So I did net müke t!ie railway r,utwenties understand aout the pass, and after bcth arms had been talked loose I said it was r.omstter; I would socner walk fjyhow. Still I shall leave Italy with aa unfriendly feeling toward" this read, and shall Co all 1 can to turn travel over same olher thoroughfare. Genoa was founded 200 years b?ore Christ, and ytt is not a very big town af:er all. "Genca is mainly celebrated in history for being the birthplace of the man who discovered Aruerci; and yet he wa not, strictly speaking, born in Geno:i, aid did nat discover Americ-t. Sschisiife! Oar heroes, our peds and goddes melt awy under the teirible alchemy cf isa.is, and history, that at first crowns the obscure with a wreath cf laurel, at last tars down the name she has worked fcr years to carve and fills the hungry maw of oblivion with the inanimate dust. One after another heroes. diC3verera, tcets and artists fads away. William Toll, Columbns, Shakppeare and many others have snffered cgain and again at tbe haad cf the historical vampire, and it would seem that none of us are absolutely safe. The youngest of us may yet live to leara that Lydia E. Pinkham wes not tbe author of her own vegetable compound. Thus we live and labor for half acentury to psrfect a balm that will kneck tbe bliud staggers higber than OXlderoy'e kite, and at last a vandal historian iobs us of our hard-won fams. I wonder that we have as much co'araje and lofty ambition as we have. Tte first dogo was elected ia 1313. I do not know what the duties of a doge were, nor what ualary he received; bat I am led tj believe that the psy was good. Genoi is a great place for the building of ship3. I have always dene what I could in Ämerici to reliev3 want, bnt where want teems to be tbe normal condition I allow nature to take her courte. The brpsara cf Italy glory iu their chame. They are gled they thought of it instead of yielding to a weak and foolish temptation to fritter away their young lives in manual labor. V'e arrived in Yerono day bef3re yesterday. Most everv one has heard of the ' Two Gentleiren of Verona " This is the place they came from. They never returned. Verona ia rot noted for its gsntlemen now. Perhaps that it is the reason I wa3 regarded 1 as euch a curiosity whea I came here. erosa is a pocd deal older thaa Chicasp, but the two cities have points of resemblance after all. When the southern simoon front the stocx yards 13 wafted across the vinegar orchards of Chicago and a load of Mormon emigrants get cut at the liocs Island depot and begin to move around and squirm and fmit tüe fragrance of crushed Limb3r3r checie, it reminds one of Verona. A Itrais Itand at Ills Funeral. Bo?ton. Ma , April 1" Mr. Josiih 1 Twifp, of Hollh, N. H., a man of eccentric habits of thought and manner, diel at his home in tbat piace to-day. The will as presented to the Judge of Probite, who refesed to set it up His properly will, therefore, be disposed cf ia accord&ncs with the State law. The Pretty Yomen of the Cabinet. New York World. But ehe will ba obliged to divide the honors there with Mrs. Manning, a'thouh they are entiTeJy diff-rent types. Mm. Vilas has a round, full fisure: in complexion fibs is inciired to be dark, though by no means what could be called a brunette : her hair is a dark brown, and her eyes are broTvn. Her features -ara very Email and regu'ar. Her hair sfce dretse3 hi?h, the front being waved, parted and brushed loosely back from her face. She teems quite timid in her manner, and is apparantly not quite certain tbat she likes all the ceremony to which she is now beirg introduced. Mrs. Manning, the wifa of the Secretary ot the Treasury, isqaiteUll and slight in figure. Her figure is very grace In 1, and one which carries rich draperies with much grace. Her small head la thickly
covered with soft, light brown hair, which the dretees hfch, wita a soft, curllDg fringe across the forehead. Her eyes are a d.rk eray. not large, but xprestv9. Mrs. Manning is easy and cordial in her manners, and always sescoa to have a pleasant word far each of her callers whea receiving.
