Cultivating Orchards.
For a few years past, about eighty thousand dollars worth of fruit trees have been anuually set oul in oichards in the siujilo Slate of New York. It these were all treated in the best manner, in preparing the ground, in carefully transplanting, und in good care and cultivation uiicrwurds, each year's planting would probably be worth to the owners in ten years, not less than three millions of dollars, to far as their value may b measured by a sum of money. The question aris.s, what propoitionof ihis great number of trees aie actually advancing with full promise of what they niijjlit attaint What portion will really become in ten years, by the
best treatment. fulUsiztJ, healthy, and pioducMvcf Several intelligent indiv i.lu.ils have iven it as their opinion that Mat one-lnil ' of tho trees that arc set out ever survive the third vcar. A very large numner are certainly 1 at by careless removal, hasty transplanting into hard ground, and total subsequent neglect. But ol those wasch survive, there aie undoubtedly not one-tenth, than make half the growth they would ai'ian Mater good management. We baf seen whole orchards ol young peaeh trees smothered to death the first summer by the heavy growth of meadow grass which nearly envclop.d them. A Eur larger numlter, however, are those which are not killed outright, but which linger year after year with a slow and leeblo growth. Nov this tardiness is altogether unnecessary. Peach s far north as forty-three degrees, liave been ina-ie to yield the third summer from transplanting, three pecks uf peaches, and apple trees the tilth si. miner, one l.nshel each. ''But we caun.it affird to give so much nttention to our trees the rich man only can do this," s ys the tailoring farmer. What! not allot d lo be economic. I ? It is, howpver, a great mistake 10 suppose that I much expense is needed. Em idling the land is largely 1 paid for by the heavy crops of potato) , carrots, rutabaI grs which grow between the rovs when tho trees are ' small, and by the equally heavy and more valuable loads j of ripe fruit profusely yielded afterwards. The expense 1 of ploughing once a year and harrowing four limes, is ' perhaps nut half ihe first cost of t he orchard, to say ! nothing of ihe annual crops atiorded ; while it soon rentiers it itiadrup.' the value of the Roitlocicd ptaatojioa, j Why do not our farmers apply t!.c same wit and wisdom to the management of their orchards that thev d to 1 their corn and clover crops? Why should they not, when Otany, who fortunately, have already full grown
orchards, get more in mmneil value I10111 them Hum irom all their farms besides? Tho difficulty is rendered greater in most cases by the very inconvenient machinery used for ploughing near tho rows. A loio drawn with a two hiHrse team, with double whiUlo trees, cannot safely approach nearer than three feet to a tree, and everv plonohnian dreads a task ohich is coinmonlv attended with mutilated bark OO one hand, and wide grassy "balks" 00 ihe other. A great improvement is made by placing one horse ahead of the other, with short single whiffle trees, especially if the nSnsatffhl traces of ihe hinder horse are considerably lenot'iened to allow running to rioht or left. A wide error is committed in cultivating orchards by thone who fur an i I halt nx.ts exteivl far In'Vond the etTtde tea vared by the hrhoeheo. The whole surface of ihe ground is covered fy the net-vvoik of the roots, where full L'iown trees stand twenty feet npart. The htfftei and more obvious roots, it is tine, are near the I. use ol tho fraah ; but all the finer ons, which so largely contribute nourishment, are spread nt great distances. Hence all orchards which have made, some veiirs ol growth, hould have the wlmle Bar htre cultivated and kct t mellow, and not narrow strips or small circles just at the foot of the trees Alba iy Cultiia'.or.

It the ground i covered with any CfgO table matter, Mich as w heal or out stubble, or with a growth of summer grans, (whieli laut is very abundant ibis season.) the proper mode is to plow thoroaghty from S to ID inches deep. The in ie stuff you havo to plow under the deeper you ought to plow. Lei the vegetable matter be turned under in the most perfect manner, which can be done by having a chain properly attached to the plow ; let the furrow slice bo turned ove. and into the previous furrow, so thnt no HrHon of ihe vegetable matter can lie seen at the surface bctwe-n ihe furrows. It will lie an advatitige to pas a light full toothed harrow over the plowed ground as soon after plowing as convenient, by which the moisture will be retained, and the fermentation promoted, which will produce a most perlct tilth. By this mode the farmer converts the vegetable matter that was on the ground into a coat of manure; for if well done, and in proper lime, the fermentation will kill not only ihe straw of the sninmer grosi, but nlso the seeds nnd roofs. And once plowing in auch 2 round, and in the manner above slated , is better than oftener, if the weather should besuch that the surface shall become somewhat, crusted, it can be moat ell -eti ally oosend by passing a light sharp cultivalor over ihe gronnd liefore seeding.
