THE FREE KINDEKGARTENS.

An Interesting ReileiT of the Work of the Schools By Mrs. Arabella C. Peelle, President of the Free Kindergarten Society. At the last meeting of the Free Kindergarten Scciety Mrs. Arabella C. Peelle, President, read the following interesting report of the irerkef the society from the time of its foundation to date. The charity is one that commends iUelf in etrocgest terms to the benevolent people of Indianapolis, to whoa the reading of the report will be of much interest, MRS. rEELJ.E'S KFI0f:r. It ia well sometimes to look back; not that looking back which proved so disastrous to one of our lex In olden time, nor yet mat ol which our tavionr troke when he aM, "No man, havin? put his hand to the plow and lookine back la fit lor the kingdom of God;" for I am confl lent that nevor for a rrotaent. even at these times when anxiety for the future bas prefsed most heavily upon u. has there been one of our number who would, if be could, bave undone the past and walked free frem the responsibility of this gTeat charity: bat let us now, at the cio?eof this, our first year, pauso to loo back over the LeM. reviewing briefly us work, and then, strengthened by the lessons of faith, patience, courage and hope it has taught us, turn resolutely and con&dently to the work before up. On the third Wednesday In April, 1S8I, we adopted a constitution and a name, committing ourselves fully to the free kindergarten work, and elected oncers lor the year. Our treasury was empty, but at the solicitation of our ladies, Kev. Dr. AJabaster kiudiy consented to deliver a course of three lectures for our benefit. These art lectures, from which the handsome of $100 was realized, will be 1od remembered as a means by which all were enab id to aa-ist a deserving chari ,r, and at the lane tirxe eenre to themselves jreemot-t instructive and enjoyable evenings. Jn the 23th of June articles of incorporation were filed in the ilicc of the Recorder ol Marion County, and bylaws adopted, and a few days later the contract with Mrs. E. A. Biaier. as buperlntendeut of K'nderrarten and Teacher of 1 ralnin? School, wasfealed. The training school for pupil teachers opened August 15, and in just two weeks from that date our first kindergarten was openel at the corner of West Market and Blackford streets. We had furniture for this school belonging to ui as tbe ChLdrens Aid society, but for ihe sscoad kicdergortec, opened ricpecmber 15, on Yandei imet, Jhere was some t hint; to buy. The Yonng People's Christian Temperance Union had previously supported a Email tcliool at tuis loint, which they (considering it bebt that all the free kindergartens in the city should be under one management) tcrne.i over to us, we purchasing their lurniture and supplies and adding thereto new furniture and material from time to time, as the increased numbers in attendance required. Uur Superintendent had space asL$nea her in the womn'sdetartment of the titate Fair, with a view to Introducing the system of kindergarten instruction more generally tbrougbout the iState, and had a class of children there from the Wet Market Stieet school during a portion of the days. This interruption, and the labor it entailed delayed the openiög of the colored school, on West Vermont street, until the 13th of October, but from tbat date to the present tine the three schools bave been in constant session, with the exception of two weeks during the holicUy, and even tten our Superintendent, teachers anl janitre s.68 were on duly one or more dayj at eacM school, preparing for and attending to the Christmas festivities. We experienced some dlfllcnlty In securing suitable rooms for our school. the houses and icoEcs are all stcall at the ro:: ts most favorable lor our work, and tue churcaes v pre reluctant to admit us. We succeeded, ho we vor, in overcoming all ditlicuUits and securing t.e rooms noueht In church and chapel, althou-a our teachers labar under the disadvantage of having to take doivn and put away all pictures, materials and illustrations dally, and the work of the jani tresses Is mere than doubled In having to move and romove. arrange and rearrange seats and furniture fcr til regular and special services held iu the churches. If we coula only have an endowment fuflicient to erect or purchase snail frame buildlegs of but one story, at the po;nt? where the greatest number of needy and neglected children could be reached, it would not only lighten the labcrsof teachers and ;anitresses and relieve us from the monthly rent bill, but add greatly to the el!'ectivenes of our worst by ciqine to it an Rir of perrjeanenceand tecurity not to q attained under present conditions; but the work is perhajnoi far enough advanced in Indianapolis to expect thfsyet. Our tiuperintendent's alary is 530 per month. For thia she contracted to grant us teu scholarships in her training school (the sessions of wnich are held afternoom), and devoted her mornings entirely to the care, supervision and teaching of free sindergartens established by our society. Mrs. Blaker's part of the contract bas been more than met. as she has fourteen teacher iu training for our work. but. owing n tLe financial depredion, our executive board thount it unwie to undertake the number of schools t first contemplated (five), and hare endeavored instead to Id crease the number of popilsin and extend the ii llnetce of the three etabilsiied. Three teachers ar constantly eng eed in each kindergarten, receiving for compensation free scholarships in the training ichool. The only additional expense we should incur in opening two more schools (after once supplied with furniture and material) would be rent, jani tress (55 pen month each), lunch for the children, which, owing to liberal donations of provisions, would not exceed $3.50 per monti et ch.and clothes for the destitute,thec3st of which sa comparatively small, as we buy material at wbolesalt and the sewing is all done by oar ladies at the weekly meetings: besides which we have many ball-worn and outgrown garments donated. Fuel I