TIIE CONNECTICUT TRAGEDY.
Inqaett on the Johnson Family, the Victims of Tatidnj'i Tragedy. Gsrnrwicn, Conn.. April 22. Coroner Holt, of Bridgeport, began an inquest at the Selectmen's office here this morning in reg&ri to the Tlctims of the murders in the Johnson family yesterday. Iter. J. G. Jihnson, a Congregational minister, of Rutland, Yt., an uncle of Barclay Johnson, the young man rho shot his mother and sister and then killed himsslf, testified that there w no hereditary Insanity in the family. For the last six weeks the 7onn man his appeared somewhat peculiar. The witness could not account for ictanity on the part cf his nephew, except by his excessive devotion to his office daties which caused him to writs und werk at night and caused a strain on his mind. The witness produced a letter written in pencil noon note pacer, which was found in a pocket of Barclay Johnson after his death. Parts of the letter were read as .fellows: 'GEZEswica, Conn., 21?t Apri.'. "If 1 succeed in acccncpIisMncIwhat I.think must be done, a word or two of explanation will be probably received with interest. I think I am saving my mother and sister from an unhappy fate. If there is a just and generous God these two will go to the happiness which th;y deserve. If there is no G od then they will simply find their rest." At the close of the letter young Johnson wrote: "I am conscious of the enormity of what I have done and intend to go, bet at the same time I have a ecspiclon that I have become in Bine. Why did not sore one recognize my weaknes. iny freat need of help and help me while there wa3 time? Batt) be fVir, I suppose I shculd say, 'Why did I not help myself?' " The intermediate parts of the letter were filled with expressions of the writer's tender affection toward his father, metier and sister, and mingled with eelf accusation of all sorts cf ianla which his friends ay existed only In his imagination. The letter was written in a firm and very legible hand. Item from Unton City. Bpocial to the Sentinel. Ü5IOS City, April 22. The fire that partially destroyed Mrs. Hattie Kuecnt'a dwelling yesterday morning is generally supposed to be incendiary. The house having bsen vacant for a few days a key was found in Due of the rear doors and a strong odor of coal oil was prevalent on the premises. Her alleged liason with Dr. Fannestock last summer created quite a commotion in our city, during which a large number of our citiz9as vreie called int? the lisndolph Circuit Cjnrt to testify in divers prosecutions charging adultery, prostitution, ill-fame etc, ail of which resulted in much BCcial scandal, bad blocd and a separation of Dr. Fanneotock from his family. The fire aDd destruction ol the house were evidently intendedjtoiprevsnt Urs. K. from again becoming a resident on account of her bad cdor socially. Continued failing health on the part of John W. Staats, proprietor of the Drinham House, has resulted in its being leased. Mr. AVrn. Turpen, of Greenville, Ohio, took po3se.c8icn on last Monday mcrning.
