FINANCE AND BUSINESS. GENERAL MARKET REVIEW. MONET MATTERS.
Collections are still very slow from the country. The movement of the bog pro
duct dots no; begin to l-e felt yet as it will be within two or three week, and though some grain is sold, the amount i comparatively light. Farmers are not disposed to sell at present prices. Consequently, money continues close. In Chicago the demand is reported some--what stronger. The Intei-Ocean, however, nays: A prominent commercial bank of ibiaeity loaned f 100,000 to the county of Cook for six months at eight per cent, per annum. In almost any previous Jill the .bank in question would cot have been willing to loan for six months, and certainly not as low as eight per cent. We hear also of money offered in the open market for six months at nine per cent, per annum on collaterals. The bank rate of discount is nominally tfu per cent., though a" koo J deal of short time first rl&ra paper is taken at lower rates. The clearings of the Chit-ago b-auks lor the past week were $5,113,439 ttt; corresponding week last year, 18,603,701 71. CHICAGO U RA 12 MARKET, The Inter-Ocean. 6i Monday, Nov. 9, sums 1 -Hp the situation thus: The Improvement noticed in the prain markets yesterday were more fully developed during the first hnll of the tension to-dv, and a considerable advance was established all round; the only exception to thia central ml being the bar ley trade. Theiiitluenres affecting tie trade und governing the movement of specula' or 11-1 c pern tors fri, erally now of about the me tenor aa those n ted tor "evernl day pat, viz.: light rrcfiits and decreasing stocks in store. A reference to the staretnent rf the receipts and shipments for the past week will show the extent of tho decrease of the stock in store; the excess of the
shipments over the receipt being about
12,000 Dushels ol wheat, 375,000 bushels of corn, and IK 1.000 bushels ot oats; while there was an excess in favor of tbe receipts of rye and barley. The receipts are very Jight, and speculators generally do not seem inclined toexp'cfcany large increase in tje arrivals. It is generally believed and admitted tbat the leading markets wheat and, corn are largely olj for future delivery, and now borU wbttbave been bearing the markets for weeks past, are beginning to realize the-ir situation, and iheir efforts to provide ir tbeir trades are forcing the prices tos higher range. This is especially the case with corn, the improvement in thi grain being more marked sod noticeable than are the other grains. Receivers and holders are generally very firm in their views, and do not show any disposition to force sales, even the lilieral advance in balances laimig to produce any increase in the Ottering. The Ei-tern markets are firmer, but European advices are not particularly encouraging. The movement Is stiil almost wholly oi) speculating account, the scarcity of cih grain making it difficult for shippers to purchae, while the advance in the oust here reduces the shipping margin. THE LUiiLH.lt TRADE. A (1LUT ALREADY AND A REM JNSIRANCE. The lumber dealers ara everywhere exerting themselves to check tue cut.ing of lumber next winter. Cbicng dealers have issued the following circular: To the Lumber Manufacturers of the Northwest: 0 The lamh-r firms condnctlnsr the yard business of Chicago, have learned, lrom the most reliable source with rrtijret.that h arrangement for mill owners lor bsnlin? logs trie coming winter show a targe increase, as compared to the too Urg m nufic'.ure of 1874, at several. If not all, the priuein! producing section-; and . a we beliee nothing but a want of , know e.lRe of th present, condition of the mark U at the; rinc pa distributing points would troin ta i lucre t-e, whe t only a large reloc:ion of tnanu(acUir- Wju prtt. vent great los-to all i-Uxses of lumbermen. Any onibina i m that coii'd b frmd to reduce mriii'a-tiite woul i surelv nil for lack of in anlmity, and would in 'the end proJu'-e t he evil it w in end-d to prevent, ilut tl o deired result my bj produetd bv Jnloruiing inauufnclurers vi the propped
supply at the principe lumber district, and thus appeal to their better judgment aa well as their financial interest, and cause a voluntary reduction troui plana already made for hauling logs during the approaching Mlnter. Theaverage annual receipts of pine lumber at the port of Chicago for the three yeara last past exceeds 1,000.000.000 feet, and of this vast amount more than half is received and paid for by lumber dealers who own no taw mills. In other words, the yard interest pavs annually, In cash, on delivery here to mill owners who have no docks in Chicago, the sum of ?6.000,000 tor lumber, and an additional sura. of IOOO.OOO lor shlnglee, lath and other lumber-products. The mills that saw lumber for the "Exchange'! market, fbreale flat, depend ,w holly . on yard dealers tovfurnwu funds to. operate their mills in summer, and repay jidvances received tionj commission firms during winter.: i.: --. . The course pursued by these mill-owners during, the present sesou ot 1874, would, in almost any other branch ot trade, have brought ruin to the parties who furnished tho working capital, and owing to their laige roanulacture, have caused a declining market during the entire season, and an average depreciation of 10 per ceut. in the value-ef stocks in pile. If. during 1875, an' amount of lumber exceeding 1)0,000,000 loet is consigned to this market, yard prices wilt decline below 10 for common lumber at retail, and a propor
tionate discount in the value of all stock of
lumber here must bo the result, and 1876 will find the number of yard dealers reduced one-half, as they must seek other fields of investment for their capital, as their predecessors did in 1858. " Tne shrinkage of valuta by over prodiction, will. If contiuued, drive many yard dealers from traJe; but the sime cU4u is responsible for a greaterevil, tbat bid- fair to reduce the number of mill owners also, during 1S70. Previa to 1S65, credi's were seldom asked on lumber at wholesale, and return were expected inside 30 days for yard tales. Now, an average of more than tk) days' time is given on yard business, if any profit Is realized. This is the natural result ot forcing sales on a market already overstocked, and one that mill owneis are wholly responsible fir, and if continued, yard dealer will claim, and be enabled to compel, a credit on all cargo lumber sold afloat in Chicago. 8o great is the desire ot manufacturer at Lake Huron ports to dispose of the present surplus, tbat lumbermen with good credit can to-day purchase any amount of cargo lumber ol them, on ninety days' credit, and in some instances at four months, without interest. From present indications a change from cash to credit for cargoes in this inirket is expected hereafter, as; with the exception of the Chicago lumber exchange sales, lumber i usualiy sold on credit at wholesale. Titi change effected, no combination of mill owners will be required to supply will be required to limit the supply hereafter. For tr.e lol lowing good reasons all prudent mill owners w ill reduce rather than increase their business until the surplus lumber now in market is much reduced: 1. That durifg the season of 1874 no profit has bren realized, and from excessive manu
facture the market of the country are now
large! v ov r-totkei, wit h no propect or a
permanent advance in prunes.
1. That tho iuaniuraiion of sales of car
goes on cred t bv iu nufaeturers during 1874
will, in case of exceive nu-.u facta re, very
oou become the custom ot the market. .1. That a further shrinkage in the value of lumber will cause the withdrawal of large amounts of capital now lurnihhed by
yard dealeis, a c!as that pay for and distribute more than half the entire product
of saw mills.
4. That all concede that a large amount of
lumber forced on tie market in 1874 must
cause a low range ot prices, and a reduction,
ithtr great or small, will place the business on a better foundation.
