What we didn't qnite expect. The Madison Courier seems to have been as much affected by the plaudits of the Abolition presses a by those of the Whig presses. The editor insists that Thompson, the notorious British Abolitionist, has a perfect right to go over the Union and recoir-mcnd a noncompliance with the laws of Congress, abuse, stigmatise and libel our institutions, and endeavor to stir up among our people sedition and civil war, and that " all who have no fear of the truth, and arc not themselves the slaves of eiror and of power, will vindicate bis right thus to give his opinions full utterance." That, be it remembered, is claimed for a rann, who is a sworn subject of our ancient foe, who owes allegiance to a foreign power, and who has no. hing in this country to he effected by ,he excessive outrages and horrors 01 civil commotion, which he has been trying tobring about. Were he a citizen of this Union, to be affected for weal or for woe Oy its internal policy., some apology might be offe ed for his conduct; but, as he is a stranger, is not a citizen, and does not intend to become one, and cannot be affected in his family and personal relations bv a civil war

Frnit in Oregon. Milton Shannon, son of William Shannon, formerly of Henry county, in this State writes. Fruit troes do well here. They have finer peach orchards here than I ever saw in any other country they bear in three years from the stone. Apple trees, I think, do as well here as any where else in the world. Gene -- al McCarver has tue finest apple and (reach orchard I ever saw. I believe. They weie all in bloom when I arrived here. I thought it was the handsomest sight in the shape of an orchard that I ever saw. I took dinner at his house and eat apples that he had raised last year.
Hemffield Railroad . The sum of 50,000, has been subscribed in Washington, Pa. , towards the completion of the Hempfield Railroad.
From Now Mexico. The latest intelligence from New Mexic) we find in the following extract of a letter, dated Independenck, July 22, 151. The Santa Fe mail has again reached! our pluce under charge of Mr. Williams, some days before the contract time. It brings but littlo news of interest. Amongst those who had reached Santa Fe from the States, I notice the names of Messervy, Beck, Judges Mowers, and Watt. Business prospects were rather flattering to the early traders, but to those coming in last, a season of dullness unprecedented except iu 184S like that
year, though,. liCfore its expiration, other avenues for trade may be opened up, utilooked for, which will consume tho greater portion of the merchandise that enters left the Territory. From points below, none otner than a quarter master's mail had arrived. The citizens of the Rio Abaja complain bitterly abafJt their mail facilities and arc urgent to have a correspondent mail, at least, with the one from the bates. The Legislature was in session, but little doinir. Much excitement has existed amongst the Pueblo Indians, on account of certain expressions of the Governor iu bis inessnge, and udvantage has been taken cl it by the Reynolds pany. which has caused no little trouble, and may take aoi.te lime to tpuict effectually. The artillery which was in SaiiLa Fe has been ordered to Taos. Unless greater care is taken by the ollicials in the Territory, trouble will sprinu up, endungerinu the lives and property of
manv valuable citizens. Much is expected of Col. Sumner, if he is as efficient as anticipated, peace and contentment will again prevail. A i saiail man bv the name of Mullignn. a clerk of
Dodge, of Cibollita, while passsing from tl at town to Albuquerque was attacked by eight Navapcs, and badly wounded, but escaped with his life. F r Navajocs (Indians) induced to come into Cibollila, were set iiou by a party of Mexicans and three of the party murdered. A chief of these Indians was recently whipped in public by older of the officer in command at the same town. Tho troops. Col. Sumner's command, went up the BAit Fort route, instead of the Cimarone. Disease was yet with them, to some extent, so says the surgeon of the post, Mann's Fort. At this jpost the cholera has broken out, and from one to three ol the soldiers are dying daily. While the mail men were there two soldiers were buried. The mail was attacked by a party of forty or fifty Indians, only four of whom showed themselves at the Narrows, a little this side of the place where While's party were killed they retreated back three miles to Beck's train of wagons, previous to which, however, they made Igte with them and killed one. After this skirmish they had no M trouble. Judge Mowers takes the Southern Circuit. Judge Watt the Northern, and Judge Baker remains a: Santa Fe. " So Dies a Wave alokc the Shore." A Government train of Poitowatomie Indians frm Michigan passed through our streets on Monday. They are the remnant of the tribs on their way to new hunting grounds at the far Northwest. So tfiey pass away. There is something mournful in the sight the last of that prond and powerful race, broken in spirit and corrupt in blood, passing from shore to shore, toward the last remaining acres of their inheritance by the setting sioi. Homestead exemption is not for the, n Kenosha Dem.
