R'pott from Standing (' m-tit'ee$. Mr. Mürphey fiom the Judiciary committee, repotted back the hi!! in relatio. t the Probate Couits of Uenty county; read ihe thiid time and passed. Mr. Loan fiom the same committee renoited against t' p expediency of amending certain sections of Ihe Beviscd j Statutes; concurred in. A message was leceived from the House bv Mr. Kinder ' me Lifin, requesttpg me concurrence of the Senate, w ho b was Resolved, That the House will adjourn sine die, on Monday, the 19th instant, the Senate Ctawertitg therein. Mr. Harbour fiom the committee on Federal Relation, reported a j int resolution en ttie subject of the Cumberland' road; passed M the second reading. Mr. Buell from the same committee repotted back the joint resolution on the subject of the Oregon icuitoiy, amended by striking out all after the word wheieas.and inserting the following : Whereas the liberal prop isit ions repeatedly made by the Government of the United Statte, to settle the Oreg n boundaiy que' ion, have mamlecd an earnest deiie, on their part, to pre-erve peace and avoid war ; and Whereas, Piesident Polk , actuated by the ame motives of liberality, has renewed the proposition to grant the Butish (lovernment all of aid teuitory noith of the -TJth d giee tf north latitude ; which has again been rejected by the British Minister at Washington, thereby clearly showing a ileteimination on the part of the Biitih Goveininmt not to negotiate or compiomise upon terms that would be just ai d houoiable to the people of the U ailed StatesBe it resolved bv the Senate and House of Representatives te the State of Indiana, that we heartily respond to the sentiment contained la the Mesoagc tf Ibe Cbiaf Magistrate tf I this nation in relation to the teuitiry of Ortgoa, and the American citizens therein, and t'iit his piompt withdrawal of all propositi us further to negotiate under the circum-tan-ces, merits the approbation of the people of this Srare. And it is farther i"s Ived, That in the opinion of this General Assembly the L uited States have the best right to the whole of Oiegoo. R'solved, Tha the Secretary of State is hereby direcfe 1 to forwaid a copy of tail j int ieolutun to our BcBmtotf and Reptesentatives in Congress. Mr. Morgan of I wished to know fiom the Senator from Dearborn his reason for declaring that "all of Oregon is ours." Mr. Buell said he had not the documentary evidence with him that he could produce, but he could ere the authonty of the Hon. John Q. Adarns, w hich would be accepted by the Senator. He is clearly of the opaaioB that Greet Britain has no right whatever to anv pait of Oiegm. Mr. Read rose and said in addition to what the Senator from Dearborn had said he would quote the veiy language of the statesman he referred to. M Oieg n " he says - is ouis by discovery, by occupar cy an l by pauchaae.1 Mr. Eilis thought the Senate w as IfoeMJCCediltg tbeir dii'y. At least policy, he thought, would d.ctate a different COOIM at present. From the latest intelligence we are informed that negotiation has been renewed w.th tbe prospect of a happy teimiuation. Senatois should bew.ie beer they proceed at this junctuie, and not H the le ist if poible hotel i opt the harmony of our rela ioits or fctttettasa wtien pacific feeliugs are about to prevail. Mr. E. then moved to amend the amendment by stiikirg out all from tne resolving cla ie and in-ert in its place ne he submitted, which Was the same he pieviously introduced and has been alreidy published. Mr. Morgan or I), moved to indefinitely p stponc the icsoluttoo and pending ameadmei ts ; not agitedto, ayes 17, nucs 30. The Senate then refused to adopt Mi. Kilis's amendment, ayes 21, noes 29. Mr. Orth tuen introduced an amendment to the amendment, ' as follow s : And be it further Reolvd, That as the committee on Federal Relation m this Senate has just reported thit the whole of Oregon is ours, Thertfjre be it Jtattftei, lint our Senators in Congress be instruttel and our Repstttatatitei be requested, to oppose any compromise svbeteby we shall lose a single foot cf American territory. Mr. Montgomery moved to lay the reatfatfoa anl amendments on the table, aes 17, ues 30 Mr. Orth's amendment w.o then adopted, ayet 29, noes 18. Mr. Handy thought this amendment would make toe no tation appear lidicul u. He voted w ith the aaajoriUr and woull therefoie move to reconiide: the vote adopting the amendment. Mr. Barbour sai l the amendment was in the light spirit. He congratulated Mr.it. oo so eheeung a display ef patuotim. He did not regaid the amendment but With 1 nor, and behoved it was prompted by the aaaa h ly an4 patuotic lee -ngs. No ene hould object t the Sentoi's manifesting hi loyalty to his country in his own way. Mr. Handy then withdiew the m Aien tn rocoaiider. Mr. Coffin said he could not vote for tM preolvtiot). He could not endorse the raagwaft of Piesident Polk ia h; Inauismal Ad.iiess wheie he declaies that our title to Oie'U is clear an I lndispu'atoie, an.i men in ins iesD . - . He never was an admirer of that cUss of poUticiaos w ho h ive no settl. d opinions beings of tunsuht r v.'.cr than of rcsijii. Jsuch conduct should be c.nured and repudiated instead of approved and lauded by this Senate. The excu-e that some Senators offer for this disreputable inconsistency, that a compiomise vu proposed at the taHb degree aorta: latitude, f;o;n respect to piecediu;; idminatlistioui. is t miterablt soblctfttgs to conceal the odium that Ihe PlBlidenll inconsistent and uotatemanlike course m ist excite. Mr. Akin sud he was not w.ll.n th.t rrriletit Polk's opinions should alone be end'ised by the Senate. Other Uieal men should have the benefit of our approbation. He would there fore move the following amendment : And be it further Resolrel, That this General Assembly do heartily concur in the sentitnen's of the II on. Ilemy flay, which were eapre-ied in his instructions to the Hon. Albert, Gallatin, in which he says " that England hs not the tolor of a title to Oregon an' that our title is clear and indisputable." Notw.thslaiiuiug Mi. Clay did instiuct .Mr. liailatm to I accept of the 49th deg.ee 40 min. no.tii latitude as an adjustmeat of that question, ar.d theiefoie be it tesolved, kc. Mr. Coffin said he hopod this amend nent would not prevail. It would make Mr. Clay appear to have exhibited himself in as ridiculou a light as President Polk. Mr. Akin said he introduced the amendment i a good faith, j but if it was not acceptable to Mr. Cray' friends he Would withdraw it; and it was accordingly withdrawn. Mr. Morgan of D. introduced an amendment, as follows: And be it further Resolved, That this General Asser.it v canaot understand why Piesident I'jlk offeierl ta compromise , at the 49th degiee, aft. r he had picvi .u-.ly declared our title lo be clear and indisputable. The amendment was laid on the tabic by motion of Mr. Handy, ayes 2H, noes 19.
