HOME AND FARM.
Ifcareii taken In oldins black hos, they can be dressed as whit as any whit h0. It Is a well known principle that all black substances absorb beat. Hence in dressing black bogs the water should not be ao hot as in scalding white ones. If this simple rule be observed, tbere will be no difficulty In dressing black bogs. It not unfrequently happens that, with an open season, sod plowing may be commenced late in the fall and be continued by spells through the entire winter In this latUuda. Besides advancing spring work cd enabling the farmer to thus accomplish more In the year, winter plowing ia la itaeli a benefit, when the ground is in good condition. Don't leave: your wagons, mowing machines, etc, in the weather. It 'iota the wood and rnsts the metal. A shed built with rough posts and covered with straw will save many a dollar as a covering for such things. Paint the wood worL of wagons, hay frames, etc, and see that all the metalic parts of machinery are well coated with oil. Creaking, half-hung farm gates are nuisances 'and annoyances. Any man with ordinary intelligence can make a good gate of rough boards, and hang it bo that it will open and shut conveniently. Bars are oldfashioned nuisances, difficult to construct, difficult to open and more difficult to shut. A good farmer nowadays discards them, as he should. Lameness in bogs is caused sometimes by the large pores in the back part of the legs getting clogged. They are a little above the k n uckles in the back part of the legs. Wash the legs with soap and lukewarm water, using ä stiff brush and rubbing bard till the pores open, and when the pores are washed open the lameness will leave. This has been tried in numerous instances with great success. Iu open weather take the opportunity to put the fences in thorough repair; straighten up posts, replace old plank with new, and drive a nail wherever needed. Worm fences are elective barriers, but the corners are hot-beds for the production of noxious -weed'. If planks or wire are not handy, It would be better to stake the corners, and lay the rails straight, so that the plow may run close up to the fence line. Many person, for reasons best known to themselves, defer the bog-killing season to January and February, and it is for these laggards we have collected the following Information: Select a clear, cool day if possible not freezing upon which to kill; the bogs should have had nothing to eat for at .least twenty-four hours before being slaughtered; as soon as they have stiffened bang up in a cool, dry place for the night, and the next day cut up and pack away. Size of Barrels. A president of an agri cultural society .calls attention to the fact that there are in a standard legal barrel only 100 quarts, while in the ordinary flour barrel, most iu use among farmers iu the sale of potatoes and apples, contains nearly oneeighth more. Farmers eell their produce In ilour barrels, and merchants transfer the same to standard barrets, making a profit on quantity, a well as on the price. In the sale of 600 barrels of potatoes from a farm, the proprietor loses 100 barrels worth 5250, for which he might as well be paid. The middle-man, not the consumer, profits by this. Farmers, see to it that you employ the one hundred-quart barrels hereafter. Pacific Rural Press. To Measure Corn in the Ear. A farmer asks how to measure corn In the ear, or in the crib or bin. There are several rules for this, but the most common is what ia called the 28-iuch rule that is, upon the presumption that a box one foot square and 28 Inches deep will boid one bushel when shelled. This rule applies only to the dent or gourdseed variety of corn. The cubical contents in feet are first ascertained, and this multiplied by three and divided bv eeyen, which will give the bushels of shelled corn of fifty-six pounds. Thus a crib that is thirty-two feet long, eight feet wide, and thirteen feet high in the average, will bold 1,425 buähela, and two of them bushels. A common wagon box, eleven feet long and two feet high, would hold twenty-eight bushels of corn in the ear. Another rule for the farmer's boy is to reduce the contents to cubic inched and divide by 4,032, which will give him, the bushels. Protecting Yoünq Trees from Rabbits. Of all the plans for the protection of young orchards from rabbits, I find nothing that so well agrees with my own experience and Judgment as the following: Mix soft soap and the flowers of s alphur to the consistency of a thick paste, and apply once or twice during the winter with a brush. The other, which is by alL means the best, is to take a .piece of common building paper, about, eighteen inches in height and ten or twelve wid, and bend it loosely around the tree, and tack it with a single tack near the center, and the work is done In the most effective manner. Common building felt will also do. Before putting the paper around -the tree, it should be examined for borers. The .paper will probably retain its position for two or three years. It will also afford a good protection to trees that have been set out during the lall. Cor. Bural World. Caring .fob Implements. The Journal of the Farm well says: There is noprinci pie in farming better established than that all tools and machines should be boused when not in use, and every firmer who neglects this is greatly wanting In the element of economy. The mowing machine that is left standing in the fence corner can not be expected to do good work, and for wooden Implements the case is worse still. The prudent farmer not only houses his implements, but he devotes rainy and snowy days to repairing them. A mowing macbinthe journals of which are cleaned of their accumulation of grimed grease, and carefully oiled, will run twenty-five per cent, lighter and fifty per cent, longer than one that does not receive this attention. Joseph Harris says bis hardest task with hired men 1m to make them take care of the tools oiid iarui. ro wonaer sucn men never reach the good fortune of having farms of their own. Treatixo Wounds. Every person should know bow to treat a Uesh wound. Every one Is liable to be placed in circumstances away from surgical and veterinary aid, where he may save bis own life, the life of a friend or a beast, simply by the exercise of a little common sense. In the first place, close the lips of the wound within the bands and bold them firmly toretber to check the flow of blood until several stitches can be taken and a bandage applied. Tüen bathe the wound for a long time in cold water. "Should it be painful," a correspondent says, "take a panful of burning coals and sprinkle upon them common brown sugar and bold the wounded part in the smoke. In a minute or two the pain will be allayed, and the recovery proceeds rapidly. In my case a rusty nail had made a bad wound in my foot. The pain and nervous irri tation were severe. This was all removed by folding it in smoke filteen minutes, and I was able to resume my reading in comfort.' We bive often recommended it to others with like Jesuit. Last week ono of
my men bad a finger-nail torn out by a pair of'ice tongs. It became very painful, as was to be expected. II eld in sugar smoke twenty minutes, pain ceased and promised speedy recovery." Wister Work. One ot the oldest and uost extensive farmers in Vermilion county, Ind., has experimented largely on destroying brush and briars, and ou the methods of preventing sprouting auor being cut. After extensive experiments, be find that by cutting underbrush and briars in the winter, when the ground is frozen hard, say in January or February, that they are most easily killed. They sprout some in the spring, but a little care in cattins them back, for m year effectually destroys them, the roots rot and they disappear. The ground should be frozen bard when the first cutting is done. Cutting at such time breaks and shivers the stem to the ground, and although be has no lengthy theory on the subject, 8 thorough and practical test ot the method proves it a good one. It has been tried on extensive anas ot land. We also bear that in the Southern part of the state this method has been tried with success, and those having tracts of land encumbered with brambles and briers which they wish to make available should try this method during the cold weather. We need hardly add that one could keep warm at that kind of work. Indiana Farmer. The Grasses. Dr. Bachelder, of Central Sew York, talks thus of the different grasses with which be has been experimenting: Berrennial rye grass be considers of no value for hay or pasture, as it will not endure the
winters, bat Italian rye grass, be says, is hardy anywhere in New York, and is cneot the most valuable grasses known either to cut for soiling or for bay. In vigor it is like orchard grass.but is finer in texture.and and is of the "cut and come again" kind, often producing twa crops of hay in a season, and then a rich aftermath. Meadow fescue he finds to be one of the most vigorous grasses, adapted to either meadow or pasture. It equals timothy in the amount otbay, andcan be cut at the same time. It ia a good grass to grow ith timothy. Sweet' vernal grass ought to be grown in the meadow to give fragrance to the other bay. Cattle devour it with great eagerness. Orchard grass alone, or with the medium clover, is valuable, but then it ripens too soon for timothy. If cut just before the flower-scape opens, it makes a valuable hay, but if left till it ripens it is no better than rye straw. Timothy, Italian rye grass, meadow fescue, red-top, meadowoat grass, and red clover npen well enough to make good bay, and are well adapted to the climate, which is the great consideration. The proportion he gives of each is as follows: Timothy, ten pounds; Italian rye, five pounds; meadow-oat grass, Mve pounds; vernal grass, two pounds; red clover, eight pounds. For pasture he thinks June and orchard grass the best. The doctor thinks the Alfalfa will prove valuable in the West and .'Southwest. AFFLICTED, Pause and consider whether It Is better for your present trouble and future health to nu th Samaritan's Uift or be gorged with the quack's Balsam Copabi.t, which drug Is a sure teil-tale, having a horrid taste and still more disgusting smell.
