The Veedersburg Review says in regard to the fatal fire in that placo 0:1 last Saturday night: The supoitioa Is that the fire originated by wood taking fire from being too close to the cook stovf ; others think it originated from a lamp; but the former U the probable caue. Nothing was saved from the shop but an account book that laid on the dftik near the window. A subscription paper wai circulnted next dav, and the people promptly volunteered liberally to the aVutance ot the afflicted sufferers. GRANT COCN1T. The legislative correspondent of the Anderson Democrat dealt out tho truth very parsimon'ously when he wrote that "Senator Friedley unbosomed himself, In the Senate, in regard to certain charges preferred tgaint him by the Indianapolis Sentinel." The Sennel bad nothing to do with the senator5- having bared his manly boeom. But perhaps this is a typographical error. That noble senator arose to a question of privilege concerning certain charges preferred by the Cincinnati Enquirer's correspondent.then stationed a: this place. NOBLE COUNTY. The Ligonier Banner says that a diabolical act of incendiarism wa3 perpetrated at Indian Villag?, this county, early last Sunday morning. The steam saw mill of L. B.

Luckily, the engine was not damaged to such an extent a 10 render it valueless for future eerviee, nor did tte flames spread sufficiently todevourlho large Pll-3 Of 10fc8 thit had accumulated during the winter. The 'act that there hid been no firing at the lriil for bomo tinie renders it certain that some soulless miscreant reiortd to this devilish plan to avenge hiunell for an imaginary grievance One can hardly conjecture how thin could come to pass, as thera areföw men in the county who have a maller nunibor of nemies and a greater circle of friends than Leander B. The Evansville Courier of the 24th instant sajs: Night before last a number of dogs entered the sheep pasture of Pleasant O. Gentry, on Fulton avenue, near Dr. Walker's residence, and played great destruction among the lambs of be field. From the appearance of the animals it seems as if the dos grabbed at the sheep's mouth, and after securing It fast would gnaw its throat and suck the blood. In this way twentytwo sheep were lost, eight baviog been lound dead and the otbers dying. Singular to relate the vicious dogs bad not touched a mor-' sei of the mutton, devouring only the lita's! blocd of trie Fheep. Yesttiday afternoon Township Trustee Blend visited the pasture, and filed papers in toe county auditor's ; flaw, preparatory to reimbursing Mr. Gentry for his loss out of the fund provided by law for that purpose. The Brooklyn correspondent of the Chicago Tribune telli the following relitivo to an uncalled witness ia the case: Some information, which I have long been in possessi ju of but which I have hitherto suppressed, has now become of transcendent importance in this trial. It throws much lieht upon Bowen's card published to-day. Some years ago, Bo wen told this story: One day hi had left Lis home to go to New York, and had just reached the lerry when trie sudden increrseofa malady from which he was suffering made it necessary for him to return to his bed. He bad not teen in his room very long before he heard some one arrive at'his house, ring the bell, and enter. On9 ol the members ol hi.s household was a very pretty younir girl, to wfcom he was sincerely attached. Sbo went down to the prlDrto entertain the visitor, and remained there tor some time. All of a sudden she uttered a puccession ot piercing thrieks. B wen was alarmed bis consternation beinj increased by the snundd of a ptruggle. Descending to the room as quickly as be could, be found hi protege almost in tte violent embrace of Mr. Beecher. A lifetime vanished with the silent flash of a set-ond, fnd then, alter tho first paralyzing shock of surprise, the pastor groveled at the feet of nia parishioner, and "humbled himself before him as he did before his God." This is Bowen's own solemn description of a sc?ne bich Beecber afterwards confused if Moulton is not a perjurer to Moulton. It is only one of the awful disclosures which, whether it be true or false, escaped from Bowen's keeping before Tilton loomed up RS an accuser of Henry Ward Beecher. II the present charges of Tilton are tra?, thoy are but wasted fires which live in his adver sary'a abes Tuose licentious flames Bowon was well able to contemplate in tbe voung man Beecher, who, twenty-five or thirty years ago was an inmato ot his house, and afterwards THE OBJECT OF HIS BOUNTY. So poor was Bsecher in the early days of Plymouth that be chopped his own wood, and once shoveled snow for the trivial compensation which rewarded suih labors in the golden aje of the republic. This was just after Beecher had baon summoned from Cincinnati to build up the church end creed in which Bowen sunk all bis first earnings. To the Bscchers. Bowen bas always stood in a masterly relation. Their fitful economy depended upon him to fill up tbe chinks. Tbftiri larder bad an underground connection;vith Uoweu'a kitchen; an J in Bowen's grim keeping, as in an iron safe, all their scandals and secrets were lodged. It seems to have been a Micawberleh household, after all, that B"f eher menage, with the diflerence that this actual wife's adhesion to her spouse was selfish, bigoted, and tyrannical. lie was, in those days.a rarely-gilied young man something visionary, something too sanguinealways bubbling over with animality bigVfined, over-blooded, reckless, and