eastern markets. It is believed to be ou a substantial footing now and lndepeudeutof any Influence save that of supply und de:nand. hilars have boea quoted firm ; an aavance was nottd of la early in the week. Tobaccos liave been dealt in moderately, and generally at the advacce of 4 cents per pound, although a .ew dealers chose to give their customers the benefit of the advance to the close of the week. Coal oil Is very firm and an a ivaoce of lo noted. The diug market has been very steady, with no occasion to change a quotation save as to alcohol, as made necessary by he action of congress. ihe tradein dry coods for the past week has shown but little activity. The Increased severity ol the weather tgether with the danger and uncertainty or raiiroau travel nave oeej me principal impediments in the way ol traffic. The number of country dealers cn the market was less than the week previous; their purchases, however, asxuTied t"e apiearance of spring bills. They no doubt feel that the time is near at hand when the wily granger who has devoted the winter to the reading of bills that failed to pass, and others which had better been killed in their infancy turns, with disgust from the political arena and gives attention to the duties of the coming spring time: when he hopes once more to take care of his own affairs and buy and sell as hlsown judgment dictates. Jobbersare now prepared lo serve their country friends with all the novelties of the season. Prints are opening In beantlfnl designs, mostly light grounds, with and without bauds. Among the leading maces Arnolds's, Merrimack's L'ocheco'd Pacific's and Ptabody's, are deserving of especial notice. Dress go?ds are selling freely mostly plain alpacas in brown and drab shades. Oingharas are in good demand with prices firm. The passing of tne new i a ritt' bill will have a tendency to stiffen prices of all classes of merchandise, and will enable manufacturers to maintain with llttlo dilliculty the present advance. The tradein salt fish is steadily improving, quotation remaining steady and unchanged. Prod ace has been In a quiescent state during the wfk, except as to eggs, the Bupply of which was te. porarily shortened by the severe cold. On Saturday the receipts were very large, and to-day a decline of two cents is noted, liutter und poultry are in fair supp;y, with an equivalent demand. A pleasant, almost sprlng-llko morning contributed unmistakably to a better feeling amoDg the mercbants, both on the street and on'Chanje, In all the houses there was a liberal sprinkling of customers unusually so for Monday. In all the street markets there ia perfect steadiness as to quotations, there belDg nothing whatever to note as new to-day. At the Board of Trade tiiere was considerable activity In the corn market, with liberal sales at previous prices. There was nothing reported in wheat or oats. The Hour trade Is dull and only two or three mills are running on full time. Heeds are moving freely at all the stores In a retail way. The dealing in provision Is not completed, nor hardly developed before the close of 'Change, so that we may speak advisedly In the general review for the day. It is considered, however. In lts;ap proprlate place below, and the sales reported to the close of the day. i o notations are given for the buying prices ol rrain and produce, and the selling prices for HOOT ana ower uiercuiuiuuM3.i DAILY RAILROAD COMMERCE.
