New York State Agricultural Fair. Correspondence of the New York Journal of Commerce. Hochesteb, Sept. 16, 1851. The day of jubilee has come, the annual exhibition of the progress and improvement, during the past year, in Agriculture, Horticulture, Manufactures, Mechanics, and Ihe Fine Art, williin the Empire, and some of her highly favored sister States. Tin- may justly be called the World's Fair of tho New World, as here, in one incongruous mass, are assembled worthy Dutchmen fiom the valley of the Mohawk, hardy sons of Western New York, the most enterprising Canadians. Suckers and
Badgers from the far-oti" regions of Prairie Land; with I such an array of cattle, products of the farm and dairy, machines, and implements of all descriptions, as would j have tilled honest John Bull with inexpressible wonder, ; and called forth a tribute of acclamation for the enterprise and ingenuity of this Universal Yankee Nation. This morning I visited the ground selected and inclo- I sed for the fair. It is one and a half miles South of Ro1 euestcr, in a high and romantic situation, overlooking . i i i - s a : . i - l i mc nppiing water oi tue river, anu uic spires auu uomes of the City of the Genesee." The land, formerly extremely uneven, has been leveled ; and a number of wells sunk lor the accommodation ; id refreshment of man and beast. Among the most prominent and note worthy Halls erected, are Manulaeiuies, Mechanics, and Floral; all taeming with articles both ornamental and substantial. This is a proud day for industry and talent; for thousands have met here to witness and do honor to them. The order of Public Exercise is as follows: The grounds will be open for inspection on Wednesday. On Thursday is the review of the Rochester Battalion, by Gov. Hunt, assisted by Gens. Scott and Wool, the warworn veterans of Londy'a Lane, Buena Vista and Vera Cruz. On Friday will be the award of premiums, and the address of Senator Doi.glass, the little giant of Western Democracy, which will doubtless reflect eredit upon its author, and lustre on the occasion of its delivery. The streets are rilled with carriages running t and from the fair. The influx of human and animal life has, however, but commenced. Credit is due to the President of the Society and the Executive Committee, for their efficiency and public spirit. All in and around the groum'.ri is conduct 'ii with an order truly admirable. Of amusements we have no lack. Barnum will reap a golden harvest. Madam Bishop sings this evening in Corinthian Hall; and while writing this. I hear the enchanting melodies of that far-famed English songstress. W. M. H. Roi Hester, Sept. 17, 1851. The long-expected, much-dreaded rub and jam commenced this morning at nn earlv hour. The streets are literally lined with carriages, omnibuses, and other vehicles, moving to and from the lair; and woe to the un lucky pedestrian who is mingled with. .inl enlanglnd among litem. The Fair ground- resemble, in same respects, an ex'en-ive Military encampment. The Star Spangled Banner waves in the breeze, and the busy hum of many voices mingling with soul-inspiring martial music, and the sweet chiming of t lie ImMIs; renders the scene animating its impression lasting. Although we sec here to-day no gracious Queen and proud Nobility, condescending to witness the progress of lalior nn-l the triumph of industry, yet there are men here who may justly be called Nature's Noblemen, with such an array of Machines. Engines, Reapers, Cultivators, Plows, Harrows, Drills, Horses, Cows, Sheep, P-Miltry, Swine, Paintings, Portraits, Musical Instru ments. Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers, as never before was witnessed in America. The show of catile. whose sleek sides denote full feeding and high breeding, is particularly tine, and is attracting t'ic gaze and admirutmn of the assembled thousands. This is, indeed, a proud day for all those direct'.v interested in the improvement ol stock Outsi'le of the enclosure arc numberless tents and iiooths. filled with eatables and drinkables. Here, also, arc "sights," from Barnutn's Caravan to a Striped Pig show. The weather is cool, and after the late hot weather is cxtremelv soul-reviving. Among the distinguished men in town are Horace Greeley, Lord Elgin and Gen. Webb. Corinthian Hall is now being decorated for the approaching State Fair Festival. The President and Cabinet, Lord F.lgin, Governor Hunt, Senator Seward and Jenny Lind, having received invitations, have signified their intention of being present. This will crown the festivity during the week, nnd prove a gala day. To-day the Union Races commence, and will attract a large concourse of sporting characters. 1 W. M. H. Rochester, Sopt, IS, 1S51 . This is the great nnd notable day of tho Fair. No one can return from it, without more enlarged and comprehensive views of the resources and glory of N:w York, and of some of her sister Slates. The influence exerted here on the minds of the million, will tell on the prosperity and destiny of America. The sun rose this mornino with unusual splendor, and tho weather continued propitious and exhilirating. Such clouds of dust were never seen before raised in Roches ter or vicinity. The articles for exhibition in manufacture! s Hall are well arranged, and attracted the :iilinirino gaze of thou- . samt. Such a display of costly fabrics, shawls, silks, i chandeliers, cut aud stained glass, miniatures, embroideries, and fancy articles of every description, has seldom been seen. Near this Hall is the tent allotted lr tlip especial accommodation of the Press, and the tent i f Hon. John Delafiekt, the President of the Sci'tv. Passing on, we come to Floral Hall, which is tilled with the choicest products of the orchard, vineyard, and llower-garden, nieelv arranged with a discriminating regard to show and elleet. Of flowers of the ni"st gor geous hues there is a pleasing variety. The central design is uniipte, and looks natural and rural. A gnarled oak rises above a pvramid of rocks, and on its branches are many baskets of fruit, while the highest part of it is surmounted by a sheaf of grain. Outside of ibis, against the walls of the tent, and r"aching around the circuit, are tables laden with fruit that would cause tho veriest epicure to rejoice. Surrounding the halls, nr.d midway let ween them, is a myriad of machines, reapers, corn shellcrs, strawcutters, stoves, (among which is the one thnt caused the , ... ... . V great excitement at Loudon during the World s t air.; churns, plows, drills, nnd miniature engines, which arrest the attention of all, whether competent to understand and appreciate them or not. In Dairy Hall, the display of wheat, butter, cheese, 8te., is not as large ns on former occasions. The large armv of improved stock constitute one of the most interesting and important sights on the oround. I noticed a numlrer of heavy Dnrhmns, of unmistakable good qualities, and of Devons the finest collection in the State. Among others worthy of more than a mere passing notice, there was a Canadian Bull, pronounced by cominon eo sent, to be the most superb animal on the .Mounds But should 1 enter into details, it would stretch this sketch rd infinitum. The horse has many noble representatives bswVj "d a number are now disporting in the ctreusses A number of locomotive engines are putTiing, and ever nnd anon are heard the shrill notes of the steam whistle. The display of poultry atlacts the attention of all who are fond of chicken fixins." The Union race course is thronged with lovers of fun, and several fast nnos are entered for the race of to-day. The Review will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock P. M. Amon the Lions now in town, I noticed Senators I)ouglas and Seward, Governors Hunt, Wripht. of Indiana, and Patterson; H"u. Win.
