Swedish, or Russian iron. As it is procured at a more favorable rate than from those . . countries, and as it is abundant in the Hfnv lYcing market, this article will doubtless btfore long become an object of an important trtda with China. Enormoü" Increase in the Iron Business in Wiles. The increase of the iron business is, probably, unexampled in the history of the world. The population, during the 40 ye-ra from lifll to 1841, increased in Newport from 1 123 to 13,733 ; iu TreYethin from 1742 to 14,932; in AberyswitU fn.m 805 to 11,272 ; in Betwelty from 619 to 22,418. In Glarrvrgau the increase has been, ifnot in the same proportion, still enormous in itself." Thun, during the same period, the increase at Merthyr has been from 7750 to 34.977; at Cardiff from 1970 to 10,077; at Swansea, from G331 to 16,737. The progress in the actual trade ia e hown by the returns to be equally nstouishiog. In 1S20, the iron sent from the worker for shipment to Newport was 45,462 tons; in 1847, 240,637. The quantity at Cardiff in 1820 was 50,157 tons; in 1347 it was 220,953 tons; ani this is exclusive of a quantity of iron shipped from smaller ports, which owe their existence to tb.8 lut twenty years. Fbeedom or the Press. Some idea of the extent to which it exists in France, under the government of Louis Napoleon, may m gathered from the following exlrac. of a letter from Mr. Walsh, la:e U. S. Consul atT'aris: " be Peuple, the daily paper founded by Proudhoo, has undergone, in eight months of existence eighteen prosecutions and convictions. The sentences amount altogether, to thirlyjour years of imprisonment, and a very large sum in fanes. Five of I'm editors are now in jail, and one is in exile. It survives under a new title." SiwrLa r Occurrence. A Munich periodical relates ti.at a man named Matthias Mangelbacher being attacked by a severe fit of the toothache stopped up his ears with gun-cotton, not knowing but what it was the common cotton he was accustomed to use in such cases. In retiring to his room for the night, he seated himself before a wood fire, from which a spark flew out and struck the tuft of gun-cotton, which exploded with such violence that it blew the whole top of his head off. That will pass for a touh one ! Cool Proceedings of the Oriental, Ladies. Daring the hottest months, when the thermometer is often at the height of 120 degree Fahrenheit, the ladiu wear a silken garment and slippers but no stockings. At night, it is the custom to sleep on the terraces, at the top of the house, in the open air, the men, the children, and the domestics, having each their separate terraces. Strange as it may sound, it is by no means an uncommon practice with the ladies in Bagdad, in tbe month of July and August, to strep their night clothes in cold water which is slung up for this purpose, in skins, in order to keep it as cool as possible. Having done this, they put them on wringing wet, and again retire to bed of palm branches, to enjoy refreshing slumbers. Notwithstanding this practice, rheumatism is rarely ever heard of in that coontry. The London Times. There is no other newspaper in the world wliic'i wields so grvat an influence as th London Times. It has placed itself at the head uf the pres in Europe, and speaks with a degree of authority which kings might eovy. The individuals concerned in its man -.geinetit are nothing the paper itself is every thin?. In its columns public questions are continually discuwd, with masterly ability. It, may easily be conjectured, that no one mind could originate, prepare, and utter, from day to day, the erudite, far-reaching disquisition which tell so powerfully on the opiniou of the world ; but that is a matter of no consequence. The Time speaks, and its word is potential. It is a gigantic impersonality , disembodied oracle, whose voice penetrates every corner of the civilized world, and moulds the thoughts of a large portion of the human family. Those who are familiar with the way in which its machinery is made to operate, know that many pens aro regularly employed upon that sheet. Yet nothing is more evident than the fact, that all its articles, from whatever source thpv mv come, bear a single im Dress. The Times utters one language. It scorns to tell the public that ; it disapproves of what itself has said. It never strangles its own offspring. The absence of a responsible," or the indiscretion of an ."assistant," is never proclaimed as the excuse for an acknowledged blunder. Such a practice would soon bring even that great journal into contempt. ' Yet the Times has a responsible edrtor,"tne who, while he scarcely ever writes anything himself, carefully supervises, alters and corrects every editorial. and gives a consistent character to all the utterances ; of the paper. He never informs the public that nobody writes for his journal except himself, well know- j ing that nothing e!e he could say would injure it so much. Several men of burning, talent and expert-. ence are engaged upon a liberal stipend to write reg-) ularly for its columns. Tbcy furnish articles upon ! such subjects as may be eugested by their principal, or by their own judgment. They are all carefully read, examined, and usually altered and corrected by the editor. No writer can have any assurance hit his production will appear in the shape given it by himself; and none is ever at liberty to claim in any way the authorship of his own articles. It is thus. by making the paper great, and those who conduct it nothing, that the Time has come to be the mot considerabis journal in existence. It well knows that the public care less than nothing about the individuals . . . . . II. who sit at its deslcs. Ail lis reaoers want is an uuic, . . . , in - j . 