butter. -XAfJFICATION WKSTKIIN 15 UTTER. Tbc New York Bulletin givea the report of the committee on the butter trade, in whleh aro the lollowiLg points of interest: The classification submitted first classifies butter an eas.ern and western, and next in" to extras, firsts, seconds and thirds ol each. Kwtern constitutes tho supplies from the .Kaster n Hiatea, and We stern is the product wet of New York and Pennsylvania. This is necessitated by the wide difference in the onsluies and prices actually existing between the productions of tfce Eastern S'ates s.nd the balk of those supplied from Western States. This method of grading by ex--tras, firsts, seconds and thirds is simole, prim jcaI, and not experimental, it having been long in practice in older countries. In regard to the proposition of providing a plan which shall enable sellers ol butter of any description to offVr it for sale or for bids at the exchange as calif d from the IM under the clarification, your committee regard it as entirely practical, and recommend its n;l.-p' kn. It ia believed that it will greatly facilitate the transaction of business on a basis open to both buyers and tellers, and r-anlt ill establishing a precise and curafe list oi quotations and correct rmrket reports. It will enablo buyers to purchasg or contract at tho exchange for any description of butter, and thereby check mischievous speculation in the iuterior and regulate this tendency in Now Y'ork. Already the healthy movement of the present State crop is cheeked by these speculative purchases in the interior of the limited class ofbuttrr tow elaw-ifieJ here as extra?. Without doubt, under the new system these contract will bo made here more satisfactorily to all puttie, and with loa detriment to tLe vmn- of trado and the movement of tfce crpOf Western batter arriving at this market it is e-'itim'el that leu than two per cent, is nude on the system fjl lowed in the Stato oi New York. Is the Western States, as a w hole, ttio herds are comparatively 6raall, ai d the waters and grazing la many tecvk.us irapur. The butter is gathered in -aiall parcels, and reworked together in order to havo it uniform in character, all ol Which is more or less injurious to its kepn? qualities. While greit strides oi irnpröveni- Ii ta have taken place to the extent of an enhancement of its market value eome 40 j.r rent, in two or throe years, there is still room for great progress by the adoption of tho Rastern ayntem and co-operalion vr itb the transportation companies in recommending and encouraging improved facilities for afe and quick transportation. Already in many dairy sections of the Western fStatea qualities are produced nearly equal to Eastern, and give evidence beyond question that if made and marketed by the same process would be quite as good. TUB LUMBER INTEREST. The nationalJLumbermen's Association, in session at Kast 8aginaw, on the 16th, passed resolutions declaring that the Canadian lumbermen hold a largo let of pino land limits allow rates, and without risk of loss to standing timber by fire, while we must buy lands at much higher prices and incur loss by fire. Wages are lower in Canada; they pay no taxes to support our Government, save duties on lumber, etc., and are almost entirely exempt from taxes on their Luhnes at borne, while we share the cos's of the support of town, county, State and nation. Resolved, that the reciprocity treaty asked for by British and Canadian officials would grant to men in another country our privileges, white they have no share of our burdens or risks, and that wc earnestly oppose
it as unjust and dangerous to the interests of
the whole eoantry; and that the introduction of said treaty for ratification by the Senate, so near the close of the session, makes it
very apparent that its projectors hoped for the consummation ol this iniquity before the vigilance of the people was awakened to
the gravity of t his outr?ge. iii-wolvcd. That said treaty, if ratified
would result in the paralysis' ot our
industrial pursuits and interests, and
arrompli-ib the invigoratlon of those fcf
British America; and, whereas, it is appar
ent that that there ia an overstock of lumber
now ftianu factored and on the market, which fact bas reduced prices so low that
manufacturers gt little or nothing for tim
b?r standing in lo rests, and an unpromising
outlook ot onr financial affairs the coming
season therefore.
