An intelligent citizen of Georgia, who has been examining the Southern portion of Florida, gives the following graphic picture of it, in a letter written at Tampa Ray on the 22d of July last : The productions of this peninsula are by far the most valuable in the United States, not excepting Louisiana nor the new State of Texas. Its main staples will be sugir. Sea Island cotton, Cuba tobacco, and oranges ; and in all these, there is no other State in the Union that can compete with it. The best lands here yield (owing to the tropical character of the climate) at least twice as much sugar to the acre as the best lands in Louisiana. In Louisiana one thousand p unds to the acre is a good average crop ; in East Florida the average crop is two thousand rive hundred pounds, and as tnu?h as four thousand pounds have been produced oa an acre ! Sea IIand cotton of the best quality grows in every portion of the peninsula, and the tobacco and oranges of East Florida have already become celebrated for their superiority. Besides main staples, numerous other tropical productions flourish here, which it would be tedious to notice. The ranges for cattle and hogs in this peninsula are inexhaustible, and the whole country is already begining to swarm with both. Cows, I am informed, produce a calf here every year, and never require to bo fed or housed, winter or summer. The woods everywhere abound in leer and turkeys, and other game, and there is not probably in the world such a country fur fish. Every like, river, and creek in the interior, and the whole coast, 100 milts in extent, teem with the finest fish, and there is scarcely a point on the whole coa.t where the finest oysters and turtles cannot be found. Turtle is, indeed, within reach everywhere ; on the coast the green turtle is inexhaustible, and the lakes in the interior abound in sott shell turtle which is still more delicious. To give you some idea of the abtinttan :eof fish in the waters of Florida, I shall state a fact which occurred here yesterday ; eleven m?n were sent in a boat fr.nn this post to haul a seine at an island three miles distant. They brought home, after about f ur hours' abs 21120, 1,500 weight of red fish and cavall s, (ti-Ii of the most superior quality) after having thr .vn out of the seine more than five times that quantity of sheephead, drum, and other excellent fish, which they had not the means of transporting. Tuis, although a lih story," is nevertheless true, and not in the least exagerated. East Florida is well sm;d;ed with good water, as might be inferred by reference to its map, which presents a rcgulir distribution of numerous rivers and creeks. Toere is no new country in the United States in which t!i roads are so good and so nirni rous as in eist Florida. This is uwin" to the l.'vel character of the country, the porous nature of the s i.I and to the extern. vc operations of the nrmv. The geographical p is.tion of Flor. da, end the facilities of tranjorting its produce to all of the best markets, are superior to those of any other State in the Union. Tnc most distant point in the peninsula from navigation (either by s'.eamboat or keelboat) is not forty miles ; and its proximity to the West Indies as weil as to the best markets of the United States, gives it nuny advantages." Lake Ontario. The Cobourg (Canada) Star of the 1st ins, notices the phenomenon of the full and rise of water in Lake Ontario (to which we have before alluded) in the f dlowing terms : On Saturday last a most extraordinary occurrence was noticed in the lake at this place. Shortly before ivwn, some gentlemen walking 0:1 the wharf, happening to cast their eyes upon the water between the piers, were struck witli the very unusual appearance of a strong current or tide, as it were, setting directly out to sea. It eemcd as if the whole lake was going bodily away. In a few minutes nearly a third part -f the inner harbor, with a corresponding portion of the shore on either side, was left entirely bare, when suddenly the tide turned and came as rapidly hick again, filling the harbor at least two feet higher than it was before. This extraordinary action of the lake was continued at regular intervals of every eight or ten minutes till after dark, the highest tide noticed Lciiig a little before six in the evening, when the water rose seven inches higher than it was last spring, and just two feet and an inc above its present level. We understand the same thing occurred at other places on the lake, and hear that at Fort Hope the eifect was so great that the steamboat I'rinces Royal could not get into the harbor at ull, running hard aground when more tlnn her length ou'side tho entrance to the piers. The cause of so extraordinary a phenomenon is at present a matter of various c njecture, but the general opinion seems to be that it could only have been prhiced by a violent earthquake in some part of the continent, which we shall probably soon hear of. Masonic. A grand masonic festival is to be held at Steiubach, near Eaden-Raden, on the inauguration of the statu? of Ervin, a native of that place, whom l'J73 traced the plan of the Cathedral of Strasburgli. -All the principle lodges of France and Germany will be represented, and arrangements will probably be made for h ildingan annual .Masonic Congress, to meet alternitely in the two countries. Tue lodge of which Ervin was master, still exists at Strasburgh, and its records show that they made an emblematic use of the tojlsof their profession and had them emblazoned on their standards, with rniny emblems used by the crafi of the present day, among them the letter (x, the square and compasses united, and the level. The: craft were divided into apprentices, craftsmen, and masons, were received with ceremonies which were kept secret, and admitted, as alllicted brethren, persons who did not belong to the trade of masons. The place where they assembled was called llittc, which has the same meaning as the Latin world in iseri 1 ; they recognised each other by secret signs, and called the word das xcorlzeich'ix, and the token d-r grus. A Curious E::uor. A Western paper with great gravity stated that a large rat descending the