any favorable chances the market may offer." I have made these quotations from the

o facial reports, translating as literally as I am able to do. in order to show that the

German eovernment is by no means "rvtl

cent" (see leader of the Economist of Maren

23tb) as to Us intentions. Tbe plain truth is,

that it has as yet no considerable stock of

bar silver, but that it is about to establish

sucba b ard. As Ions as the present

privilege of the Bank of Prussia remains un

iltered this may be done without loss of in

terest, this bank being entitled to keep part

of its bullion in silver bars. But whether

such a 8 took of German silver exists already

to some extent or whether it is only part of

a future plan, at all events the government

has no jntentio. of seuinp, unless it can sell

at convenient prices. The iaea, counte

nanced by the gold ultras I have mentioned

before, that the German government was

going te sell the great mans of silver, as it

were, by auction, is therefore an erroneous

one.

GENERAL MARKET REVIEW.

WEEKLY REVIEW OF THE INDIANAPOLIS

WnOLiMALK MARKETS. Monday Evening, April 20.

Without remarkable change, trade for the week past has been on the gain. Corn has been climbing, and dealers have made some money. Dry goods trade is healthy, but only

fair for the season. Provisions are in

a hope i 1 condition, with a cons a u, dui slow advance. On the whole, the regular

business ot the week has been fair, without

anv onenines for speculation to inspire a

disposition to step out of the safe road of le

GERMAN SILVER. SALES NOT TO BB FORCED AT A LOSS. A German correspondent of the London Economist, whom that journal saya "is well informed," writes as follows concerning the silver coinage demonetized by the German government : I beg leave to call your attention to some official statements.'made by President Delbrück, on the question of selling the German silver. The government of the empire have frequently been urged to make haste in selling the German silver, and in the Parliament, as well as in the press, people anxious to get the pure gold standard as a reality, as soon as possible and at any price, have defended the doctrine that tbe German silver ought to be sold as soon as possible and at any price. It will not escape your sagacity that this would be a policy ruinous in a financial point of view, and threatening tbe money market of tbe world and the London money market as its center and representative with great disturbances. I therefore never thoaght it likely that the government would io How the advice given by the radjcal gold ultras. On the other hand, it is evident that it is necessary for the government to sell as much of our superfluous silver as can be got rid of at tolerable prices, and you know best how very small hitherto the sales have been. In the debate of the German parliament of tbe 26th of March, Dr. Bamberger, a great authority in all financial and monetary matters, alluded to the trifling character of tbe sales hitherto effected, ile estimated tbe whole amount disposed of at 10,000,000 of thalers, and saying that this was equivalent to nothing, compared with the great quantity we have to sell, he pressed the government to take more vigorous measures, for else the good luck, by which, as he was very right in observing, our monetary measures hitherto have been favored, might torn, and very awkward consequences might follow. To these observations PRESIDENT DELBRÜCK made the following reply: "If the demonetization of the silver coin has as yet not been afiTected in such a degree as was pointed out as desirable, by the speaker, many causes, and causes ol different character, have combined to bring about such a result. Tbe principal of these causes is the real impossibility of withdrawing from circulation tbe silver coins at once and speedily. We are under tbe necessity to employ tbe whole Kwer of the German mints In the manurturiog of small coins, viz., of copper and nickel coins, and tben of one mark pieces." After having explained that this necessity was brought about by the wants of Southern Germanv, Mr. Delbrück summed up as follows : "Those silver coins which have been subjected to demonetization In order to sell them, haye been sold at reasonable prices.

We continue the demonetization of silver

vktna for the same Duroose as far as it is nos

sible, and you may feel confident that we have the earnest intention, and that we are at

the same time able to keep a stock of

silver, affording the opportunity of using

sudden and sharp advance from 4 per cent currency to

and a vague rumor that some Danks were io

trouble, caused a heavy decline in stocks to

day and disturbed seriously the margins of

the weaker classes ot speculation, and laree

sales for their account helped to depress matters on tbe Stock Exchange.

