How simply and beautiful lias Abd-el-Ivadir, of Uiiion, impressed us with the love of truth in his childhood. After describing the vision which made him entreat of his mother to go to Bagdad, and devote himself to God, he thus proceeds: "Informed her of what I had seen, and she wept; then taking out eighty dinars, she told me I had a brother; half of that was all my inheritance; she made me swear when she gave it to me, never to tell a lie, and alterwards bade me farewell, exclaiming "Go, my son, I consign thee to God; we shall not meet until the day of judgment." "I went on well, till I came near llamandnai, when our Kalillah was plundered by sixty horsemen. One fellow asked me 'what I had got 4Furty dinars said I, 'are sewed under my garments.' The fellow laughed, thinking," no doubt, I was joking with him. 'What have you got." said another;! gave him the same answer. When they were dividing the spoil, I was called to an eminence where the chief stood. "What property have you got, my little fellow.'" said he. "I have told two of your people already," I replied; "1 have forty dinars sewed in my garments 1" "He ordered them to be ripped open and found my money.' "And how came you," said he in surprise, "to declare so openly, what had been so carefully concealed ?" "IJecäuse," I replied, "I will not be false to m mother, to whom I have promised I will never tell a iie!" "Child," said the robber, "hast thou such a sense of fluty to thy mother, at thy years, and am 1 in-eiiiiio at mv aire, of the dutv 1 owe mv God? Give me thy hand, innocent boy,"hecontinucd,"that I may swear repentance by it." "He did so. His followers were all alike struck with the scene." "You have been our leader in guilt," say they to their chief; "be the same in the path of virtue." "And they instantly, at his order, made restitution of their spoil, and vowed repentance upon his hand." Tlir. PekiouXCAL P 1112s. The Jnmwtown (Chautauque) Journal publishes a lecture, delivered as onefof an academic course, by 1). Sherman, Esq.; which gives an interesting history of the Periodical Press, derived from authentic sources, and exceedingly well presented: The first newspaper was issued (in manuscript) at Venice, in 15b'.5, and was called the "Gazette." The iirst printed newspaper was published England, in 15mS, called "The English in Mercury, Imprinted by Her Majesty's Printer." This paper was not regularly published. The first periodical newspaper was published at Frankfort, Germany, in 1G1J. In 16121, the "Public Intelligencer and London Gazette" was established. Soon afterward-;, various papers "hail their entrances ami exits" in London, among which were, "The Scots Dove," "The Parliament Kite," "The Secret Owl," tec. "The Spectator" was the first purely iitrrary journal. It appeared in 171 1. This publication, a it is known, owe its immortality to Addison. "The Tattler" conducted by Sir Richard Steele, though published a short time previous, was not exclusively iiterary. The first French newspaper was published at Pari-;, in 1G.51, by Uonaitdot, a physician. The first "Literary Journal and Review" ever published was "77c Journal des Satans" commenced in 1(j., in France. There are now published in France 750 journal-', of which, '.!( are political. The first American paper was the"Ioston News Letter," which appeared on the 21th of April, 1719. "The Huston Gazette" was started soon after. The third American newspaper was the "American Weekly Mercury," which appeared in Philadelphia on the 2'Jd of December, 1719. The fourth American newspaper was the "Xew England Courant," established at Boston, August 17, 1721, by James Franklin, elder brother to him who rendered the name so illustrious. Hoot ani rancii. Snrsili, Duchess of larlhornuh, v:i- accustorncil to fjivti an annual least, to which .she invited all her relation-, inanv of whom were expectant lt-ya-tees in case of her demise. At one of thee family gatherings, slie exclaimed, in allusion to the numerous progeny and decendanls, "What a glorious siht it is to see such a numlier of UraiwUexJlHurishiiix from the same root!' Alas,M sighed .lac!; Sponcer, to a first cousin next him, "the branches would Jlourish far better if the root were under ground !" Pko.motio.ns. The late Sergeant Onslow, Streant-at-lnr) was one day changing horses at the White Hart, Kyegate, when the landladv persisted in addressing the learned coun-efas "Captain." The learned gentleman's servant corrected her on each occasion in aside whisper. "He quiet," said she, with a confidential wink, "1 know he is only a ergeant, but them 'Sergeants' always like to bewailed 'Captains."' ltmdoii Piipcr.
