Prisoners Strike for Palatable Food. Ca.tioo, May I. Early ttils morning word tru received by telerhone that the Bride Well bad been converted into a veritable bedlam. The Amazon Hosiery Compiny employs most of the prisoners at te BriJe W'llt working them at knitting machines ind looms, and paying thirty-fire c?nts per day to the city for the servicei of each man. It. appears that in the afternoon 150 of tbe prisoners serving the Hosiery Company Btrnc tor better food. They all quit wjric to?fcther, YOine to not return to their places until Warden J'tlton had promiied to give them something palatable at well a digestible at their meals. For a time the men were threatening end bot for the prompt action ot the guards migit have worked serious havoc with the machinery, if indeed they hid not secured their liberty. After some parley ninety of the discontented convicts . went back to their labors. Stock Yard Bill senatorial Vote. xSraxsantLD, 111., May A bill of onBiderable interest to all stock growers in the ITorthwest has been paseed by the House. It ii a measure to regulate the charges ot the Chicago 8tock Yards for yardage, freight, Srain, hay and other articles famished, and to prevent extortionate and unjust discrimination. It provides, among other things, that tha Stock Yarda shall not receiye for yardage more than fifteen cents rer head for .horses, cattle and males, five cents for hoza and four cents for sheep, nor more than 50 per cent additional to the current market wholesale price for hay, straw, com or other atticlea sapphea by them for the sustenance of sich animals, and that sales shall be made by actual weight. The penalty for collecting higher rates or tmjtrit discrimination i a fine of not lew than ilOO nor more than $500 for a first oßense and not less than $V00 tior more than 1,003 for subsequent offenses. At present the yardage charge per head on cattle is fifty ceats and the other articles in proportion. In the joint Assembly twenty-three Senators and sixty-four Representatives answered the roll call. St. Louis, May 1 Governor Marmaduke, In reply to a letter from Colonel Morse, General Manager of the Stock Yards at Kansas City, asking him to cill a special session of the Legislature to take action regarding pleuro-pneumonio. says that hedoesnot conalder it necessary to do so, and asserts that the plague is row practically suppressed, that it has net at any time been outside of Calloway County, and that official reports fjusfc made by competent authority expre?s xne belief that the disease is confined within a radios of of eight miles of Falton, the point where it originated. The Governor farher Btates that every thing possible is baing done to extirpate the plague and saya he believes sufficient money wul be raised by private subscription, and that the disease will bs enlirely eradicated within thirty days. The tiovfrnor also thinks that other States have acted very hastily and unwisely in quarantining against Missouri, and says he has been strongly urged to retaliate azainst them but will not do so, and will continue to tise every means to suppress the plague and protect the interests of the State. While services were in prcgrees in the Friendship Baptist Church, this county, on Tuesday night, Mat thew Rtid and John Workman went to the church and called out Aaron Bryant, with whom they had previously had some dißicalty. When Bryant came out. Reid cursed him, kicked him and nourished a pistol in Lis face. Bryant declined to resent the as sanlt, and attempted to go back: into the church. The Grand Jury found a bill against Georgo Johnson for burglary. 3Ie plead guilty and was given one year in the Jetfersonvllle Trlfcn, William Brinnel plead guilty to the charge of grand larceny and was given two years in the same "hotel.'' The Franklin Bank of this city has been changed to the Franklin National Bank. Dr. Howard Thompson etarted last even ing or the Moscaleno Indian Agency in N. M . to which place he was appointed as Tost Surgeon Satctded by Hasslos. New Yokk, May 1. Edmund Bushman, aged seventy, was found hanging to a beam in the rear of the house in which he lived this morning. Bushman was tip to ten years ao a wealthy farmer. He owned an extensive farm in Orange County. He lost his means throuch speculation. Sines that time be has bf en living with a married daughter on Second avenue. PinsBi Ro, May 1. A Cumberland, Md., Chronicle-Telegraph special tajrs: The miners of the Cumberland region held meetings last night, at which committees wero appointed from each mine to meet the operators and endeavor to settle' all all grievances by the i)ih inst. If this effort fails they will, without doubt, strike, and will resort to lockouts to keep other labor from the region. This re qcest is for a restoration of the 50 cents per ton rate from which they were reduced last December. It was feared they would sinke io-dey, the operators having ignored th'r notices, but no serious suspension ocoured. About 2,009 miners are interested. Arrival of Yoqdj aSngliah Farmers. Montreal, May 1. Eighty -five joang English farmers arrived this morning and left by the Canadian TacHic Railroad to settle on land in the Northwest. They state that many more of their friends are to follow Immedi a'ely. Cattle shippers from Toronto and the West are trying to pet modiScations in freight rates on cattle from here to Liverpool. They allege that tbay will be C3tnpelled to stop exportation by this route and pive the preference to Boston uule3s tha charges are made equal. An Unprovoked Murder. Chattanooga, May 1. Yesterday afternoon, at Langston, Ala., a man named Hillian, a prominent farmer, while out walking, was approached by a man named Ward, whom he only knew by sight, and without a word Ward knocked Hillian down and crushed his skull with a stone. The murderer was captured, and it is thought was lynched last night. There ia no telegraphic communication with Langston, and nothing further can be learned. Chicago Boiling 11111 that Down. Chicago, May 1. A strike inaugurated at the South Chicago Rolling Mills yesterday by some ssventy farnacemen, pitmen and ladle liners has caused Doth the steel and rail mills to Bhut down in consequence and some 1.200 men are thrown out of employment. The strikers were receiving from 1.23 to ?1 ."0 a day for twelve hours' work, while last fall their pay was $2 a day for tea hours' work. They demanded an advance cf twenty-rive cents a day. Failures During the Week. New Yokk, May 1 The business failures occurring throughout the country daring the last seven days as reported to lt. G. Dun Sc Co,, number, for the United States, 130, for Canada, 1U; or a total of 203, as compared with a total of IG last week, and 222 the week previous to the last. There is a decrease in every section of tbe country, except in the South and in New York city where the Dumbers are somewhat in excess o! previous weeks. The Short-f helau Case. Nsw YotK," May 1. The trial ot Richard Short for the attempted assassination of Captain Thelan, in O'Donovan Rdsss's office, was continued here to-day. The court-room was thronged with people anxious to seethe principals and to hear the proceedings in thecaee. The selection of a jury was con tinned, and up to recess I p. m. eight jurors t bad been obtained. Wita eleven jnrors in the box the court adjourned uatii Monday. The "Tickers Restored. Chicago, May 1. The "ticker" ssrvice was partially restored this morning, the Board of Trade giving the market quotations for transmission to members of the board and accredited correspondents. The backet shops are without quotations, however, and, if the present arrangement holds, will be completely barred out. Took an Overdose of Morphine. Ppe&al to the Sentinel. WiNcnzsTEB, Ind , May 1,Adrow Hodge, of Deerfield, a small village north of here, committed suicide this afternoon by taking ar. overdose of morphine. Deceased wai about thirty-three years or age, and leaves a wife and two children. Shot and Instantly Killed. Colcmbcs, O., May 1 Riley Brown, aa ex-convict, shot John Shaffer, a stableman, tnis mornirg, killing him instantly. Several shots were exebaogad. Brown was wounded in the leg. There are now four British war thips in oort here, the Tenedoa, Fan tome, Alert and Bullfrog. Marder and Suicide. Macox, Ga., May 1. W. H. Jones, a locomotive engineer, shot his wife this morning and then killed himself. His wife can not pctsibly recover. Jones died instantly. Domestic troubles were the causes leading to the deed.
