A Little Needle That Carried Marder With It. In the collection cf curiosities preserved in tbe Areenal ct Venice there is a key. of which the following singular tradition ii relattd: "About tho year 1GC one of tboss dangerous men in whom extraordinary talent ia only the foarfal aourca of crime and wickidce s ooyend that t ordinary insti came to establish himself as a merchant or trader la Venice. The stranger, who name was Tetaldo, became enamored of the daughter of an ancient houte, a'.readv affianced to another. Ho deruandtd her hand in marriece and was, ol course, rejected. EuragaJ at thia, he ktudied hnrr to be revenged. "Prcfcundly rkilhd la th mechanical aite, he allowed himself r.o rest until he had inverted the mcst formidable weapon which cculd be Inaginrd. This a key cf a larfo e'e, the hand'.o of which was ss co:ittructf d that it conUi Le turned round with little ditliculty; when turned, it discovered a f princr, whicii, on prf ;ure, launched from the other end a r.f idle or Jancst of -uca fuM'e Crr rets tht-t it entered into the flejh and burled itbflf there without leaving cxlernel trtce. Tebdldo waited in dlsuis at the door of the church in which the maidea beloved was abcut to receive the nupilal benrdicticn. The rsaibin cent the 6!cndcr sttel nnccrceived into the breast of the bridegroom. "The wounded man had no suspicion of injury, but seized with a sudden and sharp rain in the xnidetcf the ceremony, he fainted, and wan carried tohli hoose aruid the lamentations of the bridal party. Vain was all the tkill of the physicians, who ciuld not devise the canss of this strenee lilaeas, and in a few days he died. Tebaldo ei,'iin demanded the hand of tbe maMn from her parent?, and received a second refusal. Thy too, perished miserably in a few daja. Tbe alarm which these deatii? which appeared almost miraculous occasioned, excited the utmost vigilauco of tha magistrates; and when, cn clo?e examination of tbe bodies, the small Instrument was found in the gangrened tleeh, terror was univerea'; every cne feared for his own lite. