Rev. ... . 7 , i o i AIT. breen, a colored preacher, knew him in September of 184. Afttr the testimony was taken, and the case fully argued, the judge remanded the prisoner, and he was hand-called and placed in custody of Mr. Rust, agent for the owner. A great deal of feeling was manifested, hut no signs of disorder. From the Terre Haute Journal J The next Congressional Election. " Who will be the democratic candidate for Congress in this district?" is a question that has been frequently propounded to us recently, and one which has become a topic oi conversation among many ol our democratic friends. We are not advised sufficiently on the subject to express, with any degree of certainty, whether a ; convention will be held, or that a candidate will be i placed upon the track bv commen consent. We care 1 - i ' , . , f -,.. , i not who the candidate may be, so he is good, laithTul, ( nnd true to the constitution and laws- Momentous ques- ! tion may arise, in the next Congress, in opposition to the compromise measures of the session before the last.. ! ii tue itujuMiuciu oi ine sia ei v iiiicaiiuii. iuu hubstion which has already shaken the government to its centre, roblicd the country of peace and the treasury ol J its funds after the most severe struggle, and the exer- , t inn tt tliA I .... i A1An. ,.i" id .,,.! ... iw.ru ! All other considerations were laid aside for the moment, and patriots of the two great leading parties, ru-heo torth lor the salvation ol the country. Matten were . 1 a a . 's settled which, apparently, were satisfactory to north and south. The hres of rehcllion were not smothered, thev soon sousht a pretext and beuan araiu to burn. Hydra-headed nullification began to roar, because it could not usurp all authority and become dictator. J Abolitionism, bent upon destruction, nerved with more sympathy for the African than for the peace and ha;-pi-ness of the Amarican. under British intluence, licgan to throw their missiles Irom behind the old Federal battery of the north, aggrieved at the embargo laid upon their trade of decoying and pilfering th property and aggravating the south. The disorganizes of every part arc ' raising the hue and cry. Some in opposition to the entire peace measures- others, a little mor cautious, assail a part, the fugitive slave law, well knowing that if they can raise steam enough on this point, in their estim iti in the most available, it may endanger the whole, and bring aliout another slavery agitation to convulse the Union. To pick a flaw in a man's character, would not it aflect the whole man? so, to make war upon one sec- ' Don of an enactment endangers the whole. You cannot get out of it, and here stand the disorganizes, disrobed of disguise ! Their banner is hoisted with the motto inscrilcd, war upon the south to the kn fe, let the consequences be as disastrous as the niav. The south say, all we ask of you is, to let our institutions, our property alone lot us enjoy our rights, guarantied by the Constitution, or if not, we will secede ! Here is the position of the two political parties on the subject of slavery. The question now presents itself to every voter, and calls for action: Shall we aid the abolitionists in opposing the laws of the country, or shall we set our faces ag tinst any further agitation of the slavery question nnd abide by the compromise? Let the decision be with the people. The democracy of this district will be called upon shortly to make a selection of a candidate for Congress. Str've to select one of the rijjlit material free from the least taint of aholitioiSm. One opposed to slavery riSi- ' tation. and who will pledge himself to abide by the compromises of the constitution. If such a democrat is nominated we have every reason to think he can succeed. A Free Fight. A general melee took place yesterday morning about 11 o'clock, on the guards of tl.o Keystone State. The ombatants were some de.'-k passengers on that boat and a portion of the crew. The quarrel originated about a do2. in the p issession of a passenger, and which it was ehargatl hail Leen stolen from the watchman of the 1 steamer. The fight soon became general, and at length some ten or fifteen infuriated men engaged in a mortal ! str:ii2le. Some seized iron spikes, others sticks of wood, j and one a large chain, all of which were wielded with 1 terrible effect. Neil her friend nor foe were spared in the ; firht. In a few moments a pile of the wounded was 1 laid upon the guards, and the officers succeeded in separating the combatants. One man named John Gavin was severely and it is 1 thought mortally wounded from a lilow on the bead re- ' reived from a stick of wood. l)r. McFrecly pronounces 't him in a precarious condition. FV.nr of the parties were arrested ami brought before iho Mayor for examination -ypsterday afternoon. No eviden.-e l.cing adduced tiiat ither of the men had committed the particular assault, thev were held to bail for riot in the sum ol two hundred and fifty dollars each. Their farther examination will ; be held before the Mayor this afternoon at 3 o'clock. It is pretty well ascertained thst the man who dealt the probably fatal. llow. succeeded in making his es;ape i on the steamer. Cm. Gazette, 14th.
