FINANCE AND BUSINESS. GENERAL MARKET REVIEW. THK LOCAL MONEY MARKET. There is still no change to note in 11 nan eial matters and no special activity in the demand lor money, nor in general business, anticipated . until after tha 1st of March. There is an abundant supply at all the banks, and a general disposition to accommodate ali responsible borrowers. New York exchange continues steady and lirm at previous rate3. The prospect for the future - - to ro-.v brighter eaca succeeding week. There H Jikely to b3 an unusual number of buildings erec.ed this season, and of such a character as to give employment to all of our mechanical and laboring population. Money to loan on mortgage was never bo abundant nor at bo cues p rates and favorable terms. This of it ec-ll will stimulate the improvement ol property, and the more so that there 1 so pr?öSirg demand ior more tenement houses. fJitlEW OF THE HOME MARKETS. Monday Evening, Feb. 22. There beleg no meeting of the Board ot Trade to-day and no dispatches from other markets, the following review for Saturday Is again presented. Stores on the street were generally open, but there vas but little business doing anywhere. The weather Is certainly more encouraging, ana the warm sunshine is melting Uie annw and Ice at a rapid rate: The closing day of the week; so far as trde was concerned, corresponds very closely with the preceding ones. The weather is moderating, and that excites borne cheerfulness, bnt on the whole it Is a very quiet aay on the street. On Chang there was an active demaud lor corn, which could not be supplied at prices acceptable to buyers. Holders were firm at an advance of a cent aboe yesterday, and not much could be obtained at that. Wheat was quiet and oats also. Seeds remain quiet and hay dull. Provisions were steady at quotations, with no business eicepl in options as reported below. WEEKLY REVIEW. The revere cold weather noted in the last review continued without abatement until Thursday, when there were the first signs of improvement. Friday and Saturday were moderate days, and where the sun's rays could strike fairly the ice was melted from the sidewalks and crossings pretty generally, renderinj pedestrian locomotion less dangerous than forseverai weeks pafct. Kanday morning there wai a fall of an in "ix or two of snow, but the tun appeared at mid-day aid it soon dlappearei, and some of the okl stock was dissolved also. In trade circles, taken as a whole, the we k has been a quiet one. There has been gome business, to be sure, but not to say any activity. Travellog men on the road have been doing remarkably well, however, in tne dry goo is line, aud moderately zn iu others. A lew days of pleasant weather In the country tJ set the people moving will nndonbtedly give a new aapest t0 the business situation. THK GRAIN MARKET lias keen ft quiet one. All the early part of the reek there was a downward tendency to prices, and the consuming market appeared to be -waiting for lower range. The first signs of reactloa in corn were perceptible on Thursday, were more clearly defined on Frij. gad on Saturday the market had bteome rv firm at an advance of one and one-half jr 0f transae loos has been rather limited, and vill not reach above Ocars for the entire wetk, ZCfr as reported. Wheat remains, so fur as this .r-ptls eoncerata, in statu quo. inen nas J"n considerable activity in the trade at i-Miro. and on isaturdy a very and advancing market was retart it ' probnble that the grain Kiti'ds ol farmers in this section will began to v. aaln so soon as the prospects of the cora- . VIZn hall become subject of estimate and ing "PP."" There is at present no shipping dePcuiaiiou vhI(.b ijoiuers will accept and inc, .fi- which reaches market barely Buoplles the lU'"-,. JIk, .Nearly ail that comes i bought theioeai i" ,ers and does not appear in directly ,'' "n 'Change. Oats have beeo dealt the bnSi imie aud price? are nominally In but a " he movement of all kind jygaffS route through here by ra'l has been
less by half than for either of the three weeks previously, and tne railway agents complain that business was never so dull In freights. Seeds have been nut little dealt in duricg the week, the market remaining Bteady at quotations, llav has been In abunuant supply and rather ditllcult to dispose of in round lots. PROVISIONS. This market ha been characterized by no special features, there being comparatively no trading in spot meats. In options there has been a moderate business, the fluctuations being Just about sufficient to pay the brokerage and a small margin for operators. The ag?regai business in this line will reach an average o JK),(XH per day at least. There has been no occasion to change the q Dotations for spot meats during the week, and they remain tne game as one week ago to-day. PRODUCE. In this line there is not much to note. The scarcity ol egsjs cantinued until the weather began to moderate, whea larger receipts weakened the market. Ou Sa'urday a decline
