What, or who defeated Gen. Scout
The newspapers generally engaged ia a discussion of the cause of Gen. Scott's .lefeat ia the Presniential eor-u-st. Some say the campaign ended disAstnuiy in consequence of the Baltimore platform giving way, by which a portion of the Whig army was cut off from the main body. Others say that dissatisfaction in the ranks of the old veteran corps, under Gen. Fil.nvre. who had i prospects of a full share of the spoils in the event of a victory, was themain cause of defeat. Others, ftmiin, attribute the rout to the early defection of several heavy artillery corps, attached to the Webster colnmn; w hile a few combine all these causes as famishing a vn i i iry lution of the question in debate. The most general opinion, however, is, that Gn. i Scott was fairly overpowered by number. He went into the contest, after several months f recruiting, Iriltna marshalling, with very inferior forces I He, aa well a. hi ergeants and corporals, were most I iiii.oneceiful in tin ii recruiting excursions. Corporal I I tiled and drummed throngh several states invain. A low will gather to be aroused by the music, but n.'t one would stick the Scott and Graham "ribbon'' in bia r ip. Sergeant Greeley gathered some crowds to listen to his gl.iwing accounts of " tbo service," but he firmed lew to fake " the shilling.'' Even from aeiong the ihemaadi win listened to the tune of ' the rich brogue, tad the air of " the foreign accent," with variations not a single volunteer company could bo raised. Thus the battle had to be fought without the expect I rc-inlnrcenv-nt, against an enemy firmly united, on victory, and strengthened by hosts of voluntees ad thousands of deserters Terrible, indeed wa .'be !. ! a. and its moral intitt not he lost upon our poiitio.il warriors. Tho people will only rally under a thoroughly imi(;al standard. They will fight for the glory and honor of their country, but not for a man. or for uncongenial principles, ia future, we expect " Yankee Doodle" and ' Hail Columbia" will be the favorite airs of recruiting parties.
