STATE SEATS. A JAMS COCSTT. The Portland Co.nmercl.'l of the llthinst. says that Mrs. Kelly, widow of Jonathan Kflly, residing in Adams county, about four miles northeast of New Corydon,- was made the victim of a terrible death by fire last Sabbath morning. Mrs. Kelly was residing aJone, and alter tbe accident ran several rods entirely naked excepting her stockings, and informed a neighbor the house was on fire. Sho then returned and went to bed, but became unconscious and was never able to give tbe particulars. There was not a particle of her person above the stockings which was not burned to a crisp. ALLEN COUNTT. Thomas Tigar, an old citizen of Fort Wayne, died on Tuesday, of apoplexy, lie was tbe founder of the first newspaper, the Sentinel, in Fort Wayne, was e?enty-two yars old. and op to the time ol hi3 sickness was active in buslmss pursuits. CLAV CONTT. The Terre Haute Express of the 17th inst. Toak9 thus of some tlsns of violence among tha Brazil miner-. Heretofore, there has been no threats of violence made by the sinking miners of the Clay county coal regions, but it seems at last it has to come. Same of themlneis have gone to work and the Miston, Keystone, Ni block-Zimmerman and Wataon Bhafta are working more or less. Exasperated, it seems, by this, the worst class of tbe miners seaa anxious to do omethlne that shall write the history ot
this strike in Diooo. uwv "f- , . at one of the Cardonia mines' received tnrough the postoffiee a letter ordering him to quit work or suffer the consequences. A few daya ago a miner at the 'Xiblock. Zimmerman & Alexander shaft on otter Creek, had his tools stolen, very much in the manner Charles Iteade describes the means formerly used in England to intimidate those who did not belong to the union?, and, when he went to work in the morning, found a notice fastened upon bis "room" or apartment In tbe mine, "We meen tmsines-, byGoddryou Had Better Stopp orkeor we'll rix you." It is not known whether the miner continued work after that. Another notice was also posted upon tho timbers at the Garlick shatt, ordering the men to quit work, under pain of being shot. This document was signed by the Molly Magulres, and stated that whoever persisted in workins would be shot down without mercy. CLARKE COCSTT. The Record says that a young colored man ' in the employ ot Mr. M. Lv Bottorff, near bat place, while preparing to shoot a sheep killing dog, on Wednesday last, accidentally discharged a revolver, the ball passing through his right hand and'so near the head of Mr?. Battorff as to stun her by tue concussion. It is supposed that the ball passed witb4n two inches of her head. CASS COCSTT. The Peru Republican says: On the 16th of January Eliab Hogue and Joseph Lee ongaged in an affray, in Litzenberger'a saloon at Xenia, in which Hogue shot Lea through the body with his'revolver. On preliminary trial he was admitted to bail by Justice Kleves. Afterwards his bondsmen surrendered him and he was lodged io the county Jail, in default of ?2,000 bail. On Tuesday, ' Hogue and his attorneys, Messrs. Mitchell and Walker, petitioned to have the bail reduced. By agreement tha bail was finally fixed at JLOOO, and the cause awaits the action of the grand lury. Lee is reported a? dangerously wounded. The mania for spelling matches is getting to be very contagious. At Logansport a real old iashioued spelling school will be held in tbe basement of the Second Presbyterian Church next Friday evening. An admission fee of 15 cents is to be charged and the affair will be in accordance with the old time custom of "choosing sides" and "epellingdown." A prize will be awarded to the best speller. HARRISON COCSTY. The Corvdon D?mocrat says that Prof. J. II. Madden and J. P. Fund have made ar rangements to hold a normal school next ai.mmaw in tha rrriir A1 nrhortl hntldinff in nuicu.. wMv tt Corvdon. Circulars announcing the time and giving run Darticuiars win it isaueu soon. JEFFERSON COUNTY. Midt of the schools in this county have been closed, owing to the prevalence of chickenpox. The Madison Courier says that & closa ob server and a gentlsman of large experience Informs U3 that his cherries are certainly killed. The peaches, he thlnis, may not hare been kl'led by the very crsIJ weather, whwh set in earlvand has Drevented tbe budi from dwelling, bo far. The escape of a prisoner during, trial is thus related by tha Madison Courier: Joe Willougbby w.is on trial the latter part of last week before the Circuit Court. The charge brought against hiai was arson; the peclfic act, burning the barn of a widow woman named Mary Silera, whose farm adJoins his orn, in Monroe township. Willonghby was on bond for $1,000, with Samuel Custer for security. Saturday afternoon, just before the jury retired to their room to make op their verdict, Willoughby walked out of the court house and was not to be found when tbe verdict returned. The fudge immediately issued a warrant for his arrest, which was placed In the hands of the sheriff. Mr. Graham then diepa'ched five men to search for WilloHghby. Between 9 and 10 o'clock James Mclntire arrested the fugitive as be was walking on the Michigan road, at a point between his farm and Bryantsburg. The jury brought in a verdict against him of six years imprisonment in the state prison. JACKSON OOCNTY. Dr. J. R. Monroe, of Seymour, has Just issued