Brno ix his CoFff A correspondent if the At-i laa, furnishes a very interesting chapter, from which
w rftake thd fullowin?; extract of inr Edward it lay in state for two days, .nd was visited by. Titindreoä et persona who paid their last tribute to the ccmui of the mighty Biucnberer, by gaz itS on his codin-lid. Afar the laying in state had terminated, it was found necessary to move the body, for the Purpose of niacin? it in a belter constructed ltaden efäfün than that which bad been prepared in Greece. A fripnd of mine happened to know the un dertatcr, and kindly offered to procure me admission to the chamber where the removal of the body was to be tffected an offer which, I need not say, I gladly accepted. Accordingly, on the afternoon of the Ulli of July, I proceed-! to Sir Edward Knatchbull's and found three or four gentlemen, attracted thither, like myself, to witness the solemn face of the poet, for the last time, ere it should be shut up in the .darkness of 'death. Mr. Rodders, the author of the "Pleasures of Memory," Mr., now Sir John Cam Holhouse, and John Hanson, Esq., (the two laVter Lord Bj-ton's executors,) and one or two others, whose names I did not learn, were present. The body lay in the dressing room, on the first story, which wis hnnrr with black cloth and lighted with wax candles. Si in after mv arrival the work of opening the coffin commenced. This was soon effected, and when the last covering was removed, we beheld the lace of the illustrious dead "All ci M and all serene." Were I to lhe a thousand years, I should never, never forget that moment. For years I had been intimate with the mind of Byron. His wondrous works had thrown a charm around my daily paths, and with atl the enthusiasm of youth 1 had almost adored his rreniim. With his features, through the medium of paintings, I had been familiar from my boyhood ; and now far more beautiful, even in death, then my most vivid fancy had ever pictured, there they lay in marble repose. The body was not attired in the most awful of all habiliments a shroud. It was wrapped in a blue cloth cloak, and the throit and head were uncovered. The fbrmar was beautifully moulded. The head of the poet was covered with short, crisp curling locks, slightly streaked with gray hair?, csfrciolly over the temples, which were ample and free from hair, as we see in the portraits. The face had nothing of death about it it was neither sunken nor discolored in the least, but of a dead, marble whiteness the expression was that of stern repose. How classically beautiful Wai the curved upper lip and chin. I fancied the nose appeared as if it was not in harmony with the other feiture; but'it might possibly have been a little disfigured by the process of embalming. The forehead was high and broad indeed, the whole head was extremoly large it must have been so, to contain the brain of such capacity. Cut what struck mo most was the exceeding beauty of. the jrofde, as I observed when the head was lilted, in the operation of removing the corpse. It was perfect in its way and seemed like a production of Thidias. Indeed it fir more resembled an exquisite piece of sculpture than the face of thfj dead so still, so sharply defined, so marble like in its repose. I caught the view of it but Dr a moment, yet it wa loii enough to Lave it stamped upon my memcry as A thing cf beauty," which poor Keats tells us is "a joy forever." It is indeed a melancholy joy to have gizcd upon the face of the poet. As Washington Irving snys of the old sexton who crept into the vault where buakspeare was entombed, and there behold the dust of tes : "IV was something even to hiva seen the dust of Lyron." Married Life. 44 Deceive not in small things nor in great. One little single lie, has, before now, disturbed a whole married life. A small cause has often great consequences. Fold not the arms together and sit idle. Laziness is the Devil's cushion. Do not run much from home. One's own health is of more worth than gold. Many a marriage, my frier-d3, begins like the rosy morning, and then falls away like a snow wreath. And why, my friends ! Because the married pair neglect to be as well pleasing to each other after marriage as before. Endeavor always, my children, to please, one another ; but at the same time keep God in your thoughts. Lavish not all your love on to-day, for rclrcmber marriage has its on tomorrow, likewise, and its day after to-morrow too. Spare, as one may say, fuel for winter. Consider, my daughters, what the word wife expresses. The married women is her husband's domestic faith ; in her hand he must be able to entrust her to the key of his heart, as well as tne key ot his eating room. Hia and his' home are in her keeping his well being is in her hand, Think of this ! And you, sons, be faithful Lusbands, and good fathers of families. Act that your wives shall esteem, and love you. Miss Bremer. The fMestion of Free trade is not a mere question of doTfars arid cents between this class and that class. It assumes a broader and nobler bearing. It is connected, with the great movement of nations towards a condition of higher civilization and refinement. The policy of edrnnicrcial restriction is the old policy of I barbarism, and let its advocates preach as long and as they may they might even show that it was for the advantage of a particrlar nation yet the deep instincts of the human mind, every day struggling for free institutions in the state, repel the narrow and selfish sentiments upon which It is founded. No principle of natural reason is clearer, than that which asserts that God has adapted the nations ot the earth to a constant and unrestricted intercourse with each other, by which alone the varied blessings of existence are widely and equally distributed. Commerce may be compared to the circulating system of the human body. It cannot be obstructed in any part without palsying or convulsing more or less the whole economy. jv. y. Poet. A Valid Ministry I go to church to be convinced of what is true, and be warned with love of what is good ; and he who thus helps me is a true minister, no matter from what school, consistory, or cclesiastical body he comes. He carries his commission in bis -onl.' Do not say that h!a ministry has no validity, because Rome, or Geneva, Lambeth, or Andover, or Princeton, has Dot laid hands on him. What! has he not opened mine eyes to see, and roused my conscience to reprove 1 As I have heard hitn, has not my heart btrrned within me, and have I not, silently, fiven myself to God with new humility and love! lave I not been pierCed by his warnings, and softened by Bis looks and ton?s of love ! Has he not taught and helped me to deny myself, to conquer the world, to do good to a foe ! Has he done this, and yet has his ministry no validity 1 Clutnning: The Etes of Insects. How wonderfully constructed is this beautiful organ of insect vision ! How admirably adapted" to the necessities of insect life ! The gaudy dragon My, presenting, as he does, such a conspicuous and tempting show of colors to the active swallow, eludes the feathered enemy by superior agility of flight. "Mere agility, however, woulJ avail Rothinj vilhcct the aid of powerful eyes. Accordinly, nature has g'rven him somewhat more than twelve thousand bright and piercing ones, some looking upwards, some downwards, some backwards, and some on either side. In the antsj there ai'e fifty of these laces or eyes ; in the horsefly, lour thousand ; in butterflies, upwards of seventeen thousand three hundred and fifty-f te have been counted, nay, in some coleopterous err sca?7-winged insects, there have been numbered no less than twenty-eight thousand and eighty-eight. Polytechnic llstiew. . Girls, beware of transient young men!1 Never suffer the address of a stranger.- Kecollect that one good farmer's boy, or industrious mechanic, is worth mors than all tSe floating trash in the world'. The allurements of a dandy Jack, with a gold chain about his'ttckv a walking wick in- his paw, a three penny cigar in his mouth, somfe horrtst tailor's coatoh his back, and a brainless though fancy skcll, never can make op the loss of a good father's' home.I.vdiana PE.viTt.NTiARr. A discourse was delivered on Sunday morning la?t, ijr" the- I'enitenfiary at Jeffersonville, by a Baptist clergyman; After sorfmv forty odd of the convicts, apparently unguarded, accompanied the minister to the .water, where one of their number received the rite of baptism.
