VARIETY. Love If you cannot inspire a womin with love for you, fill her above the brim with lore fur herself, and all that runs over will be yours. The latest way to pop the question i to ask the fair lady "if you shall have the pleasure cf seeing her at the minister's." Byron said the greatest trial to a woman's beauty was the ungraceful act of eating eggs', he never saw one of the critters hanging on by the teeth to a blading hot corn cob, that' clear. "A-las! a-las!" as .lie old bachelor exclaimed when be felt a desire tu marry. He made the same exclamation af.er marriage, but pt-ll it differently. At a Parish examination a clergyman asked a charity boy if he had ever been baptised. "No sir," was the reply, "not as I knows for, but I've been waxinated." Father Mathew's Seal. The private seal of the Rev. Theobold Mathew represents a fountain bursting from a rock, with the following motto: "Drink from the bubbling fountaiu, drink it free, .'Twas good for Sampson and 'tis good for thee." Charles Sprague, returning a note to the Rev. John Pierpont, wh'ch he had paid at the Globe Bank, Boston, wrote the following couplet on the envelope: Eeliold a wonder seldom seen by men! Lines of no value from John Pierpont's pen. Jules Fabre, in a debate in the French Assembly on restricting the freedom of the pres?, said forcibly, that the cause of France's unquiet "was because its republican heart was still enclosed in a monarchical mould." "Ike," said a rusty old heathen of the desk, "how do astronomers measure the distance to thu sun 1" "Why," replied the young hopeful, "they guesses at one fourth the distance, and multiplies by fonr. The old desk worm fainted. Education in New York. Out of 156 academic and 27,077 pupils in New York, only six academies teach the science of agriculture. Of the whole number, only one academy omits the tuition of declamation. A student of Yale being confined to his room by sickness was called upon by a friend. What, John, sa d the visiter, "sick, eh!" 'yes, "sic sum!' I am so. "Ain't you afraid you will break, while falling sol" sid a chap in the pit of a circus to the clown. "Why sol" asked the latter. "Because you are a tumbler," replied the wag. The clown fainted. "My pood gracious! I wonder what they'll manufacture out of grain next," said Mrs. Partington. "Here is an account of a man making a rye face, and -f another making a floury speech; then a whole column about corn laws." A Berlin correspondent of the London News says, when Nicholas heard of the success of the Russians over the Hungarians, and the occupation of Debrezin by Coedajfff, he commenced dancing about his room in Iii el.irt. It is said that he continued for three whole hours t exhibit in this extravagant way the joy with which the news of so quick a triumph had inspired him. A wager once laid that a Yankee would always answer a question by asking another; and to decide that matter, a down-easter was interrogated.' I want you, said the better, to pive me a straightforward answer to a plain question." "I kin du it, Mister," said the Yankee. "Then why is it that New Englanders always answer a question by asking one in return!" Du theyl" was Jonathan's reply. A Lawyer's Bill. Letter from an Old Typo. Chelsea Beach, Mass., (Sunday!) Aug. 28, 1849. Dea Geobce. It i now about three o'clock, P. M , ind I am writing; fiom a cozy neat insi te rry wagoo. You wi'l collect that I promised writing jou fiorn this place. It is very pleasant here the more to to me, front the fact of my being an ardent lover of fretdon to range whithersoever I please. The Beach, with invaiicd landscape, the blue tod free waters laving at in aide, for mi lea around, pieaeni a beautiful scene. Seals are sporting on the rocks amid the ocean before me, end vaiious wild fowl are skimming over the bi in jr deep adding addi ioiial enchantment lo the picturesque view. Nahant is io the distance, and the Robinon Ciuoe Hume near by. To the reflective mind, to tbe soul yearning for the romantic and the marvelous, what thoughts are being wrought Gran Irur and besu'y so profusely bestowed by nature upon her W'-rks, fill my heart 10 satiety, and I inwardly long that thus it my erer be. - But a valued friend is one of my companion to the seaaide. It i the Captain! Aod piay, methinks you ask, who is the captain? I will tell you, dear George. It i an old chum a real litt typo, beating the name of George B. Edwaids you ought lo know bim and perhaps you do. a brother of James G. Edward, the editor of the Barlington Hawk Eye, Iowa. The captain is fat get'ing venetable in years, and lias in Conner limes lumped the Far Went, iu a-
