I Ingemneranee in St. Louis. Tfc 8. Louis Dernoornt concludes an elaborate arti

by public- aentianenl, the vice of intemperance becomea next to an impossibility in the State of Maine. How the fact may be, we have now no means of judging ; nor are we prepared to say that public- opinion in this State would sanction a law so stringent in its provisions', and to inquisitorial in some of the means of enforcing it Be that as it may, there can be but one opinion as to the necessity or some kind of legal enactment for the suppression, or at least the diminution of the vice of in-, temperance It prevails in St. Louis to a more frightful extent than it probahlv does i any other town or pefT4(Jf, R raDk, j of ociety, und is tbo frtghtM cause of those countless i)rachea of the peace and mnrderoas fights which have iven to this cit a bad notoriety abroad. It is mainly jatemperaoce that we must ascribe the swarms of ., offender who crowd the calaboose and the Recorder, Court, well a the common jail, the Criminal rjr, tn0 work house Were the evil -ntirely . nrced tber would scarcely be any need of snch innjnt soma aseasuro lor its protection against the dearily foe. The Art of Sweeping. "Oh, theie is no art in sweeping," cry tbe girls, "any one can do that." Hiu methinks, could half the suffering and injured Ibngs, irri'ated by thu dust thrown into the air wv inhale, relate to us their stories, we would truly think there it some art in sweeping. When I see a young lady with shoulders thrown forward and body beut to a stooping postore. using he broom in such a i flinging mannr as to thoroughly saturate the air with dust, and sending finer particles of dirt to every part ai t of sweeping. Many will instantaneously scatter a ' bevy of persons engaged in pleasant conversation by an 1 I ill-timed sweeping, or render nncorafortahle a reading ! or sewing group, by completely dre Iging their persons and clothes with dust, aud mingling it with the air they aausl breathe the remainder of the evening, while with a hand-brnsh and dust-pan, the oUending particles on the floor cuid have been speedily and neatly removed, without disturbing any one.
