INDIANA STATE SENTINEL.
A JÜorr with a Moral. , , There lived once in the thy of Cairo. a wniow lady, nsmed Fetooaiai.. who had an otttj tea Hum, dutinmished amoo the youth of aw age for beauty and comeliness. Hu father, mho had been Shah Bandar ol the merchant!, had kft considerable property, so that there seemed no necessity for him to labor witk his bands or to trouble his mind with calculations and cares,' and the other attendants oa the seekers after wealth. He took delight in naught bat idleness. If ever he went to the bditaare, it was not to sell, but to purchase silks and brocades, or to meet with young reniuses like himself, with whom he planned excursions ?o the gardens. For some time his mother did not interfere with his way of life; bat one day, navkrg heard a sermon in a mosque, in which the delights of science were exalted, she called her son to her, and begged of him, in his leisure hours, to apply his mind to the mastery of some department of knowledge. Hassan wai MM by nature; and, as she spoke movingly, promised to comply with her wishes. On turning the mitter over in his thoughts, however, the young man found that what he hsd andei taken was more difficult than he had imagined. It is, indeed, not easy for one who has never made any greater iatellectual exertion than to estimate the valne of an amber mouthpiece, even to choose an object of stutfy among the various branches of science. Should be become a philosopher, a theologian, a moralist, or an aitroloer? H.- debated the matter for a long time; but would, probably, never havo arrived at any conclusion, had he not remembered a certain Sn-ikh Jlustala, a wise but easy, going old gentlem iir, who used occasionally to jam roe an teaMgraces in parties of pleasure, for the sake, he said, of enlarging his knowledge of manners, and his experience of the world. Hassan went to this Sheikh and stated his case. 'The matter is easy," q'ioili th" old gentleman. " Lady Fatoo mall save thee the option of choosing amongst all arts and sc:rn-". Let me recommend thee to study the art of love." At this the voting man laughed, saying thai he was most wilün " Rut where.' he. cried, " shall I find a master?'' Tlie Sheikh modestly bent his eyes to the ground: ' Behold an unworthy professor." Hassan readilv agreed to take lessons; and made a handsome pnymei " i -t.lvance tn the Sheikh, who said to him ; ''Receive my firt insti actions with a willing ear. Go forth into the streets, where ihere are not many peopie, and walk slowly alonjj with thy nose on a level with thv evebrows, as if iliow wert watching the swallows flying about their rests. Thou canst not fail in this way to catch & glimpse of some beautiful young maiden, rii . wili b- struck by thy bold and idle demeanor. She will probably wink at thee. In that case mark the house, and come to me for a second lesson." Hassan thought that this m de of studying was most excellent, and, accordingly , went forth and spent that day and the next wandering about the streets. He saw minv swallow, ran against several old men . knocked a lady off a donkey, and got a stiff neck; bnt no beautiful maiden wiukcii at him. " Wallah!" muttered he; as he set out the third day, " these studies arc less pleasant than I imagined. Unleae good ibrtu-te come to-day, I shal1 put myself in the hands of a professor of theology." He came about noon near the lake of the Elephant, and being tired, sat down upon a bench to rest, opposite a small but hnudsoaie house. Whilst he sat, a window opposite opened, and a face of marvellous beauty apoeired. The shift of love at once transfixed him, as the skewer of tho Kabob seller transfixes his pellets of meat; nnl i.e icuiaiaed gazing like on ; just awakened from sleep, nntil the la.ly, who was of extreme youth, uddenlv taking not cc of him, frowned a blick frownr tnd efoned her lattice with a slam. It was as if the sun had shot from the meridian right down to the west, and caused niotu to succeed at t-uce to garish day. Hassan's heart shrank, and his face darkened. He remained some time waiting to see if his lady would re-appear, hut as no sign of her aain was visible, he thought it best to repair to tuo house of the Sbjekh Mustafa, and ask his advice. ' This is the second lesson," quoth tho master of love, holding out his hand for a supplementary fee, which he knew would be now freely given. ' Return to the same place at the same hour to-irnrrow, and seat thyself on the ben -b. Be sure that t he lady observed thee well, otherwise she would not have downed. She will probablv look at thee through tho blind - but if tli u per severes!, in a day or two she will show her face again, as if by accident." Hassan complied; and the prophecy of Mustafa j proved true. On the third day, the young girl showed herself, bot after a little while, seeming to notice the' young man for the first tune, she frowned again, and j again closed the lattice with violence. He veutuied to hold up his ha: in a supplicating way, but there was answer from the house. Every window nsaaiatd motionless, anil ins Keen glances coum not discover whether any one was looking at him from within. The young man hud entered upon this adventure in a mere spirit of fun. He now found that his Irappiness was at st.ik ; and began to repent of having quibbled on the pronisM given by Lim to his mother, the Lady Faioomah; There seemed no chance, even with the assistance of bis wise master, that he could ever possess the lovaiy uiaiib-n who had charmed his sight; and yet, without her. km would be miserable, and death a hleing. He pictured to himself the desolation of one who is separat"'! fqt ever from the object of his love; and the t-ars i -gun to course down his checks. He seemed awakened for the firt time to consciousness of I the reality of eatstenee; und as ire savoured its bitter- I sweet taste, "looked bank with regret to the dream of J idiom-si in which he bad so long