The Remmixgtox Bridge. A Bridge which is now beinj erected at Montgomery, Alabama, ban a span of four hundred feet, without piers or oilier intervening supporters or atrinoers beinjf only three invhes thick in the middle! Thia Bridge will be capable of sustaining upwards of 2,000 tons, and will cost only $1,51)0. C-The editor of the Indianapolis Journal, speaking of Col. Gorman, heads the article "how they make great men." We remember once upon a time how the universal whi party made a great man one Zachary Taylor irnamed Za chary Washington, who unmade the whole of whippery. The lesson will profit them, and, not damage the rest of mankind. Lou. Dens. (Resolutions, in effect, rescinding the instruction resolutions of the last session of the Michigan Legislature, passed the lower House of the Legislature of that State on the 22J ult., and no doubt is entertained of their passage through the Sonate. The action of the Leg isla lure of Michigan will relieve Gen. Cass from the necessity of resigning his seat in case the Wilmot I'roviso should come tip in the Senate. How the Newspapers Stand. On look inj over our exchange list we find that we receive sixty papers published in ten of the slaveholding States, extending from Maryland to Louisiana, and out of the sixty we cannot count up more than about fifteen, or one-fourth, which take decided ground for a Southern convention. The rest are either 6tronrly opposed to it. doubt as to its utility, or silent on the subject. Wilmington Chronicle. Omn. The fourth section of the act recently pawed by tue Legislature of Ohio for the calling nf a ConTenlion to amend the State Constitution, provides that the proceedings shall be copyrijjhieJ for publication in a durable form, and that only the Statesman and Journal newspapers, at Columbus, shall have liberty to publish them from day to dny. This has created a strong feeling throughout the State, and there are indignant demands that the unwise and profitless restriction shall be repealed. Mississippi. The Legislature of this State adjourned sine die on the 9th instant. Amongst the laws which it passed, is one authorizing the election, by general ticket, of the additional members of Con gress to which the State may become entitled under the new apportionment, so as to supercede a special session of the Legislature to re-district the State. It is also said that, bv another act, the State has at last determined to receive from the general Government her share of the proceed of the public lands. It is a remarkable fact, that the largest slave-hold era, not only in Virginia, but in all the South, are they who advocate the least violent measures. They ought to know their interests as well as their officious friend. They know that the Union, as long as it is preserved in the spirit in which it was formed, is an effectual protection to their property. They are therefore opposed to all the violent expedients of the Demagogues, which tend to endanger that Union. It is their determination to cling to the Union as to the ark of safety ! Richmond Whig. What thei think of it. A gentleman in Louisiana, writing to the Washington Intelligencer in regard to the feeling in l elation to the Nashville Convention, eaya: "Here and there you can finds man who is in favor of the Nashville Convention; but the masses laugh at It, and the almost universal opinion is, that it will result more disastrously for the people engaged in it, and overwhelm them with more political odium, than did the Hartford Convention those engaged in it. Law Against Truancy. An important bill is at present before the Education Committee of the Le gislature or JHapsachusetts. It is reported on a peti tion from a committee of the Teachers' Association in Boston, and authorizes towns to take all npces aary measures to compel the attendance at school of children, between the ages of six and fit teen, who are permitted by their parents and friends to wander about the streets, and grow up in ignorance and vice. Very important principles are involved in this bill, and its exaction would be attended with many diffi culties. The Sentiments of a Whig. Mr. Toombs a leading Whig member of Congress from Georgia, thus exhorts the South: This cry of the Union is the masked battery from behind which the Constitution and the rights of the South are to be assailed. Let the South mark the man who is for the Union at every hazard and to the last extremity ; when the day of her peril comes lie will be the imitator of that historical character to whom the gentleman from Pennsylvania (Mr. Lana ban) referred, "the base Jodean who, for thirty pieces of silver, threw away a pearl richer than all his tribe." f LATE Case. The superior court of B bb county. Georgia, has mulcted, the Macon and Western Kail road Co. in damage for cutting off tSie leg of a slave man who had taken passage in the cars, showing a general pass, but jumped off and was injured while the train was going. The point decided is. if the company take the negro on the cars, wilhout the knowledge and consent of the owner, and he be in jo red by negligence or otherwise, the company will be liable, though the negro have a general pass. Bait. Sun. OThe New York Courier says that at the Marine Barracks, on Thursday. Actin; Sergeant James Montgomery, of Marines, deliberately shot himself through the h-.:ad with a musket. He was on duty as Quarter-Master Sergeant, in the clothing department, and has been observed for the last fortnight as being very much oppressed by fits nf melancholy. He was constantly studying the Bible and copying maps and charts of the Holy Land described therein, and doubtless has meditated upon the awful act many days previous to the consummation. A William Worsdell was convicted in Pittsburgh, last week, of an attempt to murder a Mr. John Johnson in that city. The witness stated that he was coming over Hand street bridge on the night of the 23d of February, when the defendant started up, de manded his money, fired a pistol at him, which tore a hole in his coat sleeve, stabbed him in the neck. cheek and eye. The defence was that the prisoner was a stranger and in a starving condition the same with his family. His last place of residence was Cincinnati. lie had been a Millerite, and under the belief that "he world was to be destroyed soon, had old all his goods and ruined himself pecuniarily. His wife and five little children were present during the trial. Melancholy Occurrence. A Father Killed bv "hit Daughter. The Mineral Point Tribune learns that a Mr. Hnlburt,, near Cottage Inn, Lafayette county, was killed by his own daughter on Monday last, under the following circumstances: Mr. H., in a fit rf intoxication, had driven his wife from the hoose. and attempted to commit violence oh his daughter, which she resisted. He then, with a large knife in his hand, threatened her, upon which she retreated, and her father followed. She caught an axe and swung it before her in self-defence. Her father rushed forward and came in contact wun tne axe which struck him on the neck, nearly severing his head from bis body. A coroner jury was called and. after examination, considered that the act was perfectly iuetirUWe on the part of the girl, it appear In; very clearly a eiM of sel-defence. Oaity Wit.

