upon the first month of tummer with some encouraging indications ot- revival of business. The country has beei. cautious la its spring .purchases ot mercmodise, and its wants, even if the same cautio is continued, will now be such that trade m.st Improve, f r the surplus stock Is penerallyryoikedoff. There is some surplus in the bands.of manufacturers of many kinds of goods, but production has been curtailed, and dmbtless will be until the demand warrants a full resumption at remunerative prices. luoney has beceme so plenty, and rates of interest have fallen to low, that business men feel more confidence that they can employ it to arttrnntncrA- eaneciallv as thev can obtain U ot.
longflrtime. Congress will adjourn in about',
three weeks, when their po-ver lor miscniei on the currency question will be over, and as it seems to be settled that there will be bo legislation which will help matters at all, it is to be hoped that there will be none whatever. If the president will appoint a man of sound views and practical experience in financial matters for secretary of the treasury, he will do more to promote the business interestsof the country than congress is likely to do, because auch a man could so shape the monetary matters of the government, even under existing laws, as to inspire confidence, which is more needed now than anything else. We oan scarcely expect much activity In trade until next autumn, but gradual improvement seems probable. BAI.TIMORK COFFER MARKET. pounded sundry interrogatories, especially regarding what they called irreconcilable
discrepancies in the cost of printing certain kinds of fractional currency as noted in Mr. McCartee's schedule. This was answered in

The Bulletin of Saturday reports for May
iz). All the sales or gold to day were at U2l4 Ct,2. The rates on gold loans were 2 per cent, for carrying to "flat." The assistant treasurer to-day paid out 1326,000 gold. Fore'go exchange was quiet and steady at t4 873i(R8S, and 4 00?ii4 91 for prime bankers' sterling. The London market for securities to-day was strong and higher, with
money very easy and below the Bank of
England rate. The custom receipts at the sub-treasury amounted to $1,745.700 during the week, and the coin disbursements to f 1.44,0C0. The imports of dry goods for the -week amounted to tl.450,459. The amount marketed was $1,339,607. The exports of domestic producta for the week amounted to f5j376,034. The Cincinnati Gazette begins the month trith these pertinent remarks: "We enter

2tfW YOP.K DRY GOODS. The Journal of Commerce says the mar
et has exhibited but little show of
business, although there has been a mod
erate traffic in progress in most of the dif
ferent departments. From first hands the
sales tave been chiefly made in small lots of such goods as were required for immediate trade; the jobbers have had a steady de
mand for small assorted stocks either by personal application or by orders from interior dealers, and their aggregate distrit'utioua havA been to about the usnal

date has been of the most wholesome character, and the indications &ie looked upon as favorable to satisfactory results, notwithstanding the habitual complainings of many of the slackness of trade. There is an apparent undertone of strength in the market in reference to future values of both coiton and woolen labrics based upon the present and prospective prices of the raw staples, and there is also n growing confidence among manufacturers that any change in rates of standard goods of either dwcrlption preparatory to the autumn tretftc will be to higher nzures,There is consequently a positive indisposition on the part of holders to press sales at any concession from current quotations. The fourquarter Lonsdale cambric muslin has been marked down two cents per yard ; otherwise prices have been steadily maintained. THE ENGLISH IRON TRADE. A letter from Birmingham, under date of the 16tb, says : "The trade continues in the depressed and disorganised state which has now characterized it tor the last two months or more. Business is almost at a standstill, and it is not easy to see what or bow a change is to be brought about until prices a' 1 around are very considerably reduced. This will imply, or course,a further reduction in coal, which will necessitate a fresh reduction of wages over and above that which the masters are at present contending for, and in all probability a new and prolonged atrug gle between coalmastera and their workpeople. The general opinion of iron masters seems to be that all these difficulties would be removed if colliery proprietors would frankly adopt the proposal of the mihers and appoint a gentleman as arbitrator, as is now done in the iron trade, or even a board of conciliation might prove effective. The masters, however, appear to be so confident ot their own strength that they absolutely refuse to assent to any measures that may seem to savour of a compromise, and there is therefore no alternative but for those interested in the iron trade to await the issue of the coal struggle with patience." REVIEW OP TUE HOME MARKETS WEEKLY .REVIEW OF THE INDIANAPOLIS - WHOLESALE MARKETS. Monday Evening, June. L The only feature of note in the market is the decline in grain, especially of corn. Now that the farmers have their corn planted and the sure prospect of a good stand, old corn is put on the
market and the supply amounts to a glut. Provisions are firm and prices steady. The dry goods trade is satls'.actory to merchants, with no chan ie of prices to note, iirocerifs quiet.tales of 1U cars corn, high, mixe i. 4,0iO bushel, at f7c; 200 tierces bams, 11 pounds average, at 12c.