Resolved, That we do hereby pledge ours' lves, individually and as an association, to
use all honorable means to bring the supply within the limits of demand, and to that
erd we hereby agree to reduce the manufac
tare of our mills the coming season at least
one-third below the amount manufactured
for the last two years, and that we invite
our brother lumberman to co-operate with
es in pecurlng the object, provided that the Hpir.t and practice of thin resolution ehall be
generali y agreed to among lumbermen. REVIEW OP THE HOME MARKETS

ANCIENT TROY.
K X TRACTS OF A X.KTTEP. FROM DR. STTIUll.
JK A N II I STf I lIC A L VALVB OK TDB LATE ARC HEO LOGICAL DIbCOVKvKlHH.! The Troy N. Y. ) Times con tains the follow
ing additional tesU irony from a private lew
ter of Dr. Schliemann himself, goinz to show
the validity of bis early tbeorp: It will, no doubt, be interesting to yoa and to our.'
honored friend, Prof. North, to hear that Prof. II; (J. rn pei z in Vientabas already suc
ceeded in deciphering ten of wy Trrjan inscriptions, ail ol which srwinvery prim-
Mve Cyprian character, but oontaia pure
Greek words. Thus tho important fact U established that the Trojsns snoke Ureck.
But the chronology of these mouuments.
as well as of all objects which came irom the
burnt city in from 23 to 33 feet below t be surface, is now generally acknowledged to be between l.SOOand 2,001) before Christ, while lhe
Homenc hvmns can not be older than 900
years beforo Christ. But Troy's tragic! lato
had reman ed in fresh memory, tor it was sung in numerous rhapsodes, and probably
by hundreds of them before tlomer, whose -
poems are alone pr served bocsuse they were
the most sublime and perfect Troy wis
rebuilt, arid 10 feet above the ruins ol the
ancient lhon you lind a posterior prehistoric, city, which must alno have been destroyed, fr, like iu 1 roy and like in Ponipey you cau dig up there the skeleton of every.
hcue. In the Egyptian poem tr 1 tntasus, . which dates from tue litteeutbceuinry before Christ, the Trojans of Ilion are described as fighting aguiutt Hainase? I., the Hemosti is of the Greeks, whilo in tho sculptures of
Mcdlnet-Abou at Theoea (Egypt) which
date from tbe end ot the fomuenth to the
beginning of the thirteenth century before
Christ, the Trojans etill appear as one ot the most powerful nationsot tbe coasts of,
the Mediterranean; but all tbeeo Trojans
must derive from the prehistoric city which ,
you find in IS to 1 feet below tho rurlave, ou the top ol Troy. No doubt THE KITE OF TROT . had been abandoned and nn inhabited for centuries beforo the ago of .Homer, tor the objects, and particularly the idols, found even in the highest prehistoric layers of ruins, show an immense difference in age when compared with those described by . 1 Ioiuer ; besides, he latter continually speaks ot iron w bereas I never four.d a trace of iron In any onocftre four prehistoric cities of , Troy, and not even in tbe uppermost, which just precedes the Ilium of tho Greek oa'ony. , John Muiray, of London, who is well known by his guidebooks ior travlers, is now going to publish my work on Troy in auEuglLdi drees, and with, I think, all my 21S tablets which he has s;ot beautifully engraved. I trust this English translation will be well received all over tbe globe, for tbe world's enthusiasm for the Iloiueric song will neversu beide as long as onr planet is inhabited by men. The Titnf e add?: "In this connection wo may stato that we have information to the e fleet that a plan of settlement haa been screed upon between Dr. Schliemann sod the Turkish government, by which the loirner is to pay the barbarians one half of the value ot the treasure.
taken from the site of ancient Troy.. Three
experts have been chot-en to make estimates of the value of the intercuts thus conceded to
the Turkish government, and as soon as ,
their report is made I)r. Schliemann will settle the demand, and come into undis
puted posession of his treasures, which he values above all prio."
The collection of. paiuilags lent by the. Duko of Montpensier to the Boston Mu-eura of Fine Art arrived in Boston on Tuesday. They are picked in 15 caes, and are in fine order.
