Jt They are worrying 31 r. Tyler at ti.c souih about j

jected.' The National Intelligencer, liavir; alluded ; iu me npency oi the lexas speculators m brin'iiif about that treaty a charge which our readers may remember was publicly made by Mr. Beuton at Iii time Mr. Tyler Las caused a long letter tu be pub - lished in the Richmond Enquirer, in which he says : " If any speculators in Texas sticks or landi ever counelled, much less impelled, me to action upon that su! jeet, I declare mjielf to be wholly ignorant of ihe fact. Certain Ii is mat I never owned a loot of Texas land or a dollar of Texas stuck in my life." V It is not Improbable that this is true. Jlr. Tyler though far from beiiifr himself scrupulou. was as often as otherwise the tool of men whose interested motives he had not the sagacity to penetrate. lie goes on to say that all that he considered in the matter was the good of the whole country, and adds : "Nor was it until I received authentic information that other nations weie exeiting all their titbits to induce a course of action cn the part of Texas, at war, ai I ütmly believe, with the permanent interests of the United Slates, that I gave direction to my lamented fnend, Abel P. Upshur, then Secietary of State, to bieak up and scatter to the Winds the web of their intrigues by a direct proposition for annexation. I advised with do one, consulted with no one, save him, in taking Ihe initiative. I knew 'no holders of stocks or owners of lands in the matter." He further eay, that until the preliminaries of the treaty were arranged he has no reason to believe that the holders of stock or owners of land knew any thin j of what was goin on, the strictest secrecy having been enjoined. The Richmond Vhi answers Mr. Tyler thus: "Does he not know that at least two mcmbeis of his cabinet (Secretaries Upshur and Gilmer) were very large landholders in Texas, and that they strongly and incessantly urged this meaure ? And we have heard from we believe an entirely authentic source thit they encountered no little difficulty in overcoming Mr. Tyler's own objections to the scheme, at the suggestion of which he was at fust startled. Is it not also true that several other gentlemen, largely inter ested in Texas lands and scrip, not members of his cabinet, whose names can be given if it hall be deemed necessary, were in constant communication with hi.n ou the subject ?" As to the secrecy observed in this affair, Mr. Tyler appears to have been under a singular hallucination, for the Richmond print asks : - How happens it, we beg to know, that on the 2Sth of March, nineteen days b fore the fact was publicly promul gated in Washington, Mr. Dotts, in a public speech delivered at the Club House in this city, proclaimed that such a treaty was in progress, and denounced both the scheme and it authors? We can tell the Ex-Tresident : for while we are writing, Mr. Butts has stepped into our office, and we have inquired of him by what lutky chance it was that he had been made acquainted, so long in advance of the public, with the secrets of the Tyler Cabinet? And he iufoimed us that the fact was communicated to him by a laige Texas landholder and stock-jobber, not a member of Mr. Tyler's Cabinet, nor filling any other public station, but who, he had eason to believe, was in constant personal iuteicouise with that Cabinet on that subject." The speculators in Texas stocks were taken care , of in the treaty. It provided for the payment of the full amount of their claims, for which many of them J'ld -P-iCrd very little. As to tire Texas lands, the owners expected ijf course a large rise in the value of their property. JY. Y. 1'ost. What wocld the Whigs do? The whig are very much given to prophesying. They cannot quit it, although a fulfilment of one of their prediction, would be almost a miracle. Suppose, now, they should, most unfortunately for themselves, get the power to control this government, and were called upon to manage our relations with Mexico; and suppose, further, that they had any regard for their own country, and their own consistency. Let us see what they would do. First, withdraw the army back to the Itio Grande no, lo the Nueces. I'ut Mexico woulj contend that her territory extended to the ivrbine. What would stultified whiggery say ? Could not Mexico show to the full alrsfaction of all the world that the wrong done her in annexing Texas had been acknowledged in the most ample manner by the universal whig party ? Well, the army must come back to the Sabine, or pay the price of Texas to Mexico, or our country must be officially branded with acknowledged knavery. This matter being settled, Mexico demands indemnity for the accursed war, the numerous murders, the enormous expenses incurred, &c. The three millions would be needed to propitiate Santa Anna, and how many million more would repay Mexico for what she has suffered and expended? We should like to see a committee consisting of Prentice, Corwin, McGanghey, Gidding., iVc, prostrate before Santa Anna, kissing his wooden leg, imploring his forgiveness for injuries acknowledged to bf (lark and damnable. Would not the scene bo a rich one? It is very preposterous to suppose that the whig? would do this, some may think. Perhaps it is. It is preposterous to suppose that they would do right. If the ground they have assumod be correct, they are bound by every principle of justice to make the most humble confessions to Mexico and the world ; and if they will not do it, they must proclaim to all mankind their utter destitution of all moral principle. They must have the brazen effronterey to persist in a wrong the darkest and most accursed that the world has ever seen at the same-time refusing to make reparation. If it were not too serious a matter for .the honor of the country, it would be amusing enough to see the whig party get the power they want. Louisville Democrat. . Divorce of flic Government and the Hunk. The official statement published by the Treasury Department, shows the amount of money in the scveal depositories of the rrrovernment, and subject to draft on the 21th ultimo, to have been Ä7,(M,810 50. Of this there was at Boston 1,050,4:33 37; at New York. $v.G13,153 81 ; at Philadelphia, S-2,-0,900 50 ; at New Orleans, $172,203 20. The New York Evening Tost in copying thia statement, in detail, very well observes : It will be seen by the above statement that the divorce of Bank and State is complete. There are no deposits of the United States in any Bank in the country which are subject to the draft of the Trea surer. Some sums yet remain in the Banks for which drafts have been issued, but the money has not, it appears, been as yet taken out. Never was the Treasury of the United States in a more impreg nable position. It is beyond the reach of all those influences which Banks and Bankers use, in order to make a profit. And we may well say never were ' the United States so independent as on this day. 'Much credit is due to the officers from our State for advhin the soldiers to retain their land, and not let the proceeds of their hard service go to enrich the speculators. General Lane advised the soldiers to keep their land and not sacrifice it, when they could dispose of it on much better terms in their own State. Colonel Drake, in his address to the olTiocrs and solrjiers of the 1st Regiment, says: . ' ' "I will here suggest to those who have claims upon the United States for bounty land, the propriety of retaining them. It has given ine much pain since our arrival at this place to eec soldiers offering and selling their claims, which they have so honestly and faithfully earned, at from seventy to eighty dollars making a sacrifice of at least $120. i hope at least you wiil not dispose of your claims at this time.
