At the last session of the general assembly the secretary of state was authorized to establish in his oil ice a bureau of statistics; but, unfortunately. the bill prepared by the committee on statistics to provide the material for such a bureau failed to become a law lor want of a final vote. The president, on motion, was directed to notify eacn member of the department for which he is to furnish a committeeman. Judge Martindale suggested that the question or hiring a superintendent of the exposition proper should, perhaps, be talked over. It was taken by consent that the executive board were clothed with full power to engag" such an officer, arrange terms, etc., with. him. Mr. Seward offered the following: Resolved, that our superintendent be authorized to rent stalls and allow the use of our time track, by parties who are wiiliug to submit to such just restrictions as the superintendent may dictate, and pay a reasonable prico for the privilege granted. Adopted. Also the following: Resolved, That our treasurer be required to furnish the board each day with the cash receipts of the day be lore, during the time ot the state fair and exposition. Adopted. Mr. beward moved that 300 be placed at the disposal of the superintendent, to defray necessary expenses during tho interim ol board meetings. Carried. Mr. Claypool moved that t he secretary be authorized to employ an assistant, at a salary not exceeding f600 por annum. The evidence adduced in the investigation is exceedingly voluminous, tut it s unuerstood that the report and r com mendations of the commissioners will ' be pointed and briefand it is suggested t.'iat when published cannot fail to be quite satisfactory to all parties.
