Tbe eighth anniversary o! Marlon Lodge No. C01 Knights of Honor, which occurred at their hall, corner of Vermont and Mississippi streets, on Tatsday evening last, was a very pleasant affair indeed. The programme was long and varied. There were sixteen number?, which for the most part were well rendered. The salutatory, by Mr. Charles M. Crces, a member of the order, was appropriate and well chosen, and made a creditable stowing for the Lodge. Mr. Cross is a very mcdest gentleman but has keen sense of the proprieties, which he, ss master of ceremonies, clearly showed. Professor Ilibben was cert on the programme, and gave tome good eelections on the piano, in a manner very creditable to himself. Mr. Thomos EL Clapp, Crand Dictator of the State, then gave a carefully prepared address on the rise, progress and purposes of the order at large. The statistics which b.9 cited made a flittering exhibit for the "Knights," and must have been pleasing to the membership present. Altogether it was a "meaty" address, well delivered. Mrs. J. J. Cole, well known as one of the foremcst of Indianapolis' favcrite scloistf. then sang "When the Stars are Shining Bright" This carried the audience captive, and she responded to an encore with "No, Sir," a very gem of vocal humor, rendered in her happiest vein. A recitation. The Inventor's Wife," by Lianna Cohen, was a splendid thin ell rendered, and called forth a warm approval from the andiene. She responded with "How Girls Study." The Mendelssohn Qaartet Mr. Frank Ketcharn, Mr. Charles Evans, Mr. Marry Sickles and Mr. "Walter Evans wai tbe next number. These are excellent voices, which, with proper training, are destined tD brin hener upon their possessors. 'Tyramas and Thibe" was the title of a recitation by Miss LenaDntcher. The recital of this met with favor by tbe andiencs, althoagh your reporter was of opinion that the subject was not worthy of the fair candidate for elocutionary honors. A duet by Mrs. Ida 0. Scott und Mr. Frank Ketcharn came next. Mrs. Scott fcas a pleasing voice, and Mr. Ketcharn, it is enough to say, perhaps, is a member of tbe Mendelssohn Quartet, mention of which has already been made. They were at a disadvantage in not having an accompanist. Foilowicg came little Mabel Barrack with a recitation which, like tbtt of Hanna Cohen, was "A No 1." The keen comprehension of lh character of tbe piece, her easy manner auUnrerb dialect made bar thoroughly at horxe in entertainiüg 'B;g Sister's Bsau" as well as a favorite with the audience. A trio by the Winter Brothers, in plantation dialect, was not only amusing, but "jam up." Miss Minnie K. Pi ice followed with another recitation. The subject was good and the Terdeting modest and unassuming. Messrs. Neighbors ard Walker were down for a harp acd banjo duet, but for some cause failed to xcsron". Mr. Hngh Campbell then heaped honors nron himself In a recitation in the German dialect, which met with a hearty response by the audience. lie was called back, and in mpocs pave the "Daten Twins." Lie was indeed happy in both selections and execution. The closing cde by the societv was omitted, aod Darius Green and his flying machine, by a young man whose name your reporter unfortnnately did not learn, was tutstituted. There is little room in this piece for elocutionary dieplay, aud it should not belong to tbe repertoire of any one at all zealous for such honors. On the whole, the Ledge is to be congratulated, and, in the lsngusge cf "Kip," "may you live long and prosper, Indiana's Credit. Spetkingof Indiana's credit In the Ksst, Mr. Walter Stanton, the gentleman who recently purchased the State bonds, yesterday said to the reporter of an evening contemporary : "It is excellent none is better," said Mr. Etanton. "And she has floated thess bonds at better rates than any other State ever did. Indiana has the least debt, in proportion to her extent and population, of any State in the Union, and is in the best financial condition . Her debt is at present about $1,700,000, and the rate of taxation to pay tbe interest will only be about seven eighths of 1 per rent. Ohio has a debt of over $,- CCO, COO. I regard these Indiana bonds as gocd as Government bonds, and they are s considered In the East. Indeed, I thought to well or them that I have kept $50,000 of them as a private investment, and may jet keep more. Your State ha3 the reputation of being very carefully and economically managed, and Indiana securities will always jank bigb, Federal Court Work. The Federal Court Grand Jary will meet on Tuesday and remain in session till the lhtb. The District Court Jury will then meet and the parties indicted by the Grand Jury will be tried. Thre are quite a number of cases to be tried which are held over from last term. There are twenty-eight Federal prisoners now in jail in thi and other counties awaiting trial. Something over 20 witnesses have been so manned to appear before the Grand Jury. Alleged Wife Deeertlon. Frank Johnson, dealer in farming implements at 07 West Washington street, is in receipt of information which leads him to believe that J. S. Blunt, for some years past an employe in his business, has deserted his wife and hss appropriated about $l2-' of Mr. Johnson's money. Blunt boarded at SO'i North Fennsylvacia street, and his landlady is in receipt ot letters which indicate that be has deserted his wife. No cause is assigned. Prize Declamation. The exerciees in connection with the prize declamai ions of the Classical School were attended by a fair audaence at the Grand Opera House last night, and proved very enjojable indeed. The doclalmers were Ojcar Anderson, Harry Baldwin acd Robert Bryce, and the prizes were awarded to tbe first two, In tbe order of their names. The declaimers were followed by gymnastic exercises by pupils of the Girls' Classical 8ctnol. A flat Contradiction. We are creditably informed that certain wen'd ba competitors have represented to larties that we tend onr poods awaj from tbe city tobe made. We flatly contradict this statezctnt acd are prepared topror tfcat raid would-be competitors lied, both willfully and knowingly, aa it la a well known fact to all tailors that we employ more first clas workmen than any other tailoring establishment in tbe state. We court honorable competition in business, but ' when other merchants can not compete with ns by fair means and nte stich base and false methods, we apply to them the old proverb: "A 'irownin? man will catch at a straw." We are still here, have all our garments made here and guarantee fit and workmanship to be strictly first-data. e prices at which we sell marked on coeds in our show windows; that is what hurts our would-be competitors aod makes them rqrjeal acd lie.