a drama entitled "Malachi and Ml randa." The Madison Courier fays of it: His delineation of character, though not elaborately touched, is bold and striking, and tbe more so from tbe fact that many of his figures are familiar in character to the newspaper readers of to-day. Aside from love, romance and spiritualiem, the auihor throws In the "curdlers" train-robberies, murders and mob-violence with telling . ffcct. KNOX COUNTY. The Terre Haute Express of the 19: h inst. says: Yesterday morning tbe deputy marshall of Vincennes attempted to arrest a negro in that city who has been guilty of some crime, and the negro making a .tout resistance, the officer drew bis revolver aud commanded him to delist. Quick as a flash tbe negro seized a poker and with it struck tbe arm which held the pistol, and as soon as tbe weapon fell to tbe xrou4 seized it and Bhot the officer so that his .eovery is doubttul. Search was made along the line of the different roads lead! ng out of the city for the man but he had lied. The man who did the fthCOtlDg is named Henry Cox. KOSCIUSKO COUNTY. Tbe Enterprise thus tpraks of ao improved method of fishing; at the lakes in that countj: It consists of a small house, built upon runncra like those of a tied, In which
is placed a small stove, and through tbe floor of which a email aperture is left through which to drop the liues. Holes are cut in tbe ice and the houses moved over them, and the fishermen sit by a warn stove while drawing in the Tub. Several of those houses are now on the lake. LAPORTK COUNTY. The following story is a good one, told by the heriff who accompanied the prisoner. The latter'a nama was Watson, and he was t serve two years. One night the suspense of tbe "ragged edge" became so unbearable, that he signified a desire to die. His fellowprisoners desiring to see every wish gratified, got a little flour of the prison cook which they made into pills. They were offered to Watson on condition that he would not tell who gave Lim the poisonous pills. He faithfully promised, and taking them with him to the solitude of bis cell, he laid his weary head upon the bard pillow and swallowed the fatal pill". He laid there for four mortal hours thinking over his past life and forgiving very one who had testified to his stealing that horse, and yearning for the poison to take effect. But somehow tbe swallows did not homeward fly. and finally, very much discouraged, he walked out of his cell, where tha smiling countenances ot a score ol his fellow prisoners apprized him that he was tbe victim of a cruel hoax. NOBLE COUNTY. The Kendallville Standard speaks thus of social parties in that vicinity: "Social eucher parties are becoming quite fashionable this winter. It is a very pleasant and social method Of passing an evening, and we
are pleased to see that the old fogy, silly notions and prejudice against this pleasant pastime is fast dying out. So also in regard to dancing, now much more genteel, civil and respectable it is to Join a pleasant dance than to romp, pull and haul, hug and kiss In the manner practiced by some church societies." By which we inler that tbey ba?e peculiar church sociables In tbat region. PIKE COUNTY. Otwell is a little settlement In Pike county, containing 200 Inhabitants. About a year ago, says the Petersburg Press, John McCarty started a saloon in Otwell, under a government license. Last summer it was accidentally or providentially destroyed by fire, lie afterward started another. Un 17th of December, 1874, this saloon was broken into and all the whisky and other liquor destroyed. Tbe affidavits charged tbat on the 'date fusr, mentioned, in the county of Tike and state of Indiana, the defendants, A. C. Ritchie. Mrshal Craig, Robert Craig, Harry Coleman, Thomas Sullivan, John F. Clarke, Ricoard Weedman, John Craig, Ezra Britton and Jacob Olhl, in a violent and tumultuous manner, destroyed bis property by pouring out barrels of whisky, kegs or beer and other liquors, destroying boxes of tobacco, cigars and Christmas toys.then and there the property of John McCarty. Tbe case was tried at Peiersburg last wees. John Peekinpaugh.a boy about eighteen years old, turned state's evidence and made a clean breast. He was one of the party, and bis evidence went straight to conviction. The different parties were represented by able lawyers, and the end was reached on Friday last by a verelct of guilty and tbe imposition ot a fine of 1 and costs each upon tbe defendants. SULLIVAN COUNTY. The Democrat gives the particulars of a sad stabbing affray in this county. It says that last Thursday, one week ago, a serious affray occurred at the Dodd school house, in Cass township, wherein a boy named Adolphus Houck stabbed another boy named Henry Hutchison, four or five times with a pocket knife, inflicting wounds supposed to be fatal. It seems that during play time at school, where both boys are pupils, they got into a fight and were separated by the teacher, a Mr. Stark. In separating tho combatants it was claimed that Stark was unnecessarily severe on tbe Hutchison boy; and from this lact a charge of partiality was brought against the teacher, and a school meeting called for last-Thursday to ask his dismissal. At tbe meeting tbe teacher made a statement ot what be had done in the premises, and Mr.Jerry Hutchison followed with a declaration that bis actiou3 