Gas Blown out. A Jettef from Charleston, Kanawha county, published in tb Richmond Compiler, states thai the inflammable g&s which has rendered that region bo remarkable, Iia4 bhxrn out, and does not flow. The writer sys : The Licks, as the salt region is callefl, are divider! into the upper and lower districts. In the upper district appeared those astonishing columns of gas, si often noticed in the papers. So long; as the gas continued to rise, there was no want of salt water, but when it was exhausted the water disappeared with it ; and in some instances the proprietors have abandoned their furnaces. The better opinion here seems to be that the gas appears only when the stratum of rock, which bad hitherto furnished the saline water, had been bored entirely through, and the adventurers had come upon a limestone formation for pieces of stalactite were thrown to the sr.rfa.ee by the column of gaa : and it is said that the water could be distinctly heard dropping and trickling down the sides of the rock to a great distance, possibly finding a channel ia one of those deep chasms which are always to be found in limestone rock. However this may be, it is certain that the supply of salt water in those gas wells was not exhausted bt-cart,e there was no gradual diminution of the quantity while it continued to flow ; but it suddenly disappeared entirely, and simultaneously with the gas. In spite of this failure, which extends throughout the upper district, (w here there has been the deepest boring,) and which could not be anticipated and cannot be remedied, it is thought that three millions of bushels of salt will be shipped down the Kenawlia during the year much more than is consumed by the w hole Slate of Vir ginia. Notwithstanding1 the vast agricultural as well as mineral resources of this valley, the reckless improvidence which suddenly acquired wealth generally induces, has followed it here, and strange as it may seem, all the flour consumed here is brought from Cincinnati ; three hundred miles otF ; and, at the present writing, with 10,000 acres of the richest bottom land in Virginia at their doors, there is not a barrel of flour for sale in the place. Philosophical Effects of Stimulants. A love of temporary excitement, as has been said, is tho prime cause of indulgence in intoxicating liquors; and as this excitement promotes a flow of friendly feelings, the practice of drinking has become engrafted for ages on the social usages of the country. The appetite for indulgence in akholic liquors, it may be observed, has always small beginninrrs. The taste is not natural, but acquired. When once besrun. howevery repetition and appetites which are necessarily insatiate, since they crow with what they feed upon." A habitual love of stimulants thus becomes a blind and ungovernable impulse the desire possessing all the character of an unconquerable passion ; he who is under it can scarcely be called a rational being. Knowing, perhaps, that what he does is wrong, he still does it. The man in this state of hallunication, whatever be his errors, is less an object for a prison than a lunatic asylum. Interesting and Novel. Some workmen engaged in excavating for the enlargement of the church at Bcrthiar ed haut, had in the course of their work to remove several coffins, and while doing so came to one which was found of unusual hardness, and apparently made of strange material. Striking ir, it split into pieces and disclosed a body within, in a most perfect state of preservation. The neighbors were summoned to the spot, and the body examined, when it was discovered tobe most perfectly petrified ! :It was at once removed, and placed in a dwelling in the neighborhood, where it still remains end has been: seen by 6bme friends of ours. One of the hands is wanting and a part of the neck. A toe and a portion of the nose were either broken off during the first examination of the curiosity by persons striking it, of during the removal. The nails are perfect on the fingers that still remain, but the hair has entirely disappeared. The remains are those of a Mrs. Moni son, who died about twenty years ago, and Mas bnr ied beneath the floor of the church. A small running stream passed beneath the coffin, and of course to its effects this singular preservation of the corpse and coffin are to be traced. Quebec Mercury. Ecrxt Rhubarb in Diap.eiicea. It may be useful to know the value of burnt rhubarb in diarrhoea. It has been used with the same pleasing effects for more than twenty years. After one or two doses the pains subside, and the bowels return to their natural state. The dose is from five to ten grains. The manner of preparing it is to burn rhubarb powder in an iron pot, stirring it until it Hackens ; then smother it in a covered jar. It loses twtf thirds of its weight by incineration. It is nearly tasteless. In no case has it failed where given. It may be given in port wine, milk, and water: . Nail Business. The amount of nails made in the United States is estimated to be fly thousand tons! Forty thousand casks, or four million pounds of nails are annually made by the Boston Company, at the Mill Dam. Estimating the number of nails at 1G0 to the pound, the number here made daily, will be about two millions; and estimating this number to be but the 2öth part 6f those made in the United Statcs,y millions are made, sold, and used every day ! .
