t.KNKUAL MARK KT P.EVIttVY. MONET NOTES. ThoNew York Herald, May 8, saya: The outtlow to-day of f500,000 in gold coin, and tO.OX) !a silver, caused a renewal of the discussion concerning the effect of loreifrn ahlpmentsoa the market. It is yet too eat ly, however, to indiate results; for while present prices of exchange encourage exports, and there is a good demand for our produce, the varying value caused by speculation in gold makes it extremely difficult to predict anv substantial condition. The market allowed but little activity, the principal dealings being at 112'4'. with an advance toward the close to 112J. The carrying rates were 3i, 3, 1A, 1 and finally 4 per cent. Ijoans were made flat. The operations of the Gold Exchano Bank to-day were as follows: Jold balances IJWfiTa Currency ....... 1,U!,727 dross clearances 41,&y,0t0

During the 12 months under comparison, there has leen an increase of 23 in the num

ber of bank, of $6,300.000 In the amount of capital, and of $3,300,000 in tbe amount of

circulation ; tbe azzr gate of notes outatand

ing, however, beiug still (at tbe date of this return) $14,600 000 below tbe sum authorized

by law. The amount of loans and discounts

is $19,000.000 lower than a year previous, while in the "individual deposits'' there is the very large reduction of $60,800,000, a de

cline ot 10 per cent., which la traceable

mainly to the process of liquidation of pri

vate indebted uetts consequent upon tbe

panic It has been fcuppoaed that tbe ex

perience of the September crisis would

induce tb country banks to keep larcrer

amount of th-ir funds at home, and less with

their redemption ageuta; but this has not

proved to be tbe case; on the contrary, the

item "due from redeeming and leserve

agents" shows an increase of $5,700,000. y-ROVISIONS IN CINCINNATI.

THE LARD MARKET. (Cincinnati Trice Current, May L)

Lard has advanced a full cent per pound bisher than it touched all last year, and

there is a disposition to hold it for a further

advance. At its present price the currtnt make will doubtless be largely increased, for it will pay better to render aides Into lard than to buy ice cure tbem, and if there

should be any further advance of conse

uuence, we may see the whole hog except

shoulders and haras rendered Into lard, which h as&ood for manufacturing purposes as any other, and it is tbe manufacturing

demand which has used np most of the low er qualities of winter make, and is now com

pelted to take tbe better grades when the

current make proves insumaent. meiow prices ol lard for two years has opened new avenues for its consumption in Kuropeand enlarged the old onee, so that we may count upon a larger foreign demand, and it will be interesting to observe, if we have tbe opportunity, at what point in tbe higher price that demand will be checked. If tbe larger part ol the summer hogs should be made into lard tbe supply of side meat from that source will be inconsiderable. This may account, In a measure, for the greater confidence which

seems to exist in the market for sides than for shoulders. It is said by close observers (hat when lard is high sides meet relatively a better demand, and when laid is low shoulders are most in request. The reason is obvious sides furnish more of the requisite fit than shoulders, and tbey are relatively cheaper than lard. Tbe demand lor bams bas been somewhat retarded by the late spring, but it is becoming more active as tbe weather grows warmer. HONO KONOTEA MARKET. OMphant A Co.'s circular, dated Hong Kong, March 4th, reports quiet markets there, as well as at Canton, Amoy, Foocbow. and Hankow; tbe Chinese New Year holidays, and the near end of the season, which, at some ports, was entirely over, checking transportations, with prices nearly nominal. Shanghae, March 12 The black tea season is nearly closed; greeu tea has sold moderately.

Canton, March 2. Tbe weather is considared favorable for tbe sew leaf; and unless the early spring, which appears to have set in nearly a month in advance, of the usual time, changes very much in .temperature, the new crop of tea will come Into market at a much earlier date than that of last year.

ST. LOUIS COTTON TRADE. The New York Bulletin gives St. Louis a

very strong showing In the following dis

cussion: Tbe aspirations of St. Louis In re

gard to tbe cotton trade are well known; but this season, it U clear, her merchants do no mean to let tbe matter rest entirely in wishing for success, but with characteristic Western energv bare made, and are making, arrangements which will probably result next season in a still more noticeable improve

ment, though tbe percentage of increase in the trade there is even now in advance of

some other markets. Lately, the tit. Louis

Cotton Board decided to offer monetary Inducements, in the ahape of a prize, looking to tbe advancement of the trade, and to be presented at the next cotton fair

there. That market, it is true, is making

every effort to divert trade from New York,

and, while middling upland is quoted here at 17?c, they pay there 17c, which la very close, considering tbe cost ot delivery here,

together with other expenses. New York, however, baa been so often threatened with extermination by other markets, and In

connection with so many different trades.

itbout result, that people here have fallen

into something like skeptic! am In regard to all projects of tbe kind. The one great point

in lavor oi em. Liouia is me important improvement made in its railroad connections with Texas. This bai led to shipments to that market where

heretofore - tbe cotton baa found Its

way to other porta, in tbe season of

1870 71, when the total crop was 4,256,000 bales, St. Louis received very little. Last

year, with a yield of 3,875,000, that market,

np to Mav 4th. had received only 28.000 bales.

while, with an increased crop, it i true, the receipts there for this season up to the date

not a very formidable showiog.but it shows, nevertheless, a very satisfactory percentage of increase. Memphis, although much in advance of St. Louis, looks upon tbe movements there of tbe cotton people with evident concern. This though the receipts there up to the 1st Instant were over 400.000 bales.

The receipt there up to that date were 32,000 bales in excess of 1873, with St. Louis 50,000

oaies ahead or last year. Bat Memphis cannot be destroyed In a day. And now, as to rates of freight, those from St. Louis to New York on the 4th Inst, were 60c to 70c, to Boston 65o to 75c, to Providence 70 to 80c, to Baltimore 50 to 60c, and to Philadelphia 65 to 65c these rates according to the degree of compression. Those from Memphis, where every bale is compressed, on the 1st lnst. were, by all rail,

K2c to New York, to Providence, 93c to Boston, and 77c to Baltimore and Philadelphia. We do not propose to enter Into any discussion of the relative ments of the many markets lor cotton. St. Louis as yet is one of the least, but it is not wise to despise tbe day of small things. Tbey will '-go ahead" there, we may lie euer, if there are anv grounds for progross. Though Ignored ia former year In tbe statistical position, it must now be regarded with more consideration.

GENKRAL MARKET REVIEW. WEEKLY REVIEW OF THE INDIANAPOLIS WHOLESALE MARKETS. Moxday Evening, May 11. The week past was quiet, with steady prices and a general good feeling on tbe market. Grain bas been a little dull and at a standstill, without any decline of prices. Provisions have been firm, with an upward tendency. On Saturday one car load of canvassed hams sold at 12c loose, and 100,000 clear ribs at $3 90. There Is a quiet tone to the market forgroceries, business partaking. In a measure ot the apathy produced by these days of beat. Coffees are very dull and quite weak. Sugars dull but firm. Fish firm, but without any pressing demand. Coal oil dull and not quite so strong. Dried and foreign fruits ol all kinds harden a the warmer weather adds to the call for these goods. Cheese are meeting with a brisk inquiry on a sliding scale, downward. New Orleans molasses dull, scarce and bringing full figHres; the choice grades about out of the market. Teas unchanged and in fair request.
