lriiat is llic Xcws! TbU question is asked of us liuurlv. The Tost o.Uce h crowded on tlie arrivals of the Southern and Eastern mails, and anxiety depicted on every face, to lean if it hrins news frotn'tlie army any tliinjj from -'cotl or Taylor. All is suspense. We p.r

body elfc. It bocomps almost an annoyance. Hailed from every .t re, workshop, and other place of busi-
nrss, it is almoet impossible to gt alon our main! thoroughfares. In the absence of any thing authentic, 1 we give the following, from the Telegraphic de-j
pitches of the Columbus Statesman and the Cincinnati piper, premising that the rumort arts universally doubted. Richmaxp, Va., Sept. 6, 9, P. M. The mail this evening bring Mew Orleans papers of the 3)th. The schooner Mississippi arrived on the evening of the iMth, bruising' Vera Crux dat m to the 21st Aug., at which place news ha been received that General Scott's advanced guard arrived at .Ayolta, miles from the Capital, on the loth. The reinforcement eixlr Capt. Wells returned to Vera Cruz on tire 17th, after being repulsed at tire National Briilj; with the lost of the pack mules, horses, and most ef the baggage wagons. The twelve Dragoon, dispatched to reconnoitre the Tridife have not been heard from, and it was eupposod at Vera Cruz that the whole party had fallen into the l.a.ids of the guerillas. The 'fcgoti train was supposed to be in saf;y beyond Cciro Gordo. A rumor reached Vera Cruz prior to the sailing of the Mississippi, that G n. Scott h-i"J met the enemy at or near Ayolta, and was repulsed tv ith the loiS of ÖOÜ men. No i el i a nee was placed in the rumor. The lat Division of General Scott's troops, 4001) strong, marched from 1'uehla on the HHh ultimo. From the Neic örllint Cmmeicial Timet, 3JA u.'t. Mexico Liter Iiuin Vena Cru: Train attacked Skirmishes with the (iwrilliis(ijtterat Scott at Ayulla, within eight leagues of the Capita.' By the arrival here, yesterday, of th schonrer Mississippi, Capt. Clark, from Vera Cruz, the evening of the -1st, irM., we have received fcs of Kl S1 de Anahuac, to the llOth, and 111 Arm Iris to the 21t instant, with an interesting letter from our correspondent Tar Mucket. The intelligence brought hither by the schooner is, in one point of view, of great imoortance since it announces that General
Scott's army had, at latest dates received from his, head quarters, rcacjicd i point within eight leagues! f the Capital, tt-itli apparently no opposition from the enemy At least so uc surmise from the paragraph whrdh, it relation thereto, we find in the Sol
de Anahuac of the 20th. It is to this euect : Later from Gex. Scott. A gentlemen arrived here this morning from the interior, brought intelligence
of the arrival of Gen. Scott, on th 11th iust., at!
Ayniia, eight leagues from the city of Mexico. He hus by this time no doult taken the copilal. We may therefore expect news every moment. Major Lally's Train. It appears that the train under the escort of Major Lally did not wait for the arrival of reinforcements sent out to him, on requisition, under the command of Captain Wells, Haile and Fa ire I) lid, but pushed on, and successfully resisted all the attacks of the guerrillas, passing the .National Bridge with comparatively little luv. The latest news from him is contained in the following, taken from the SU de Anahuac, of the 2t)ih: From Major Lally's Ti:aix. We have just learned that a Mexican who arrived this morning reports that the train had passed Cerra Gordo, unmolested. Retreat or the Apditionml Tr.ux. The rein-
f rcements sent to Major Lally, under the command , of Captains Wells, iliille and Fairchild, were not' able to overtake tint o dicer, through the overwhelm- ' ing guerrilla force brought in contact with them, al-i most from the instant of their march. The SU de Annhuic of the lth gives the following details of their operations : I A Train Returned. The small train, consisting of ten wagons and a quantity of mules loaded with ammunition, and oiher articles, accompanied by about 173 men, commanded by Captains Wells, Hade an j Fairchild, which left tins city last week, to re-inforcc j ..Major Lally's command, who were said to be in a very dangervus position, were attacked live times be- j fore they reached the .National Bridge, always driving the enemy before them. On arriving at that point,! which is strongly fortified by the Mexicans, who had J a piece of artillery with them, they were overpowered bv the number and the extraordinary strength of the position which the enemy occupied. j The first volley tired by the enemy, killed two-thirds 1 of our mules, and for many hours th.s little band of, Americans sustained the never ceasing fire of their: concealed enemies. But at last they had to retreat, which they did in good order, but with the loss (f nine wagons and all the mules, one waon bein" saved !
by the bravery and daring of the wagon master, whose name we neglected in the excitement of the moment tb ask. The lossof the Americans is said to be five killet! and two wounded ; that of the enemy is not known, ihjor Lally's train has not been heard from ; but
they have no doubt passed the bridge and gone on. tlinfT fVrm f ''.:.. t.... T.
vai.iil JJCS.IIK.UII ClHIlllia.UU. 11 IS supposed they are with Major Lally. The following are additional particulars from El Sol, of the 19ih instant : The train, from its smallness and the apparent embarrassments, has been ojen to more annoyance than any other train ever started for the interior. The
train was merely started as a reinforcement to Major J Lally, who, in his communication to Gov. Wilson, i stated that he would await its arrival this side, or at j the National Bridge. Major Lally was sunnlied with i
artillery and yet was obliged to call for aid ; for some cause he did uot await its arrival, but passed the bridge j
leaving the enemy again to fall in his rear, and intercept the rein forcemeat. The reitif irccinent commenced, i s fighting two miles beyond Santa Fe, and it continued on with nre or less skirmishing every day. At a bridge four milts this side uf the National Bridge, in a deep gorge,
Hanked by almost impassable heights thickly studded with chaparral, the guerrill is evidently intended to tak? the train and the command. A complete ambus-1 cade was formed, and allowing the train to advance! upon the bridge, a heavy fire was opened on the right, left, front and rear. Tiic cavalry under Caistaiir
Fairchild received the first fire, returning it with spirit, and he was fulbwed by the infantry ; all standing in position for several rounds, when the enemy was discovered in retreat, and were pursued home, with loud and hearty cheering. The night was too dark ftr continuing ntirsuif. and
the command, cavalry and infantry, "remained en-j trenched near the bridge, and awaited the return of j day. At three o'clock in the morning, the surround-1
in- i.c.-iiia were innen possession of by our men, on the right, left, front and rear, and at four the fighting commenced. Captain Haile's company fired" upon and charged the enemy on the left advance, and completely routed the attacking party, and -a division of Captain Fairchild's company charged in the rear, routing the enemy with some loss. Captain Wells's ro.npuny guarding the open passes and occasionally firing on the retreating enemy. The train was soon after put in motion, and moved on to the Natioinl Bridge, where they confidently expected to meet Major Lilly ; but who unfortunately for tins i:!!ant little baud, had passed, leavin ' this strong hold to be re-occupied by the infamous ored.

Ins reinforcement. Considering the great exposure of our men to fire from ambuscades and strong fort, it is almost a miracle they were not destroyed. The loss is, however, small five killed and wounded. Several of Captain Fairchild's horses were shot. The ambulance containing the mail, was saved by John Toher. formerly " f'- ... 11 . !. oi . 1 1 t r