1 1 . Ii hat been discovered in England by a Mr. Burke, that the golden sulphuret of j antimony mixed with India rubber, and submitted to the action of heat at 30 degrees, in & Doner, tinuer pressure, from four to six hours, will produce what is known as metallic rubber, after which the goods will resist the action of extremes of heat or cold, yet retain for indefinite time, a much greater degree of lasticity than those produced by the melting of sulphur with lead mixed with rubber. Fabrics prepared according this invention can be made to take all the most delicate tints of color, quite free from the odor cf sulphur, so objectionable in other mod of vulcanizing. Mixed with gutta percba, images, the entire features of the face, which are capable of being distorted into inuumerable and grotoeque forms, hae been produced. Overcoats have been tnada by this process to weigh but twenty-two ounces and capable of being crammed into tbe pocket, the discovery may be succinctly described as follows: Mix 15 parts of goldeji sulphurct of antimony with 100 parti of India rubber, and when Ihoroughly " mafcticated " as known to manufacturers, the articles are to be made up and then submitted In hat in a boiler under pteesure at a temperature varying from 260 to 280 degrees Fahrenheit. Augusta ((a.) Cou. Feb. 5. Michigan. By a statement pubJiIvd in ti e Detroit paper, it appear there are 22S flourishing mills in the Stae 1 Michigan, having 563 run of ston and an aggregate capital invented of $1,490,400. Thcfe mills employ 593 hand, and during the ean of 1849 manufactured 719,473 barrels of flour. The Prebyterian Herald states that the lady of the Rev. Dr. Lindley, of Nashville University linsrmde a donation of $15 000 to the Theological' Seminary of New Albany, additional to the donation of $15.000 by her former husband, tbe founder of the Seminary. A Liberal Bequest. Mr. David Coir, who deceased recently, we learn from the Nonpare l. bequeathed the sum of $15,000 to be sppropriated towards the erection of an ajlum for indigent females. Mr. Corr was a man who made n outward profession of religi-m, but this bequest shows his heart was ritfht without it. Cin. Enq. Female Sailors. Several instance of females who have donned the garb of sailors, and followed the ea for years, hav been recorded lately. We are informed that there is a case of the kind in this city. It is that of a woman twenty-six years of age, whose birth place was in the British provinces. Some six years ago she was wronged by an English sea-captain, whom she determined to follow for the purpose of reparation and revenge. For five years she searched for him in the dress of a sailor, in nearly every quarter of the world, without being able to reach him. At length, 1 1 Liverpool, she met with an accident in eousequence of the swinging of the jib-boom, wben her sex was discovered. She arrived here on her return from Liverpool, a week or two since, and some persons who are interested f r her are endeavoring to get her a passage to Halifax, where she represents that she has both money and friends. Boston Traveller, 26iA ult. Fatal Mistake. A medical practitioner. Dr. N. Ray, of Madison county. Mo., recently administered by mistake, a large dose of sulphate of morphine, for Dover's Powder, to a worthy citizen of that county, Mr. Joseph Farrell, who died in consequence a few hours after. Dr. Ray publishes a statement of the facts in the Paris Mercury, and avails himself of the opportunity to announce his withdrawal from the medical profession. Mr. Farrell left a large and dependent family to mourn his loss. The Dr. says : "It being night, and having went to bed, the error was not discovered until it was too late to remedy the evil. The calamity, if pssible, is the more regretted by me, as the deceased has always been a particular friend, and has left an amiable family to struggle through the hardships of life without a protector." A Slave Case, of a rather complicated nature, has just been decided in Raleigh, N. C, whither the slave, a man named William Hardy, was taken from Baltimore. He was a free man, but being arrested in the latter place for felony, was sold for a certain term, winch wits afterwards extended on the plea of disorderly conduct. The Court has ordered him to remain a slave until 1856. Family Poisoned. The family of Mr. Murphy, of Montgomery. Alabama, were all taken suddenly sick a few days ago, and he, with his daughter, aged fifteen, and a child, all died. A negro woman, the family cook, has b' cn'lodged in jail on strong suspicion of having mixed arsenic in the food. Texas's "Voice is for War." Tho Legislature of Texas is very warlike on the subject of Santa Fe jurisdiction. A commissioner is about to start to organize tbe counties, backed by five hundred Rangers. J This is pretty good backing, and as Santa Fe has been placed by the U.S. Government under the jurisdiction of the military government of the Territory, which of course will exert its authority, the Ranger stand a chance of seeing some service, unless they are peaceably instructed. At present it looks like a row Terribly Prolific. The Pottsville (Pa.)
