ARRIVAL OF THE CHEROKEE! TIE HAI EXFEDITIBI IAS FAILED ! ! LOPEZ EXECUTED ! ! ! New YoftK, Sept. d, 12 M. The Cherokee has arrived. Passengers witnessed the execution of Lopez. They my he ended his life man'
fully. The total failure of the expedition is attrilmted to the delay from the separation of Col. Crittenden's command. The Patriots dispersed to the mountains, nly thirty remained with Lope. They left him without a single friend. He wandered until ran down by bloodhounds. His last words were " Adieu, dear Cuba!" Gen. Paraguay has been killed rt Page-as. The Spanish accounts say that the men in the Pampero 556 have already been killed; 436 imprisoned. Lopez declared himself deceived in regard to aid from Cuba. A meeting was held on board the Cherokee, Gen. Lane of Oregon, presiding. Resolutions were passed rJenouniri the American Consul at Havana, and de-
maadm" his recall Irr the Government. -aa 1'hiladelphia, Sept. 5. The Savannah papers contain d tails of the news received by the ship Merchant from Havana. Gen. Enna was killed in battle on the 17th at Caramhola. His lody was sent by Gen. Lopez, with a flag of trace, to the Spanish camp, the whole of the city of Havana being out at bis funeral on the 21st. The Havana hospitals are crowded with hundreds. The Spanish officers were dismay ! at the rapid and fatal til ing of the Amer-

From New York FURTHER CALIFORNIA NEWS BY THE PROMETHEUS, New York, Sept. 4. The steamer Independnce had arrived at San Juan on the 16tb of August from San Francisco. Indian hostilities have ceased on the southern and eastern borders,
but hare broken cut on the northern Ironlier. The hostile Indians on Rogue river have been dispersed, but not subdued.Business in 8an Francisco is brightening up, and the merchants, nothing daunted by the many (ires, are building so fast that the city has already assumed nearly its original appearance. The vig. lance committee has done its work so tbor ougbly that crime, in all its forms, has been greatly restrained. Agriculture in California is becoming a source of wealth to all who perseveringly follow it. The abundance with which the fields are laden is enough to encourage the most sceptical. Fairoersare laboring under great disadvantages in not knowing whether the commissioners will recognize their claims and make good (heir titles. This is keeping many from going forward with improvements which they contemplate. The miners on Mississippi Bar are principally engaged in carting dirt from higher table lands to the river, and there washing it, which pays fair profits. On North
fork, a United states company has nearly completed a cutting one-fourth of a mile in length and twenty feet deep, which is to divert the entire river from its natural channel. At Mormon Island a continuous race has been dug for a mile at a cost of one hundred thousand dollars. At Ngro Bar the river has teen turned for one mile and its bed left dry. Another steamer has been completed to run the river between the rapids.
Indianapolis and BellefontainR Railroad.
This road is eighty-three miles in length, extending from Indianapolis to Union, at the Ohio line ; seventy-six miles are straight lines ; no curve of less radius than five thousand seven hundred and thirty feet ; the maximum grade is thirty feet to the mile ; and the cost of
constiuction, up to the rolling power, with a T rail of sixty pounds to the yard, an oak continuous superstructure", and a gravel ballast, will not exceed ten thousand dollars to the mile, as fully tested by the completion of that part of the road now in use. Thirty-six miles of the road, from Indianapolis to Anderson, is run with daily trains, carrying the mail. Eighteen miles, from Anderson to Mancie, are now being laid with the heavy rail, to be completed the coming fail, and the balance of the line is progressing; rapidly with the graduation.
The iron is procured for the whole road; with tbe exception of twenty-five miles; and the Company are conndent of liavinc the whole line in use by the autumn of next year. This link in the great chain, as we hare often eaid, must be one of the best and most productive. Its local business must be heavy, while its through busi
ness will ultimately Wo immense. Connecting at Indiana p 'is with all the Railroads radiating from that point, and at the Ohio line with the Sandusky, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Dayton lines, it will possess great advantages of location lor through travel and business ; and considering its low grades, easy curves, and long straight lines, it may be brought up to almost any rate of speed ; while its light cost of construction must give it high rates of dividends, when it shall be completed and its connections formed. The Washington Telegraph says that arrangements have been made in the United States for landing five thousand men in Cuba, in a short time, under the command of distinguished leaders, adding that it could give all the details of the project, if politic. Just for the same reason that pupils from similar institution in Ohio and Kentucky visited our State previous to the founding of our benevolent institutions. Those exhibitions had much influence in preparing the public mind of Indiana for the establishment of those institutions which are now the boast of every citizen of the State, and we trust the visit of Mr. Brown and his pupils in Wisconsin and Michigan may exert a similar influence.