of 6 cents was reported. Poultry has been abundtnt during the week, and, except that some of It was too much frozen, has bee- of good oualttr : prices remain unchanged, imtter Is arilvinz lu larizrr Quantities than for some time previously. The quality is Inferior, and the color orJctlonably pale. A single house accumulated 10."UO poaud during the wee, and was compelled to ship, although the prospect for a profit was not flattering. Other articles remain id regn ar supply and aieady at quotations. GROCERIES. While some houses report a trade equal to the previous week the majority of them have not had so much to do as would please them. Coffee has remained steady in this market at the prices ruling on Monday. Tride has been doll In the East, with but little In the outlook to encourage holders. Dealers have al lowed their stock to run low, and have bought only as present necessities have compelled. Sugars have been iirm, and on Saturday were Ji cent advanced at the East. The fortunes of the revenue bill in congress have been watched with conlderable anxiety. At times the prospect for its passage as reported have bee a promising; at others amendments have appeared rertaia, and again It has appeared that It would not pass at nil. Its pasage.by the House on Saturday wa the stimulant which strengtbened the sugar market, and others which wereaflected by it as well. Coal oil has fluctuated romewhat during the weeii, fora time declining, but again advaucirg sharply, recovering the lull measure of the decline. DRY GOODS. The taste displaye J lu catering to the wants of the Western trade by our Meridian street merchants this season has bee a a matter of general comment among retailers viiitin? oar market, notwithstanding these well merited compliments they bear then honors meekly, and are looking forward to the time wnen their rewards will be of a more substantial nature. By their common petition they horw to tone down the temperature, so ato enable their customers to leave thefr "lireslfles" without being compelled to place their obituary in the forms of their county paper, in splteofthe continued seventy of the weather a lair amount of trade was done the post week, and J edging from the general a ppearanc? of stocks our Jobber have the "stud for a more than usual demand. The well filled package departmtnts are worthy of inspection; here we und caces containing cottona'.es, bleached muslin?, tlcitiDg, rolled Jaconets, etc., all in apple pie oider, while bales of sheetings, stripes aud ducks are built Into ricks of monstrous pro;ortion. In the presence of such evidence we bein to comprehend tne magnitnde and importance of this braneh of trade. Few changes have occurred in the past week: prices or few leading makes of bleaches show a slight advance: brown and bleached cot tons are In good demaud, while chevlolts, ticks, ducks and denims are showing some Mans of life. Cotton yarns are In good reouest with prices firm at the advance. Dress good few are selling outside plala alpacas, which are offered at extreme low prices. MISCELLANEOUS. Tobacco, whisky and other articles directly aflected by the revenue bill now under discus sion In congress, have been subject of specula tion during the week In the principal markets for their sale. Money, and considerable of it.has been both made and lost, the fluctuations be ing heavy and frequent. There has not, however, been very much activity in the trade nere so lar as can be learned, stocks nave been held pretty firmly, the confidence being general that the tax would finally be put on. The drug market has been quiet except as re gards alcohol, which Is under the same influ ence as whisky, etc, Hides have remained at unchanged quota tlons and business exceedingly dull. The Iron trade has been devoid o' specially new features for several weeks, the selling price of ail staple goods being unchanged. FREIGHTS. The great freight war which has been Inaugurated between the Pennsylvania Central and the Baltimore Jl Ohio Company has not as yet been compromised. Passenger fares la both directions have been cut down from 35 to 45 per cent., and freight rates from Baltimore and Philadelphia, to Western cities, have also been cut heavily, mere nas been no change In freigni rates to the Kast as yet, since the advance noted last week. TWO RIVAL OOXJCRERs IN LONDON TU El SLEIGHT OF HAND TRICKS. A London letter p peaks of two celebrated magicians la that cily: For some time rust we have been ainased in London by tbe presence and Ingenuity ol two rival conjurors, Dr. Lynn and Mr. Maskelme. They outdid one another In mxrvel?, and are found to orcupy rooms side by 6iJe at the Egyptian Hall, Picradilla. When one produced a box trick, tha other came out with a basket trick. When one exposed the Davenport ' Brother, the other ridiculed the pretentions of Miss Uva Fay. At last Dr. Lynn came out with a clever but ghastly trick of cutting a man's bead off. Hut Mr. Maskelyne, not to be beaten, has invented a uC w D.lcal coDtrivanco, called Psycho, which is a marvel among- automata, and already the Ulk ol all London. Psycho is a dummy figure resting on a square box or caae, literally filled with clock and elaborate machinery and this oaae, with the dummy figure or doll resting upon It, is placed on a ? " ssv5,ind1er in center of the tspe. It is absolutely impossible that a man can be concealed under the figure to work it. as was the case with the once celebrated automatic chess player. The box under Psycho is extremely small and complete filled, with machiuery of an elaborate kind. Hut at the command of Mr. Maskelyne, Psycho adds figures together, multiplies, sub(racn. and performs various astounding tricks In mental arithmetic. Ha is able also to teil what card 4 have been subti acted from the pacK by several people in the audience. Bat the most marvelous trick performed by Psycho consists ol his playing a hand at whist with three gentlemen selected from the audience. When the cards are dealt. Psycho's cards are arranged In Iront of him on a semi-circular frame. Tbe cards played are called out by Mr. Maskelyne, and when Isycho'a turn comas to play the figure looks wipe, turns bis head, puts out his hand and eelects the necessary card. He plays an excellent game, never revokes nor makes a mistake, and the ieat is awarded with the utmost unbounded applause. Mechanicians are wild about tbe dhr coverv, which rellects creat credit skill of the inventor. Paycho was first introduced down at Santlri nihm hxr errrrta order and command of 11. R. II. the Prince oi ales. wlii. bv tha hv from paying his first visit to Mr. IrviDg's Hamlet at the Lyceum last evening, owing to tbe sad and serious iilne3 of bis younjrer brother, the Prince Leopold. 1776.
