CASK OF INDIANA SOT FULLY STATED. The Financial Chronicle ot November 14 gives the following careful table, showing the debts of each ot the respective state?. The Chronicle seems not to remember tbe action of Indiana'! last legislature, and of the state amending .her constitution so as to prohibit the payment ol the canal bonds iorever. The Garrett fconcU have been paid in lull. The Chronicle aavs: .In the table below we present the total amount ot the debt of each state, and the amount estimated to be held by foreigners. The figures for tbe total debt aro well ascertained, but the amount of bonds held are in some cases necessarily estimates. There is much more ol definite information about tbe latter, however, than may be generally supposed. In case ot registered stock a record of holders is preserved; then the sterling issues are known to be held abroad, and in addition to these sources of information we have received careful estimates from brokers dealing most largely in particular bonds, from foreign bankers, and from agencies where interest is paid. The table is. therefore, presented with some confidence that its approximations are very close. The footings are a9 follows : Total State debts, ?3S2,370,517, of which there is held abroad $92,924,000; total bonds in default, (including Louisiana and Virginia, whose interest has been partly paid) ?14 ,732,000, of which there- is held abroad 554,174,000. The circumstances under which the different states now in default originally came into thiir unfortunate position have been widely liflerent, and they are entitled to very dilerent degrees of consideration. Mississippi is looked upon as the originator of state repudiation in this country, and her bonds hsued in and and repudi

upon the fair name of tbe state. A part of those bonds were actually sold at 113, and the moner received bv the Btate. In diana made a compromise with her bondholders in 1840. crtvlntr them state stock for one-half of their bonds and over duecouDons. and Wabash A Erie Canal stock for the balance, about $7.500.000. the legislature declaring at that time that it would neve? make provision for the pay ment of bonds not surrendered for exchange in that way, and thus making the surrender almost comDulsorr. Tbe canal nas proved worthless, and the creditors claim tbe full payment lor their shares from tbe State. By the rules of honor which eovern business transactions tmonar lndiyidualt they seem to be entitled to it. On a few of the old bonds not surrendered Mr. J. NV. Garrett, of Baltimore, recently recovered a judgment for their full amount In an action, against tbe canal trustees. REVIEW OP THE HOME MARKETS. WKKKLT BKVIKW 'OF THB INDIANAPOLIS WHOLESALE MARKETS. Monday I;xnino, November 18. The latter part of last week was characterized general firmness in prices. Corn and hogs tave been steadily advancing, the latter mar ket being excited for several days. Wheat quotations are unchanged In this market as they have been kept pretty strong all through, but the market at other points is firm. Th demand for all classes of general dry goods merchandise may be considered fairly active, yet buyers in general are using great care and only purchase in moderate quantities to meet Immediate wants. Prices rule low with but very small margin to the Jobber, and owing to constantly nuciuaiory prices, mujr biuui iwwb occur. (Stocks are well assorted and In a mach more desDnble shape than at this time last year, the same will apply to retailers, collections and linDrovlnn somewhat and Indications are that tnev will continue, lucre i u vuauso m givceries from the dullness noted heretofore, üuysrann nntanticlnate their wants but take only such goods as their actual needs require. Prices are pretty generally asuiuu. vu wur iuc Is a firmer feeling based- upon favorable European and Brazilian advices of a late date; the teuor of the market has been that of lassitude and disinclination to taice hold until there should spring up an improved demand is is believed tnat with an Increase of orders prices will tend upwards. Blocks are acenmu atlng in the Eastern trade centers, but stocks here and elsewhere in the West are light and must be replenished with the least sign of returning activity. Coffees East range from 15 to 20r gold, with fancy grades held Ho better. Prices are about tbe same as last noted as in quotations. Teas are dull. Coal oil active and low. Rice is lifeless and unch an ged. Hy rnps quiet and with out features of interest. Hagars are produced beyond demand, hence refiners, to effect sales, are accepting low prices, say on a basis of Wtp tor nnrtrl A. We reduce Quotations to cor respond. Spices active and unchanged. Hominy U TXS per barrel. Just at this time t e fish market Eastis crowded with the Incoming cargoes, and for the moment prices are reduced, a condition regarded only as temporary. Butter Is firm and sells at 20, 22 ana cents ior me oest. Eggs are very firm at 22c and worth really more than that Maure. Fruit and vegetable in good supply and bringing Just fair prices, (lame is felting plenty and cheap. Quails worth only 1 25 to II 50.