iious wats and lo diveis place. He is a good and hone-l soul; may his declining sun be richly laden with the finita of a life well spent, and his last sleep the sleep of peace I would be with you, even for a very shott hour, if circumstances permitted perhaps I may ere visit you iu your tanctum eJitorial ! Stiange thing Ate lakeo place. But hold! I have not told you of our fiied fisii the clam chowder, and the other et cetera. We have lived phot to-day! And thankfulness and giatitude fill our breasts for tbe sumptuous tepat Nature has afforded u. Anuther friend, who aerompaitiei the Csptain, and a dear and wee sonni of a neighbor of mine, are elo partakers with us. Indeed, we aie a happy set, and aball, no doubt, enj'-y nor tide plrasantly. "Old Whitey,- but not the General's old Whitey, has brought u down, and is now at giaas around the environs of the beach. And speaking of the General, isn't it too bad, that the hero of Mexico a.ioold suffer himself to be so sadly duped by auch an insignificant and wanton set of scape-goats as his Cabinet ate composed of? Either the General is a foolish simpleton, or he connives and laughs at ibe tretcheiy that foil w his footsteps! It is bad enough even io i's best light. 1 sincerely hope that Cass and Butler may be elected the next campaign. It is now just five o'clock, P. M., and we have to teeord an incident in ieferei.ee to our old Whitey. While tbe fiienJ were about on a tiamp after water, old Whitey got awfully mired, and bad it not been for the very oppoitune passing of two strauger friends, who heioically helped Whitey out of
his perilous position, we most assuredly should have had to pay funeial ceiemonies to his defunct caicase, for it would
ave been all over with him. He is now on bis legs again,
nd we shall soon resume ear homewaid journey.
The stranger tuend, too, met at tbe am lime, with a
reakdowo, their charge having given way in Ibe centre of
the shaft. All, Dow, is fixed and we are stalling for borne.
It is now eight o'clock, aud our Whitey, notwithstanding
is mishap, has Drought us to our domtcil at Iambi idgeport.

All well and hope this find yon likewise. ' Youis, as ever, in a big clam, J. N. B.
Destructive Fire Incendiarism. This met a-
ng, between 12 and 1 o'clock, a fire broke out in the
carpenter's shop of Davis & Turner, on First between Main and Market streets, and the flames soon communicated to the Mechanic Engine House and the
ivery Stables of Messrs. Johnson & Heirisou, stajns
contractors, and Mr. Kennedy of this city, from this
the fire spread to a bui.'ding occupied in the first
tory by Mr. Bradly, a-t a blacksmith chop, and in
the second by Mr. Bloodgood, as a carriage finish-
ng shop, which was partially consumed. lhe
oss of Messrs. Bradley & Bloodgood was not very
arge. The horses, carriages, &.C., in the livery sta
bles were all saved. We could not in the hurry as
certain the loss.
In the carpenters shop of Messrs. Davis & Turner
there were 16 chests of tools, besides a lot of work,
umber, &c, which were, together with the b iilding,
entirely consumed; estimated los, exclusive of build
ing about 1,500 no insurance. Mechanic Engine House entirely consumed los9 unknown. Sime flight damage was done to the carriage house of Mr.
Thompson. The fire was the work of an incendiary.
We understand one of the watchmen chased a man
from the building in which the fire originated, but
lost sight f him in the alley above first street. Madison, Courier Sept. Alh.
12,8811,486 The Westminister Review says, that "the male heirs of the peerages in England, in a great majority of rases, become extinct, and all the baronetages become extinct for want of male heirs, though many of each have female representatives." Galignani, in his Guide to Paris, says that nearly all the old Parisian families are extinet, particularly the male portion. In the great city of Paris not one thousand persons can reckon their ancestors as far back as Louis XIII. Repartee. "Why is it, said Mr. T., a distinpuiehed Uwyer of a city cf New England, to his l'rirnd Mr. II., a clergyman of high reputation in the same place "why is it that you ministers are always
quarrelling with each other, while we lawyers, wicked as we are represented to be, are remarkable for our courtesy, and seldom disagree among ourselvesl' "Is it possible so fine and classical a scholar as yourself, Mr. T., should be under the necessity of asking that question! Hear what an answer Milton gives you" Devil, with devil damned, Firm concord hold Men only disaeree." The best lick we have lately seen at official dignity, comes from the Picayune. The incident transpired seme years since in the Legislature of Louisiana: Sir," said a member from Assumption, "I am here-, the proud representative of my constituents: am I ere, from the Parish of Assumption, and while Island upon this floor. I and Assumption are of a piece." Yes," said an honorable member opposite ; "and you are the d -et piece of aesumption that was ever heard of." Cosclcsive. A clergyman of the Universalist denomination, was accused, while in Lowell, ff "vioVn'ly dragging his wife from a revival meeting, and compelling her to go home with him." He replied as follows: 1. I have n-ver attempted to influence my wife in her views, nor her choice of a meeting. 2. My wife has not attended one of the revival meeting; in Lowell. 3. I b-ive not attended even one of those meetings for nnv pvrpnmm whatpyer. 4 Neither mr wife, nor myself, have any inclination tr attend th'.Kr meetings.