bave not counted, as the coal dealers of our iiy bave dealt so generousiy with us that we have expanded less than H for coal during the entire wiutir. The expense 'for furniture and material for th three schools has not exceeded 8107, t'lt the fur: itu'e being largely aecond-hand, was purct.Kd at reduced rates, and we had nearly enough furniture tor oae t chool from the Children's Aid socitty. Tne xpense ol newlv liirni6hin.ra kiucerparten for fifty pupils would be aoou; $j0 The lolltge Avenue Rink ompany Kindly consented to eetept tbe services of our society at their online the firt week In November, aud divldeo toe pre tits with us. From tais source we realized atout S'O. and by the clergy generally; and I am happy to say there baa been no dLicouragement from any source. In providing funds lor the coming year it has been thought advisable to solicit, as tar as practicable, monthly subscriptions. By this system we can beat estimate the work that may be safely undertaken for the year, while it is at the same time less burdensome to the giver. Several ef our ladica adrpted this method with the new year, and bave been paving from $l to $2 per month, and such a course I heartily approve, even though tbe subscription should not amount to more than five cents a month. The progress tfcus far made Is very gratifying, and I am sure we all feel fully repaid. Toe young and tender plant, when properly cultivated, bring forth beautiful flowers, whose fragrance and beauty increases our love for God, whose perfect cnaracter admonishes na to try to approximate his virtues. Is not tue kindergarten work an essential step in that direction? By it tne child is so taught that its body and mind are develor-ed. making it aelf-helpinr. while its scanners, morals and cleanliness ara ever guarded by the teachers; thus trained, the child's mird will become active for usefulness, while its self-resiect will kep It from the idle street and deter it from haunts of vice thus in Ied training tfce child in the way it should go. And as it grows older will not society be bettered, crime diminished and Cod more honored .' Such I belisve will be the rrsult ot our efforts In maintaining fe kinderpartens, aud that will be ample reward. And now ladies, for tie pleasure it haaglvea me to be associated with you in this nobla chanty and for tbe special honor conferred upon mer.syoar President during the first year ot our work. 1 avail myself of this opportunity to express to you. what I b8e ail the time foil, my sincere anl grateful thanks. Buffalo Bill's "Wild West." Next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, at the State Fair (J rounds, the famous Buffalo Bill "Wild West" show wilt exiblt. It has been greatly augmented since last seen here, and now contains twice the number of border attractions ever before exhibited in this city. We are assured by those who have 6een it the present season that it is all that is represented in its bills and pictures. Among the border celebrities with thia combination are W. F. Cody (Buffalo Bill); of whom we all know, Buck Taylor, king of the cowboys, Utah Krark and his Indian family, W. II. Tucker, of Koith Piatt, Seth Hathaway, the pony exnrc!s rider, Wime Bear, chief medicino man of the Wianebaeo Sioux, Bill Bullock. Fred Matthews, Captain i;ogardus and 60iia and a ho.-.t of others. There will te the famous stage coach scene, aud encngh other stirring lights o give us a fair idta of the wild West life. An exchanee from B,-ton speaks thus of "BUI" and his show: In response to an invitation frra Mr. Burke, the geaial manager ef tue "Wild West." about twenty n-pres-mta-tvesof the Br-stou pres. assembled M.r.day at the Herald oflice and were speedly conveyed ia landur.s to Beaton Park, which, this week, presents the apparance of a W estern 1'ralrie. A rib rcest was herved in true Indian 6tyle, pointed siakts served for both plaio and tahle. Th9 party were escorted over the encampment after dinaer aD1 introduced to the various celebrities. No lover of the human race, no man with an eye for the picture que, but must bave enjoyed the very sight of these pioneers of civilization. Never was a finer picture of American manhood presented than when BuSalo Bill stepped out to nbow the capabilities of the Westeru teamster's whip. Tall beyond the lot of ordinary mortalf. stialght as an arrow, not an ounco of useless hsh upon his limbf, -but every muscle firm and hard as the sinews of a stag, with the frank, kindly eye of a devot d friend, and a natural courtly grace of manner which would beromea Marshal of France, Bufialo Bdi is from spurs to sombrero one ol the finest types of manhood this continent has eer produced. Those who bave expected to meet the clas of men usually engaged in the circus or variety business must have been pleasantly surprised In these veouine sons of the plains, every on? of wW :-i was stamped with the natural cny grace ari: ' ry of manner which marks the man who is ' i '! a gentleman. The c " et is one of the best entertainmeuts evtr giv- h re: the programme 1 as accurate as a pbotogT. ii of Western life, including an Indian attack upon a stage coach, herdin? of cttle, an elk hunt, horse noes, and some most marvelous exhibitions of riding and shooting. It is worth a trip to thi prairies to Pt-a the hooting ol Captain Bcgardusor the riding of Bul'Uo Bill. Gasoline Explosion. A. J. Moore, residing at 311 College avenue, had a band badly burned yesterday evening by the explosion of a gasolioe can, from which he was pouring tb 11 did. The department was called to his resHsnc0, bat beyond the injuries received by Mr. Mosre himself the fire did no damage.

Fouutl Dead. While tbe freight men of the I. and St. L. were unloading cars at tha freight depo;, they came across the dead body ot a man in one of the refrigerator cars. In eearching him for evidence to eslablt'sh his identify, they found a note in one packet tellins a Mr. 4zderson to get him a new hat from i:yan, the Hatter, 21 and 2:1 South Illinois street, who has all the latent at popular prices.
