Remarkable Operatw.. We take the liberty of noticing a very successful operation performed by a physician of our city en a gentleman named Ninian Iloskius, a minuter of tlie gospel in Crawford county, Indiana. He has been blind from birth, and was induced to place himself under the hand of D-xrtor Sloan, of our city, who operated upon one of hi9 eyes. Mr. lloskina was taken home to Crawford county be' fore the band, were removed; and when thi wa. done, we are informed by a gentleman residing in that nei Ittarhood that the operation was found to have been eminently successful, lie describes the emotions of the patient, when suddenly possessed of a sense so novel to him, to be of the most enthusiastic description. Things which lie had Ion been acquainted with through the medium of ihe other senses, became possessed of a i:e.v and eurpaa.sinp; beauty, and ruada which he had böen u?ed to travel fearlessly when blind, had t be again learned. His wife and children, ichom ht hud never seen, his friend, his parishioners, his home, every thinj endeared to him, became 02 unending source of delight and new-born gratification. lie had the eame confused notions of distance which we see the smallest children manifest, and took the liveliest pleasure in beholding the great variety of colors. In short, he was compelled to learn to see, in precisely the same manner that the mallest child does; and to him it was an occupation of the most cratifying nature. He could scarcely realite that his sight, with all the blessings of which he had been so suddenly gifted; wan the medium through which he gained so many new pleasures, so imple was it in its operation; and yet, to him, so mysterious. Above all, a fervent gratitude to his Maker and the physician thfou'h whose instrument ality he had been restored to sight was the most pre dominant feeling. We understand that Dr. S. intends operating upon the other eye as soon as the tone of the one restored becomes established, and the convenience of Jlr. Ho6kin3 will permit of it. It may be well to Jtate that this notice is made entirely without the knowledge of Dr. S., and on the authority of a gentleman perfectly conversant with the circumstances. Aew Albany Bulletin. To take A SrECK from the Eye. We lately learned a very clever and safe mode of extracting any little speck of dirt or dust from the eye, when it cannot be easily removed by the hands. It consists iu licking it out with the tongue. The person affected lays his head down with his faCe uppermost, and the operator, desiring that the eye shall be kept open, comes across it gently with his tongue so as effectually to wipe it clear of the extraneous body. This we find has been a common practice amon-f Eome classes of stone cutters, on getting what is called a fire in their eye; and we doubt if the whole of the resources of the medical art could afford a better remedv. De. Eeecher on Flogging in the Navy. The despotism and cruelty practised on the deck of our national vessels was in plain defiance of the laws of God and every principle of Liberty and Equality. Il was a terrible thing to subject man to an irresponsible government under the cruel passions of his fellow man. To whip a seaman with tha bloody knot was revolting to humanity and no proper mode of enforcing allegiance to duty. Suppose that the farmer was driven under the lash to till the ground; suppose that the shoemaker was forced to ply his needle by the whip; fuppose that the lawyer at the bar was compelled to be honest by the cat-o'-nine tails, we should require a myriad of despots to do all the executory work of mankind, with all the rest of the race for slaves. Allow me, thh evening, to introduce an animal called the Elephant. He is the greatest of all the tread-mill animals that helps to keep the world in motion. Among the Anglo-Saxons, he is known only by the name of Elephant; bat with all barbarous ond half-civilized nations he is unanimously dubbed the buUiphanl. He is about the size of a two year old omnibus, and in color approaches as near to a black as he can without infringement. To look at him, not too severely, one naturally supposes him to be a small mountain of Indian rubber, or a huge composition of glue and molasses. The Elephant is one of the natives of the East Indies, but he has been met with in various parts of. Mexico, and is frequently seen in the creat city of 1 New York. It has been asserted upon both righteous and profane authority, that he U indigenous to the '. "digging" of Cal.fornia; ho ever the assertion, as j yet, goes a begging for confirmation. It is my private opinion though, that the animal exhibits himself, to travellers in nil parts of the world, only they entertain a monstrous reluctance to confessing ihe fact. He always eirrie hid trunk with him wherever he goes, but never keeps any thing in it, uot eve:i a change of shirts. When cousin Ichabod first saw him at a show, he exclaimed with mute astonishment, 'Then that's the rale minagerer! th identical critter hisself! I swow wouldn't two of 'en mak a team to draw stun with! Golly, ain't he a scrougcr!" Ichabod went home and relate 1 what he had seen. "I 6een," "aid he, "the genuwine meuagr-rer the darndest bigeät lump of flesh that ever stirred. . IIa had two tails, o-,e behind end tothcr before. He put one of his taihj in my cat pocket, and hauled out the gingerbread every hooter. What do you think he done with it? Why, he stuck it into his own pocket, and began to fumble for more drat him!" A Cool Operation. "Hello, there, Capting !' said a brother Jonathan to a captain of a canal packet on the Erie Canal ; "what do you charge fir passage!" "Three tents per mile and boarded," said the captain. "Wall. I guess I'll take passage, capting, seein as how I'm kinder pin eout walking so far." Accordingly he got on board just as the steward was ringing the bell fr dinner. Jonathan eat down and be;an to demolish the 'fixens' to the utter consternation of the captain, until he had cleared the table f all that was eatable, when ha got up and went on the deck, picking his teetlt very comfortably. "How far is it capting, from here to where I come on board !" 'Nearly one and a half miles," said th captain. "Let's see," said Jonathan, "that would bo Just four and a half cents; but never mind, capting, I wont't be small ; here's five cents, which psya my fare to here; I guess I'll gu ashore now; I'm kinder rested eout." The captain vamosol f r th-j cabin, and Jonathan went ashore. The captain did not tske any more way passengers' the remainder of the summer. Most Sucoestive. It is said that when the Queen arrived at Arrochee, in Scotland, from Belfast, she was "out of provisions." Three gentlemen, happen ing to neat trie inn, heard or her dilemma, and rwed olTto the royal yacht with all the eatables they culd find, swven loaves and twenty-four herrings. Their arrival was opportune, ond her Majesty is said to have lunched vi the loaves and fishes in a tn st mi racnh'us manner. What a sensation it would hive produced among the Cocknies, had Victoria fallen a common victim with many of Her Irish subj'xts, to starvation! After all, ihe Belfast armpathy appear to have ben very unsubstantial, when they sent Her Majesty off with "nothing to eat." The impending cngt ance if lih-ody Filz & Co., which for sometime pat had been pent up, (in consequence of two applications having been forwarded to the Department, from the Taylor-ide of the house, for the important trust of IW-mastership at the above named village,) has found vent at last and Samuel 13.