bad been different from his statement, whereupon Mr. Peter Houck told Hutchison tbat he had iied. Hutchison knocked Houck down and was proceeding to punish blm, when their respective sons came to their rescue, and Dolph Houck stabbed Henry Hutchison as stated above. There is one serious cut in the region of tbe kidney, one in the arm, and one or two on the breast. Young Houck has disappeared. The same paper also says that N. Q. Buff, Esq., has effected a sale of the Sullivan City mills, the purchaser being Mr. J. C. Neal, and the price being eonae thing over $17,000, which pays all the incumbrances and leaves a margin of over J3.C00. SHELBY COUNTY. The Shelbyville Volunteer thus refers to the latest jobs rf bridge building in the county: The probabilities are that the county commissioners will build two iron bridges across Sugar creek this season. One at the intersection of three turnpikes at a point just north of the "Red Mills," in Sugar Creek township, and one at the Michigan road crossing in Moral township. The northwestern part of the county have boen prompt in paying their taxes witbout a murmur, while nearly every other portion of the county is provided with bridges built from tbe public crib, and now we insist that it is but of justice that that section be provided with bridges as good as tbey can be built. ' TIPPRCANOK COUNTY. Tbe Lafayette Dispatch says that Edward Riley, a young man from Benton cjunty, now serving out a thirteen days' imprisonment In our palatial lor a petty theft, met with a eevere accident last evening, wnlch will render his right arm useless lor some time to come. While cavorting around on the bannUter, he made a jump to catch the railicg, and, missing his hold, fell, snapping b,th the bones of tho right arm near the wtizt. VANDERBÜRG COUNTY. The navigation of the Ohio river has opened, most cf tbe floating ice having disappeared. The Evansville Courier gives a sad case of supposed lunacy: Justices Morris and Mo Ternan will hold an inquest of supposed lunacy on Fred. Kuhlman, a young man of 25, who is d3plorably Insane. His insanity has gone to such an extreme that it approaches idiocy. Some years ago the father, Mr. Fred. Kunlman, and hl3 wife, bad teu stout sons, and be supported them and reared them in the hops that they would be a stay of his declining years. But disease came iii one form and another, until at last all of tbe sons but one died, leaving him to encourage the last hope ot the fatuer. About a year ago the ycung man gave eyilenca of light insanity, and was examined by the proper officers, but he was not sent to th asylum, at tbe earnest reqiust of the f.tfher, who was williDg to care for him, and insisted that as he was entirely harmless there should be no objection. S be was allowed to remain at home. Ot late, however, be lias become unmanageable, and tbe neighbors about were in fear of sr vie of bis freaks. This was increased when bo, one day last week, drove
his parents from tbe boose in an insane frenzy. The justices went out yesterday afternoon to look at bira. They found him fitting upon a chair in a state of maudlin idiocy. He has entirely lost the power of speech and hearing, and is like a wild animal. The Justices were much affected at the sad sight, the utter wreck of the young man was so plainly evident and his recovery so impossible. He was a good workman and a man fine appearance. He will probably be sent to the ajylnni immediately. At the fair at tho course in June, in Evansville, there will be an admixture of running and trotting matches, so tbat ample variety will be given to entertain spectators. The chief feature of the occasion, as proposed, will be a running race between Morgan's Crown Prince, Funk's Saint George and Dixon's Harry Todd, lor a purse of $ 1,000. It these three fine runners could be brought together it would be a most exciting affair. vioo COUNTY. The Terre Haute Express says that there are now one hundred and three persons who have joined the Mission M. K. Church, I St. Agnes hall, this winter, and the meeting is still in progress. Ellis woolen mills have resumed operations, having repaired damages resulting fronkthe breaking of the crank arm of tbe engine. The Gazette tells ot how a Wisconsin thief broke jail in that city: Charles Clifton and Harry Morgan have been safe in the jiil for some time, but as the charges against the latter could not be satisfactorily sustained, he was released. Yesterday evening, at fi o'clock, this man Morgan came back towards the station bouse and approached the door unnoticed, just as Jerry Purdum was going into Cli'ton's cell with his supper. Just as be opened the door Morgan sprang on him, thrust him to one side and banded Clifton a revolver, telling him to make his escape and defend himself. The revolver was pointed at Purdum's breast but missed fire, and his life was saved. Tbe two men made their escape, running west, it is thought, on Walnut, and crossing the river on the ice. And now Caroline M. Burnbam wants to be admitted to the District of Columbia bar as a practicing lawyeress. There is already one female lawyer at tbat bar, so Miss Burnham's chance is good. As she does not ppell her name "Carrie" or "Callie" or "Cattie," we feel like giving her an indorsement for good sense. But just wait till those two women get on opposite sides of a case! Troy Times.
