BY MAGNETIC TELEGRAPH. From the Madisoa Papers. St. Loci, Sept. 2 8 p. m. Mr. Papin reached this city yesterday from Santa Fe, having leu on the 16tn u't. Ife confirms all th-j previous accounts concerning the deprcdali DS of the Indians and ihe iudlick'noy oi' the troops in chafing thcni. Cul. Morrioo, liy Iiis late activity, has mmle himself ti;e thenar of envi&o'le encomium, and, with the aJdnional force now on the way to New Mexico, it is thought he will render efficient service. Mr. Papin met Connelly's train at Cedar Springs. The day previous the Apaches had stolen from the train eirjuty-two head of mules. Tiie descent was so sudden, ami dexterously was the stolen property separated from ilio other animals, that not a word was exchanged nor a tin fired betweon the Indians and the herdstnpn before they were under full gallop to the mountains with the drores Wl'ore them. Col. Sumner was met encamped almut fonr miles from Fort Marin. He was with several companies awaiting the arrival of a company on detached service for provisions, preparatory to reaching the crossings of Arkansas. Mr. Papin met a company of infantry on their way to Santa Fe, all in pood health, on tue Little Arkansas. They came np to the encampment of Capt. Burford, in command of two or three companies of dragoons. Several of thrt office's werf vofc. hnf non dangerously. Brown's povernment train'was met at Lost Sprinp. A ae..o il ijovernnieui tram was met ihree miles from Carniel Grove. The same day Waldo & Co.'s mail carrier was met just starting for Santa Fe. AH the creeks between the States and Carniel Grove were dry, which was causing much sußerinj for the want of water loth in men atvl animals. A srreatmany animals were lost By a stranpe and unexjdainiilile disease called the dry murrain. The cattle cone-rally di 'd in an hour or two after leinr taken. The disease is supposed to originate from, drinking unwholesome water. Washington, S?pt. 27. fifa-TE. After some otdinary lnr.iiie-s was transacted, the I.idian appropriation bill was taken un.
Many amendments were oüered and agreed to, and the j Lull ordered to a third readinp. A message was received from the President with the correspondence between the United States Government and Turkey relative to Hungarian refujrcesi. The bill to ascertain and settle the validity of private land claims in California was taken up and debated. At 4 o'clock the Senate took a recess, to meet at 7 o'clock, when the California land bill passed. The be Mte then went into executive scsmoii. IIocsi. The H nse then went into committee at an early iiour on tl.e amendments of the Senate to the civil and diplomatic bill. Tue committee concurred in the appropriation of $10,000 for the expenses of the aent of the Sulilime Porte, to bd extended under the direction of the Secretary of State. The St-nate amendment appropriating $200,000 for additions to the Capitol wa rejected. Tlie committee, alter acting upon numerous Senate amendments, most of which were rejected, rose ami took a recess till 6 p. m. At the evening csion various amendments to t!:c bill were apreed to in committee aad roporlcd, when the House adjourned. Net York, Sent. 23, 8 P. M. The Pacific, in starting out of her dock, pitched the ! wheci-hous) against a larye wootl frame house or sued, ' erected over the pier, under which a large number of people had collected to see her otT. and the wliole : was thrown djwn with a tremembtus crash, faliin suddenly on the people, killing two or three outright ami wounding several others badly. A number are stül inj the ruins. Many eseap-d by runinj lr li:e. T'.e scene was indescribably horrific. The Pacific came into dock to render askance. The particulars have not all transpired. Pittsbcrc, Sept. 21, 8 P. M, Pittsburg was visited yesterday afternoon by one of the severest hail-storms that ever visited these parts. There is scarcely a house in Pittsburp and Alleghany Citv in which the windows are not a total wreck. The hail foil of an enormous size. Every roof suffered more or less. As an instance of the cllee-t of the storm, hail broke completely trouph in n roofs to the first floor. This may be hard to lielieve, but is nevertheless true. The amount of damage cannot be ascertained. Washington, Sept. 30, 8 p. ro. Tlie Foote ami Fremont difHculty has licet! ainiealilj ' settled. The latter addressed a note to the former, re qairins a retraction of the language used by him in debate, to be Mrjned in tho presence of witnesses, and a challenge note was left if lie refused to sirjn. Sir. Foote declined to tn the piper, but addressed a note in reply to Fremont's discluiiaiiiü any intention of riving anv personal offence in the language used bv him in the de- I bate. Friends ot both parties considered this satisfactory to Fremont, but, at his instance, the note of Foote was submitted to Col. Benton, who consented to tie