i.ver since the beptember panic Capron A Merriam have been carrying large amounts

of C. C. A I. C, it Is stated, as high as 24,000

shares. For a day or two back rumors ha vs

been in circulation to the effect that about

20,000 of these shares have been hypothe

cated at the German-American bank and

that in consequence of the change of man

agement in the said institution tbe loan had

been called and that Capron A Merriam were

not able to respond. Under the pressure of

heavy sales the prices declined from 301 to

20, and in three hours from tbe commence

ment of business 50,000 shares changed

hands. A large number of creditors went

to tbe office ot tbe firm seeking a settlement.

and, after considers ble talk as to the manner

of the same, a prominent broker, who bad

been carrying a large amount of stock for

the firm, offered to either carrv stock for

them at 20 or buy stock at 25, Capron A Merriam to pay the difference due. This propo

sition was acquiesced in by a number ot

other creditors present and a paper was im

mediately drawn up and signod by most of

the Interested parties present, agreeing to

mis mode of settlement; but some of the creditors who bad carried margins down to 20, refused to sign, and then com

menced selling out of some stock under

rule; 1,500 shares were thus disposed of. Mr. Capron says misfortune was brought about by treachery ol those he supposed to be friends, for whom be had agreed to carry large amounts of the stock for G090 days. When the market began to break this morning tbe persons for whom he was carrying the stock went into the market without any notice to him whatever, and sold every share they held. Most creditors are willing

to make settlements on favorable terms, and

the firm expect to be on their feet again

soon. Messrs. capron & Merriam are well

MONEY, STOCKS, ETC. Naw York, April 20. This has been an eventful day in Wall street. It opened with the failure of Capron A Merriam and tbe C, C. A I. C. pool nd this was followed by events which precipitated a panic in the Stock Exchange. The failures below noticed were followed by various rumors, all of which tended to disturb Confidence and unsettle matters generally. ! At one time it was currently reported that a Philadelphia railroad official was unable to meet his notes. "Inquiry at the proper sources failed to substantiate tbe rumor.. This was followed by a report that President Grant. would sign the Senate cur rency bill and that Comptroller KvSx would immediately issue instructions to national banks, requiring them to call home their legal reserves, now held for redemption in cities la excess of the amount required under the new law. Then came a report tbat a railroad and steamship war was likely to result from the Inability of the Pacific Mail, Panama and Union Pacific to agree upon some amicable freight arrangement, and that the Central Pacific road was about consummating an agreement with an English company to put on an opposition line ot steamers between San Francisco, Japan and China. All the facts and rumori mentioned above caused an enormous pressure

Boston, Dec 12, 1869. Gentlemen My only object In giving you this testimonial is to spread valuable Information, Having been badly afflicted with Salt Rheum, and the whole surface of my skin being covered with pimples anl eruptions, many of which ' caused me great pain and annoyance, and knowing it to be a blood disease, 1 took many of tbe advertised blood preparations, among which was any quantity of r&rsaparllla, without obtaining any benefit, until 1 commenced taking the Vegetlne; and before I had completed the first bottle I saw tbat I tad got the right medicine. Consequently I followed on with it until t had taken seven bottles, when I was pronounced a well man, and my skin 1, smooth and entirely free from pimple and eruptions. I have never enloyed so good health before, and I attribute It all to the use of Vkgetine. To benefit those afflicted with Rheumatism, I will make mention also of tbe Vsomn k's wonderful power of curing me of thlt acute complaint, of which I have suffered so Intensely. C. H. TUCKER, Pass. A (ft, Mich. C R. R 29 Tyler Street, Boston. ... HAS ENTIRELY CURED ME. Boston, October, 1870. Mr. II. R Stkvens: Dear Sir My daughter after having a severe attack of whooping coogh. was left in a feeble state of health, being ad vised by a friend, she tried the Veoetine, and after using a few bottles, was fully restored to health. I have been a great auffeter from Rheumatism. I have taken several bottles ot tbe Veuetine for this complaint, and am happy to cay it has entirely cured me. I have recommended the Vegetlne to other,, with the same good result. It is a great cleanser and purifier of tbe blood; it is pleasant to take; and I can cheerfully recommend iL JAMES MOUSE, 364 Athens street. ISO TROUBLE SINCE USING VEGETINE.