floated. He wot slowly and aadly to th' house of the professor, wh ru he I "imd smoking hi j'ipe. and drinking , somi'tliin which be called sLerb t. Hassan .li.i ns lie w.ts d sired; and Hie dellalah, on the following day, penetrnted into the house of the voung lady, who was living alone with seveial female slaves, Lui a- iurowu mistrust. Her name was Amneh; and her stature v. as elegant as her face was beautiful. She lo k-d over the basket of knie-k-knacks, and said: "Thess things arc prerty ; but I hive not at present money to purchase them." "Tru-v ar,- all paid for. , l.idy ; take ihem," said the dellalah. ''What is the meaning of this?" exclaimed Amneh, who, in realiiv peihaps, Mrolersiood what was coming. The old woman baii siiivrliing. and told her preoared storf , as how Hassan was the most charmicg moat wealthy, and most unhappy of the youths of Cairo; that siace he had seen her, he had been consumed by the love of her; and that if he was not admitted to an interview, he woold surely perish. When she had oooeladed, Amnob, who hail listened very attentively, started up, crying ''O, ill-omened hag? 0, digraee to old women! Is it tor this purpose thou hast t ome hither? May Aliah make thy heart a nest of vipers! 0, Zarah, O, Zarifeh, O, Fatroeh, come hither!" So saying, she clapped her hands, and her sei vants came ; and nt her co.nmand. they took the slippers of the dellalah, and bear her therewith, nnlil she cried for mercy, whilst the) laughed and enjoyed the j -ke. When they were tirej, tbey lurood ber oat, throwing her basket after her, and crying. "This is the reward of the women wh undertake to eoi rap' virtuous maidens!" Whereupon Kassau departed, and flew rather than walked, to the street where bia beloeetf dwelt. He had scarcely taken two (urns before a little slave-girl came and touched him, crying, "0, young master, wilt thou follow met ' I follow,1 ba replied; and presently he found himself in the presence of his lady, who ml blushing on her divan, and daretowt raise her eyes to look at him. He ikewise remaiaml entranced by her loveliness; and thus for some time jfcere was no sound in that room but the beating of two young hearts. At length, however, Hassan drew f ittlc nearer, and in a soft voice began to tell of his lovdfl She listened without moving; but when he ceased to tlHak, she raised her two large eyes to his, and the minglieg of their lances was the only pledge they exchanged. At that moment there was a knocking at the door; and Zarah ran into say that Aroneh's father was without. The young girl, who was just holding forth her hand to her lover, became pale as tho sister of death, and dropped upon the divan. Hassan stood rooted to the ground. The knocking was repealed, and louder. Zarah, the slave girl, at length spoke, "It is impossible that the young man can escape," qnoth she, "hut we can hide Eira ; he is very slim. Let him He behind the cushions of the divan until our master depart." So they hid him; and the master of the honse came in com plaining that they had detained him so long waiting. He seemed much excited; and a hen he sat upon the divan, kept moving to and fro, pnshing the cushions, so that Hassan feared that to escape discovery was impossible. However, fate had so ordered it, that when evening came tho father left the room for a moment ; and Zarah took the young man by the hand and led him forth, whispering. ' To morrow at mid day." Hassan coold not reconcile this adventure with the account of the dellalah. who said that Amneh lived alone. Perhaps all this was some plot to make a fool of him. And yet when he remembered the lovely ingenuous countenance of Amneh, this did not seem probasjle. He resolved to go the next day, and once more take the advice of Mustafa before returning to the rendezvous. "What is the name of the lauy?" inquired the Master of Love, when he had listened attentively to the story. "Amneh." The old man gnashed his teeth, and looked as if he would have killed Hassan; bnt he dared not to speak his thoughts. Thou hadst better abandon this adventure." said he; "there is much danger in it; and what will Lady Fatoomah think of me if thou comest to harm?" ,:Nay," replied Hassan; "this is advice which was fitting to give at first. Now it is too late. Thou we.t wiser yesterday than to-day. I shall go tn the house of Amneh. and take her in my arms, and lauuh at her foolish father, who leaned his back against me for three hours, and never discovertd me. Here is more gold." The Master of Love did not take the gold, but allowed his pupil to depart without saving a word. Then he rolled upon the divan, tearing his beard, and slapping his face, and crying: "O accursed wretch! In pleasantry didst thou plan i to ruin the peace of other families, arid now thou hast ! brought disgrace on thine own ; and the price of thy daughters reputation has been offered thee." Then he rose and called for his mule, and rode hastily to the house of the Lady Fatoomah, who. when she had heard his story, rebuked him and cried, "This is a jnst punishment lor such as latl youth astray. However, j thy daughter is said to be the most beautiful maiden of her age; and though thou hast kept her in a house apart, and hast endeavoured to conceal her from the eyes even of women, her reputation is great in the city. Let her become the wife of my son." Then she called her gro m, and ordered him to saddle her white ass; and when they had saddled it. she rode behind Sheikh Mustafa at a decent distance. They arrived at the house a little after mid-day. Hassan was already theie, murmuring his love in the ears of the delighted Amneh. It may be suppposcd that this invasion of the parents created some alarm ; but it was soon soothed down, and when matters were arranged, Mustafa took the first opportunity to look wise, and to say to Hassan: "There are few so learned in the art of love as I am, but never again will I seek to teach it."