arrangement. The objectionable remarks of Mr. Foote were substantially that the pl.in of the California Senator for the settlmnt of titles was a ereat outrage apon the public. Mr. Ritchie i- to be indemnified and tho printing contract I r ke up. A d -union address will appear in a day or two. It is now ready and is from the pen of Mr. Butler. The following are the Utah confirmations: Briham Youni, Governor, B. Davis Harris, of Vermont, Secretary of State. J tseph BdfTitrton, Chief Justice, W. W. Lewis, of Olli", associate Jastie, Seth Blair, of Utah, TT;tP,l SfafP, attorner. Jos. T. Tf artrnml. TTnirl State i . i J ; marshal Washixgtow, Sept. 33, 8 P. M. ' Sexati. The Senate met at 9 o'clock. Mr. Walker saiil tliat in ensrossin? tlie Imunty land bill an error was made anil not discovered till after the bill was approved y the President, which allowed war. rants for lands to le a5si;rned. An amendment had been made and agreed to by both houses prohibiting an assignment till after a patent had been issued. He produced a bill explanatory of and npplvins the error. Mr. Da wson objected. The error, he considered, was a fortunate one. Mr. Walker said objection wa mttra2iou. Mr. Dawson hoped that the Senator from Wisconsin woold not jet in a ra?e. He would withdraw hi objection, as he understood loth houses agreed to what was omitted; and the bill passed. Mr. Jefl. Divis submitted a resolution aothori7.inr the President to summon a military board to examine and report whether the crade of Lieut. General should lie I established in the army and what is necessary to prevent military officers from usurping and exercising civil function; agreed to. - The Sonate went into Executive session. The doors opened at 11$ o'clock, and a mese was received from the President approving the civil and diplomatic and additional appropriation bills. At five minates before 12 o'clock a committee was appointed to wait on the President, consisting of Messrs. Ewinr, Houston, and John Davis, who immediately reported. M'. Kins congratulated the Senate and the country on the events of the session, and pronounced the Senate adjourned. IIocse. The House met at 11 o'clock. Mr Gur!ey, the chaplain, in the course of prayer asked every blessing which God can b?stow upon the memiters, who are now about to retire home. Ti e House concurred in the Sonata resolutions to suspend the seventeenth joint rule, o that the civil and diplomatic appropriation and Indian appropriation bills could be presented to the President Tr signature. To-day several irentlemen wanted to take up particular bills, but the House refused to suspend the rules for that purpose, and much confusion ensued. A message was received lVotn tl.e President stating that he had tinned tho civil and diplomatic and Indian appropriation bills. Mr. Potter wished the committee of the whole on the täte of the Union to be discharged from the consideration of the cheap postage bill, and that it le made the special order for the third Monday in December next. At fifteen minutes of 12 o'clock, on motion of Mr. Bayly, a committee was appointed to wait on the President to ask whether he had any further communication to make. Efforts were made to take np the bill sopplementary to the soldier's bounty land bill, passed on Saturday. It appears that the enzros.ing clerk omitted three words of the patent, and this makes the warrant assignable, which was not intended. On motion to suspend the rules to take np the snpnlementiry bill, the yeas and nays were called. The Clerk was occupied thus aliout live minates, and was interrupted by Mr. Bayly, who rid that the committee had waited on the President, and that he informed thera he had no further cnmmunicafion to make to Congress. The Clerk resumed calling names. Mr. -ose to a qoestion of privilece. There were too many speculators, in land warrants on the floor, who had no i.osiness there. The door-keeper should enforce the rules. The Clerk resumed eallinj the roll, and got as far down as the Kin us. when the Speaker said - The hour fixed by joint resolution having arrived, I now declare that this House stands adjourned tine die. Immediately there was clapping of hands and other manifestations of joy. A few members lingered to converse with friends. Ci!c!N!Ti, Sept. 30, 8 p. m. The river is rising very slowlr. Several Ixvats are crronnd at Lawrencebiir?h. The Messenger, from Pittsburgh, has arrived at Portsmouth, but she will have fotTie difficulty in jrettinir down. Private depntches from Washington state that the
Senate amendments to the civil and diplomatic appropriation bill, appropriating $cU.CC0 for a cu.toin-tiuso at Cincinnati, and the same amount for one at St. Louis, were concurred in by the House. Boston, Sept. 30, 8 p. m. Jenny Lind rehearsed this morning betöre three hundred persons. She was much anroyed by the number present, and did not sing with much power.