A Practical Joke. Not very long since, a small
farmer in a little village in Somersetshire, who prided himself on his cheeses, in a fit of unwonted generosi
ty for he was a penurious man sent to her mntesty
Queen Victoria a prime cheese. A person given to
practical jokes knowing this, bought an eighteen penny gilt chain, and sent it in a ltiter, purporting to bo
from her majesty, appointing her well beloved
mayor of the village, in the docket exalted into a corporate town, but whereof he, the said mayor, formed the sole body and whole authority. The ignorant
poor man swallowed the bait, and called the village to
gether, gave an ox to be roasted whole, and
walked at the head of the invited procession, wearing his chain of office; and for several weeks exhibited the insignia of royal autograph at church and at markets. Blackwood.
British Freedom of the Pres. In theory the press is free in Great Britain; in fact, it is liable to be suppressed as completely as in France, though in a different mode. The Government does not enter the office and break the presses and scatter the types of an obnoxious journal ; all it does is to refuse to register it or supply stamps, and it is as effectually quelled as in France or Austria. Here is a specimen : The Irish Stamp office authorities have, by direction of Government, refused to register the proposed new series of the Nation newspaper, or supply stamps for it. Therefore Mr. Duffy's new project is knocked on the head. Gibe.

AND ALL THE VARIOUS FORMS OF BILIOUS DISEASES SPEEDILY AND THOROUGHLY CURED BY Dr. Osgood's Indian Cliol:igogue. The following extract is from the Farmer's and Emigrant's Hand Book, a valuable work of some 500 papes, recently published bf Menu. Appleton A. Co., New York. In chapter 8, page 335, the an thor, speaking of Fever and Ague, remarks : "There is a valuable medicine sold in most of the Western cities which we can conscientiously recommend for Fever and A pie, and other bilious diseases, it is Ibe Indian Cholagngue, mhkh Is prepared by Dt. Osgood, of New York, wbo has made the bilious dimeders of lhe West his special sludv. VTe are no friends of ttioae medicines usually called patent, but we have had ample opportunity of testing tbe invaluable effects of the Cholagnene in bilious carea." Tbe speedy and permanent relief afforded by the Cholagrtgae arises from its prompt and healthy action upon tbe blood, cleansing it from bile and restoring it to punly ; thus striking at the roc. Its tendency Is not simply lo suspend aiaeave, but lo remove the cause cm
which it depends. 11 is equally adapted to ail ages and conditions of the system. From 8. F. Cary, Counsellor at Law, In tbe Agents in Cincinnati Cincikhati, October 11, 184(i. My phyaical energies bad been much impaired by a previous attack of bilious fever. Having tiied several favorite remedies without relief, a friend la whoialhad confidence, recommended Dr. (Hgrod's Indian Cholagogum. I procured a bottle, and followed tlie accompanying directions. The consequence was, that I bad hut one paroxysm sfter taking the first dose, and my general health was rapidly restored without ajsir.g any other medicine. I disposed of Ihe remainder of tbe bottle to twi other persons siinRary afflicted, and with the sauie resuks. One of them bad leea shaking air eight snooths, and was relieved ht two days by the use of tbe CUota rogue. I consider it rut duty, as k is my pleasure, to recommend it, having lhe most entire confidence i its sanative power. Yours, truly, 8. F. CA RY. Tbe disease continued upon me in despite ot quinine and other popular remedies, when Mr. B. handed me a bottle of Indian Cholagoeue which you had the kindness lo send me. I immediately commenced taking the medicine according to directions, and before 1 had exhausted the contents of tlie bottle, was decidedly better.
