A frost is reported in lower Mississippi, which nipped the cotton. ETIt will be recollected that one of the excuses con- ; jured up by Tom Ewing 8t Co. for the removal of General Joseph Lane as Governor of Oregon was that he hml not lieen prompt in his repoits io Washington. There was not a word of truth in the charge. But it is true that the department at Washington made no communication to the Governor during the eighteen months that he was on duty in that far remote region of the Republic. Yes, we forget, they did send him two cominuni .ations one was to inform him that an error had been found in his accounts whilst he was General in Mexico to the amount of tve dollars cash- He had paid out the sum for some puriiose which he was informed could not be allowed; and he was directed to pay over five dollars and no CERTS to some official in Oregon a duty win. Ii the Governor promptly performed, taking a receipt for the same. Another communication informed him tl at the department at Washington had no further use for his services. The latter communication was in order, and became a party that was particularly opposed Jo proscription for opinion's sake. But tnat five dollars and no cents cash, is a matter of more gravity, requiring a dispatch all the way to Oregon. It ought to be inquired into. Which of the Galphins got the money? LouürilU De tnocrat. Col. Jefferson Davis. Wc find by the Mississippian of the 9th ult., that the distinguished soldier and patriot win, so name heads this notice, has consented to lie the States Rights Candidate for -Governor of Mississippi. We regret this. He cannot lie elected, and his friends should not have required him to sacrifice himself lor an impracticable object. We had a very high opinion of Gen. Quitman, and yet with the views upon which it was understood he was running, our wishes were for the success of his competitor, for whom we care nothing, personally. So it is with Colonel Davis. The States ! Rights party of that State started arong. We know they have abandoned the most of their ultra positions; we know that they do not now advance any views cal- I ciliated to encourage secession. But at first they did have such an object in view, and their organs were tierce and denunciatory. Tbey cannot now recover the i ground they lost by their false position, and it i9 suicidal to sacrifice suck a mau as Col. JetT. Davis for a mere pretence in keeping up their false organization.; They ought to know that under the circumsta uces be cannot be elected. Kentucky Yeoman. Explosion of the James J ackson. From a passenger who landed here on Monday we learn the steamer James Jackson, blew up about one mile lielow Shawneetown on Sunday morning last about, II o'clock. She was crowded with passengers, some thirty or forty of whom were either killed or badly wounded. We have a partial list of the sufferers, most of aMiom were from Louisiana. All the officers of the boat escaped unharmed except the pilots, who were slightly wounded. The boilers were torn to pieces and the boat is literally a a-reclt. The cause of the explosion is attributed to the force pump being out of order and consequently unable to supply the boilers with a sufficiency of water a fact made known by tbe engineer, to the captain, yet who, in despite of the imminent danger, ordered the boat to be pushed out from the wharf at Shaa'neetown. We learn that the boilers became red hot and that the engiMt seeing an explosion inevitable hastily retired to the stern of the boat, not having even a sullieiency of time to give the alarm. As this horrible destruction ol lite is no doubt attributed to the stubborness of tbe captain and the carelessness of the officers in charge of the boat, we are in hoes a thorough investigation into tbe matter may e made that those really guilty may be properly ! -Li as, ir - j j puiiisueu Mt.