M , oo Monday feat, April 15,1300. N. W KS T, Sc'y. Thursday, April II. 1850. Duelling in Congress. A correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette says: All the experience of the present session goes to establish (me important fact, which may be somewhat useful to tlmse who are not advocate of duelling ; viz : that the gentlemen u bo claim to be nicest in their discrimination cf honor and chivalry, are most eanily reconciled after a cause of quarrel has been given. I would not be understood as reflecting in any manner upon their courage, but aa affording encouraging examples of magnanimity to others, who may be more desperately disposed. When Mr. Duer grve Mr. Meade the lie direct in Ihe face and eyes öf the whole country, it was supposed to be a case beyond reconciliation. Yet it was "honorably" adjusted. When Col. Davis challenged Col. BisscII, and the latter accepted, naming muskets for his weapons, and went to sleep on the prospect of a bullet for his breakfasti all hope of an arrangement was considered out of the question, but the challenge wss withdrawn, and it waa "honorably" adjusted. When Major Borland indented the optics of Mr. Foote on the public pave, it being known, that according to the code, blood only can wipe out a blow, a meeting was considered inevitable: vet it was honorably" adjusted. And when Mr. Benton denounced Mr. Foote as a "bl-icksruard," in open Sen ate, and signified too distinctly to be mistaken, that he could be accommodated on his own terms, every body expected a message to pass as soon as decency would admit, and yet it too, ha beeu "honorably" adjusted. After this fashion all questions of honor have been arranged, and the public will best appreciate with how much credit to the parties concerned. These gentlemen who claim to be the peculiar champions of a false code, have brought it into disgrace, and upon themselves nothing short of merited ridicule. Scenes is the Senate. The United States Senate in former days was distinguished for its good ordor, and the general amenity and courtesy observed by ti e members toward each other; but it can no longer make such a boa.t. language and conduct Iii t would be considered disgraceful even in a put house and call fur the interference of the polict, has rec.-nt! been indulged in by some of t!ie members, who seem to cuosider that personal provocation's and invitations to violence dippUy a manliness of deportment and a courage which entitle thern to the admiration of the public. The language used by Mr. Foote toward Mr. Benton, on Tuesday, we look upon as shameful in itself, and disgraceful to the character of the Senate, which permits such low expressions to pass without a severe rebuke. What business have senators, who have been sent to deliberate upon public measures, to introduce matters merely personal into debate ! What have the public to do with a man's motives, and why should one member impugn those of another, except for purposes of insult and injury! When he does so, why does not the Senate interpose and teach the necessity of practising at least the ommon rules of propriety and decency 1 Its self respect we hope will not permit it to allow luch things to be repeated. l'a. ledger. Miraccloui Escape. It has been said that reality frequently exceeds romance, and nothing can better exemplify the axiom than a notice of the providential and almost miraculous escape which Captain G. W. Andrews, of the Caroline, which ship touched here on Saturday, his lately experienced. Captain Andrew", in this instance, whilst in pursuit of a whale, a few days since, took the place of the harpooner, at the bow of the boat. On closing1 with the whale he struck home, and the monster flew immediately down wards like lightning, but by some means, the bight of tae rope caught the ancle or Uptain Andrews, and t a a a TT ..ae wniriea mm overonara. iiis sensriions at this mo ment may be imagined, but cannot be described. Descending rapidly into the depth below, he had yet sufficient presence of mind to retain his hold of the knife; but the pressure of the water was so great, that both his arms were drawn over his head, and he found it impossible to get them down to release himself. Happily the whale, from some cause or other, ceased to run, and Captain Andrews was en abled to sever the rope below his ancle, and ascended to the surface, totally exhausted. The depth to which he descended must have been from fifteen to twenty fathoms, from the time he took to bring himself to the surface again. lie found histnele cvit t the bone, and otherwise severely injured. Probably an accident like the one here noticed has never occurred before, in which the sufferer has escaped with life, and, bad not Capt. Andrews happily retained his hold of the knife, Ji most certainly would have perished. Ceylun limes. Bloody Contest. According to information re. ceived by the Jacksonville ((II.) Journal, a severe and bloody contest recently took place on the Naples road about fiv miles from that place, between a runaway negro and two white men. The white men attempted to capture the negro; the negro resolutely resifd them, but was himself badlf injured. Wounded and faint from loss of blood, the negro escaped over to the railroad, where after lying several hours, he was found by a white man, who took him to his house. dressed his wound and kept him until next morning. Finding that the negro was then able to travel, he told hin lo take the first horse he could catch, and make his escape ! He did as ho was told. The man whose horse was taken, was afterwards apprised of his whereabouts, aud assured of his safe return.