as daredevil as a preacher rright b. She was, alter her marriage, what she was before it a narrow minded woman, of violent temper and bitter speech, incapable of measuring all her husband's dimension?, and yet tor all that, msy lie, tbe most competent Judge of his qualities. She is still the sort ot woman who drives her husband lke a tethered beast, grooming him with a rancorous jealousy but CAUSELESSLY 8TINOINO HIM into outbursts ef rebellion. Another wife might have saved Beecher from the cloud which impends over .the closing of his care, r. She only intensifies its gloom. .Vrs. B(echer's dreadful temper bnrely escaped being embalmed in the amber of ecclesiütical history. Poor Lyman Brecher, alter his bard orthodoxicnl warlare, died under another roof than his t-ivoriio son's. The venerable sire of them all had experiences ot Ids dauebter-in-law like oniy to those which Capt. C-Jltie cberi-htd of Mrs. McStinger. There w9no page in his bercie biographies In which might hstold th di ml scene of such domestic convulsions. A very Epes us was tbat perso? age on the Height, and truly in tonesof anguish might the banished divine cry with Paul bis "(the-rio-machesx!" Here ataiu Bowen stalked f.Hturninely to tbe rtscue. It was ou a bed iToffered by ensot Bowen's relatives that Lyman Boecberdied. Somebody has been at the trouble of calculating the average number of hairs which prow on an average person's heal. It is found that the number varies according to the color of the hair. LTgbt or blande hair is the moil luxuriant, the aversge ot this color being 140,000. Wben the hair is trown tbe number 1 much les, being only 110 000, while blick hairs only reach the average amount of 103,000. It might naturally be supposed that a light haired persou, having the most bair, would have tbe preatetd weight to carry, but it is not so. Tbat which is bebtest in color is sIro liebtest in weight; and a lady with abundant flaxen locks is as liht-Leaded as one whose tresses are of a raven hue. Hence it follows tha, the former is of a fiuer texture. The bxk soon to be issued by C. B. Lewis the wit of the Detroit Free Press, will con tain over five huodred pages, and be profusely illustrated. Tbat it is likely to be a successful worst lies not alone in 'the fact tbat the author stands at the head of journalistic wits, but in the laot tbat be la equally successful in other fields of liters ture. There will be enough variety to mike the work more than a mere source ot amuse ment.
ESCAPING COMMUNISTS.
THS KT ARTUNG ADVENTURES OF TWO FRENCH COMMUNISTS JCSCAP1NO PROM NEW CALEDONIA. The New York Herald of a late date gives the following from onoof Its correspondents at Sydney: New Caledonia, vndertho rule of M. Alleyron, is much more Jifllcult place to escape from than it was a year ago, owing to tbe rigorous supervision exercised over all classes of the community. The news that two deportes had reached Qaeenland in a small boat waa received with incredulity, no well had the secret of their escape been kept by the authorities, and few bell 've that the boat was their sole mode of conveyance. Great discontent prevaMs among the prisoners. Their enforced idleness, their want of means to procure anything save what is served out by the government and the new regulations bv which any finances eent them from France are filtered through the hands of their keepers will certainly causo some rash outbreak unless some alteration takes place. Tbe two communists who reached Queensland in an open boat on December 22, have been extremely reticent as to their real namep. One has evidently been a Derson of some position in France, and tells the following story of how they eecajei. Tbe narrator says: From the time of mv arrival at Sew Cakdonia I constantly brooded over tbe idea of escaping. The thought waa never absent from my mind and althouah time pass?d away without any opportunity occurring, I continually kept making preparations to avpjl myself of the first chance tbat offered. From mv scanty ntiors I reo-nlarixr nut .n. f j f. c i k auu concealed a portim, and I managfd to accumulate a quantity of flour bagging, out of which I managed inrinnthp nighis and my leisure timo when I could be secure from observation, to make a tolerable sail. I can hardly eay in what manner I hoped to find the means of crossirg the ocean fca at length tha arrival of one of tbe tradinsc vessels which supply the island with bullocKS appeared to afford as good a prospect of success as was likelv to occur. My preparations bad escaped all attention, and all that remained to be done was to evade the guards, procure a boat and make a dash for it. From the place where I was quartered the ship a: anchor, a short distance eff the shore, cculd be plRiulv een, and I observed with delight that a boat was floating astern of her. Ucablo to endure THE DAILY INSULTS and menances of the warden, I said to myself, therefore, this night I shall escape or I shall drown mysslf; one or the other I am determined on. I have but tbe two things to cbooso between. Feeling tbat in an r.rdertaking of this sort o man would be helpless single-handed, I sddre?ed myself to ose of my lellow prisoners, whom I knew m lo uucreei, ana 10 nun 1 connaed mv rfolution. The darkness, which favored us in one respect, nearly caused onr ruin in another way, for having no knowledge of the passage through the reefs, and uoc being able to see where dangers lay, we came plump In the midst of the coral.