Ohio, unfortunately struck against the steamboat Hurricane, und forced it on the bank, from whence it got oil" with great difiiculty. The readers of the above paragraph knew not what to make of it. I low a rat could produce such a singular effect upon a steamboat piu.led them not a little. Rut the next number solved the enigma, by tucking an into the word rat, thus protlilCitr' rtitt. A Wholesale ro:.ioEK. .Mil" Indianapolis, October 25, 18 1 Cousining. An Amusing Story. Oh! those cou sins, they are the "bewitchenisl" persons in the world. V e have just lit ur.on an old story that will, we think, please many cf cur readers. A gentleman went into the coach olHce at Utica, N. Y., and booked himself for a residence near Oswego. In the coach there was a beautiful girl. The gentleman thought of all persons he would like her for a travelling companion. To his great delight as the coach drove opto the door. ie found that she was a passenger, upon being ask ed where she would like to sit, she .said by tins genIcman, alluding to our hero. He felt much flattered, and thanked heaven that his personal appearance had captivated so charming a female. Smack went the whip, round went the wheels. The gentleman conversed with the lady, he found her free and easy, and from her agreeable manner, felt as if he had known her all his life. Evening closed in upon them. On rumbled the coach, joltingand jerking in arnost remarkable manner. It was an act of politenes, doubtlcss, on the part of the gentleman, to encircle the waist of his fair companion with his arm, just to keep her free from the jolting to which she would otherwise be subjected, lie did this with some timidity. To his surprise no objection was made to it. Encouraged by his freedom allowed as darkness had spread her sable veil over that portion of the earth on which the coach w as running, ho drew her to him and imprinted a kisi on her nectarian lips. The coach did not travel very quickly, but the enamored youth thought it Hew, when he found himself on the following day, within a f.w rods of his uncle's h(u-e. He told his fiir companion that thev miht shortly separate. Spoke of "here wc meet too soon j to part," and made use of many other romantic J speeches exprcss.ve of his deep regret at being compclled to sever so soon from one who had been as a bright and glorious sunbeam on his earthly pilgrim- j nge, and whose memory would live forever and a day j after, in his bosom. To his exceeding surprise, the young lady declared that he had been so exceedingly j kind tnat üiio would go with Iii:n to bis uncles house. He to!d her that he dared not take Mich a liberty. Tiiat he had been in Europe for some years, and that himself a stranger comparatively, to his uncle, he could not introduce a ladv, who was a stranger to him and Iiis relations. j Tie lady evinced hysterical symptoms: his arm' again encircled her wait arid the4r lips again owned a secret communion. The coach stopped". The gentleman had arrived at the end of his journey. He bade the ladv farewell. It was no go. She insisted on his protecting her. She got out of the coach with him, and followed him to his uncle's hou-e. He was in a dreadful state of mmd. However a pleasant kis in the dark was on the previous n'ht, the encumbrance of a petticoat vi such an oecasion, was any thing Lut satisfactory. He walked into the parlor, and, with what he conceived to be unblushing impudence, the lady followed. While he w as thinking how he could sssibly explain the atFair, he was welcomed by his uncle, and the young lady wa: welcomed too, and kissed by the family. She was his cousin. , On his entering the coach office at Utica, and booking his name and place of destination, she knew at once ' that he was her relative, and resolved to have a laugh ' at his expense ; and perhaps she did w hen she j told her stage coach adventure, and the fright into' w inch she put her cousin. What liberties they take ! , The gentleman was laughed at considerably, but let tho-e laugh who win. lie won h;s cousin, r.nd th'?y are now bone of one bone, and llcsh of one flesh. i A vr. xciiE, once Aventicum, the Roman capital of Helvetia, and m the reigns of Vespasian and Titus it contained (KMlO population. Now l, UO. It was destroyed by Attila, the King of the Huns, about the beginning of tiic fifth century. I stop here but half an hour long en )iign to see the remain- of the ancient Ko-nan wail tint surround d the town of Aventicum in some places, yet twelve feet thick, and as many higii. .Much of Aventicum is now meadow land and corn fields. I have read in Tacitus an account of a young Aventian priestess, named Julia Alpinula, whose father, in A. i). 01), was governor of this town, and who was doomed to death by the Komm General for an insurrection of the citizens against the Uouvms. The young priestess Julia in vy in besought the life of her father. He was executed, and the diughter died of a broken heart. Fifteen hundred years afterwards, the epitaph of that alfectionate diughter was found amid these ruins. An Engl.shuian bought it, and it is now removed. It is a beautiful, short epitaph in Latin. It is before me, and runs thus : "Julia AJpinula: I lie jaceo. Infehcis patris infcli.x prcles. Dea; Aventiam Saccrdos. Exorarc patns necem non pitui ; Male mori in fatis i!li erat. Vi.xi amos xx. lii." (I, Julia Alpinula, lie here : unhappy child of an unhappy father ; priestess of the god less Avenlia. 1 could not save my ft ther by my prayers. He wa fated to die ignominiouly. 1 have lived years.) Of th"; Hyion says with great f reo, "1 know no human composition so affecting as this; nor a history of deeper interest. These are the nam s and actions which ought not to perish; and to which we turn with a true and healthy tenderness, from a wretched and gl. tiering detail of a confused mass of conquest and battles, witli. wbirh the mind is roused for a time to a false and feverish .sympathy, from whence il recurs at length from all the ii an sea consequent on such intoxication." The cloc of the week, the Autumn of the year, the sunset of the dny and of life they are all beautiful seasons, and sjx.'ak to the soul a lanun o;c full of sweet pathos.
