NCWS OF XII E DAY. Calcraft, the British hangman, gets 19 a piece, ay $00 fur executions. A competitor offered tu turn off a criminal fur nothing, and in full "os tidy a manner" as the great cxcculiorier could do it; but it was to do purpose. The Annual Report of the City Inspector was last evening trail iroittrd to the Common Council. We gather from it the subjoined statement of Mortality in the City for the past year. The number and variety of diseases we are a- yet unable to obtain. The total number of Deaths is 23.773. In 1843 it was 15,919 ohowinjf an increase for the past year of nearly Eight Thousand. Ar. V. Tribune. CT" We understand tl;at the officers attached to the United States surveying service have determined to erect a monument to ihn memory of R. II. Fauntleroy, Esq., who died at Galveston, Tcia. in December last, while in the discharge of his duties In the service. This is a high and deserved compliment. Mr. F. waa a most faithful officer, an amiable gentleman, and passionately devoted to (he cause of science. New Albany Democt at. The Benefits or Advertising. When one has a good article which can be afforded cheaper than others can afford it, it is an cbject for him to advertise, and the more extensively he advertises, the larger bueinee-s he will do. As an illustration, we would refer t Geo. W. Simmons, ?q., of Boston, who, by adhering to the low-priced system and extensive advertising, has built up the largest clothing establishment in tlin country, and has enured Oak Hall to be known throughout the civilized world. Public Documents. The Philadelphia Inquirer, commenting upon the delays which sttrnd the issuing of the congressional documents, which are looked fr with great aaxiety all over the country, observes: "It is in the last degree scandalous, that the great business interests of the country should be trifled with, in order to get the public printing executed under co$t. Interests involving millions give way to the policy of saving thousands and while the spigot ia watched, the cask is emptying at the buughole. There is no class of legislators bo expensive to a country as those who aro always moving about to save a penny at the cost of a pound.' Ocr Representative. It is with no ordinary degree of pride and satisfaction, that we commend the course of our Representative in Congress, Graham i N. Fitch, to the strict scrutiny of his conatitnents. To him bclung9 the honor of making the firt Northern speech after the organization af Congress, in opposition to the wild, extravagant demands of the South. It is good to reflect, that Indiana has one voice in Congress that will not be hushed by the threats and menaces of the Slavery propagandists. Mr. Fitch is the man for the station, and the man for the times. He has the intelligence to understand. and the heart to appreciate the wishes of his consti tuents. and the nerve to 'carry them out. Ho ranks among our first and ablest Representatives. Gusfun Democrat, March 2!. Advantages of the Plank Road. Mr. Seth Way hauled with foi;r horses at om load 1'16 bushels or corn from this place to Michigan City, on the plank road, one day this week. Fifty bushels would have been a pretty good load for the same team to haul from this to the City before the road was made So, by paying 75 cents or Si toll, he was enabled to perform with a four-horse team the same labor tnat without the plank road would have required two days with the same team. So it will be seen that Mr. . and every other man who has produce to haul from this place or vicinity, actually makes more than twice as much on each trip as the plank road makes off of him in tolls, although stock in the road, it is ssid. pays a very handsome profit on the amount ex pended. Laporte Whiff. A Horse's opinion of Plank Roads. The North Carolinian tells the following anecdote of an old farmer who had tried the plank road: He was at first much opposed to the plank road, and thought it would be a waste of money to build it. But he came to Fayetteville with his wagon and produce, and drove on it some miles. When he got back to Chatham, our merchant friend asked him if he had soen the plank roadl "Yes," he eaid, "tie had seen it.' "Well, don't you think you can cairy four times as much weight on it with a four-hotse team as on a common road! "Oh yes," says he, "it's first rate; and it's a fact that when the wagon got to the end of the planks and struck the heavy dirt road, every horse stopped and looked round, A Large Hotel. The Burnett IIoue at Cincin rati, the Gazette says, is the largest hotel, built ex pressly as a hotel, in America, or perhaps in tlie world. It will cost 5225,000 for ground and build ing; it is 212 feet wide; runs back 209 feet; is five stories high, and s urircunted by a dome 42 fret in diameter, with a cupalo. A continuous promenade of 658 feet extends around the building. The "entrance hall" is reached by a Ionic portiro of great beauty is 67 by 40 feet There is a dining room express iv for children a new idea and a capital arrange ment. The wholo number of rooms is 312. About 550 persons can be lodged comfortably in the hou.e, Every story in the whole' home has two hydrants. The bar room is 73 feet each way, has 30 cast iron doric columns, and is reached from the interior of the bouse aeveral ways, by elegant iron step. A Silver curry-comb for Old Whitey. It is nut pensrally known, that on the day that a gold me' dal, furnished by citizens of New York, was presented to Colonel Bliss, at the White House, a silver curry-comb, furnished by citizens of the same prent Slate, was presented to General Taylor, for the benefit of "Old Whttey, the President' war-lmrsp. Governor Seward was the orator on the occasion. Of all the absurdities that have been transncted in Washingtoo during a great many years, this strikes us as the most absurd. The donors of the curry-comb must have been badly off for a vent for their enthusiasm, when they e'x pended it in a bit of plate for a horse. We should think, too, that Colonel Bliss must hate felt flattered at having himself associated with the old steed in the affections and honors of New York. Gifts and honors from the Empire State will have a new value, now that the world knows that they are extended alike to man and beast. The North vs. the South.--A general fight took place in Purchase, between Atkinson and Pearl streets, yesterü'iy, after school hours. The combatants were boys who reside at the North and South parts of the city and the difficulty between them arose out of some dispute concerning the superiority if the inhabitant of those localities. Many efforts dad been made to "compromise," but to no purpose The Southerners would coneed nothing they must gut "war was inevitable." The lads of tho North End after much deliberation, finally took up thechal lenge, met. their adversaries at the point designated, end faueht them bravely. The content, while it last ed, was very fierce, and one Southern chap was awfully whipped. He was the Senator Fote of his party, and he received a bloody nope, a black eye. and Iiis pantaloons were badly torn. Th pre-aence some policemen cut ehort the contest ; but as far as it went, the South suffered the most. liosUm Cnur. Colleges. Female Doctors. -We n'tite Ihe fact of many. fe males entering into, and graduating at, the various medical institutions in this country ; and the time appears not far distant, when women, more than before, will devote ilieir attention to the hen I in p art. "In Queen Christina's time," relates the historian Fryxwell, "the duties or physicians were mostly porform ed by wide women, and there were, in those) days. very few eick in he country." Woman is. by nature, peculiarly htted lor the kindly offices or the sick room ; her gentl and persevering diepoeition, nd unmitigated watchfulness around the cuuehes of the sick, are the be.t nf all opiates for pain. The chamber of the sick is doubly drear, where woman's ndiant smile is nut dispen-vd; the pillow which is not smoothed by a woman's hand, is, indeed, a hard resting place fur an aching head. Auer being properly educated and trained, women pnae all the other qualities to render tlif-m g"ol and ueeful physician. We are aware that there h a strong prejudice against ladies entering into the profeitn; but the example of Mia Black well, whrt lately graduated at the Medical College of Geneva, N. Y., is being followed by -evcral ladies, who have made application to the different medical schools in the enaLPennnylvanian. New Spbino Bonnkt.
