It is well known that the imports of 1849-50 were unusually liht ; and yet the imports this season, as above compared, show an increase of only 65-1.457 baos. Now, except the consumption of CoflTee has decreased, ami the trade at this port would show the reverse, the stock in this country must now he exceedingly light. By the last news from Ensland, Brazil Coflee, we find, was worth 40s pr cwt. afloat at London; and as there is no duty on Coffee imported into this country, in American ships, from the place of growth, importers possesi the same advantage with their stock afloat at London, aS they do ashore in the United States. Forty shillinos sterling per cwt. is equal to about 9c per Ib., so that it may be seen that tho article has now come lo a point in our seaport towns, full as low as it is

At Baltimore the imports have been very heavy, being
vouring their contents. He never enjoyed the benefit of:
collegiate or even academical instruction. Unaided and destitute of means be commenced his career in life, when onlv about sixteen years of age. He even studied law by himself: yet we doubt if, in the whole list of eminent men in Indiana, one can be found possessed of more extended and varied information, professional, political and scholastic, than this self-taught, self educated man. He commenced his professional career in Indiana. His
talents and industry soon made him a leading member; I yet neither praise nor opposition diverted him from his onward course. Steadily resisting all solicitations to , embark in political life, he persisted in his purpose of laying the foundation of future advance in that profess- ,
ional proficienev which should form a secure resource under all circumstances. Not until he had become eminent at the bar, did he consent to become an applicant for public office. He served for six continuous years in the Senate of Indiana, where his industry and ability soon made him conspicuous. Many of our most important laws, brought forward by him, have remained unchanged upon our statute-books for fifteen or twenty years. He was appointed Commissioner of the General Land Office by General Jackson, near the close of his administration; and. ns we have understood, without his own solicitation or knowl. dge. tration of that oifice is fresh in the recollection of our
readers. It suffices to say, that he found the State bankrupt and suffering under tbe odium of a '''silent repudiation," tVi . he left it with restored credit and vindicated honor, rapidly advancing in the career of prosperity. We now find him representing this, the fifth State in the confederacy; and acknowledged by holding a hi?h rank among those distinguished statesmen who compose the United States Senate. We trust that his improving health will warrant him in taking that more prominent p-.it in the legislation of the country for which his abilities are adapted. Such a career is full of encouragement to the young and aspiring. There is not a youth in thc lnd, however humble bis condition or limited his means, who mav not derive ample encouragement from the example of one who, under like discouragements, had tbe heart and the will to carve out for himself a path to distinction.
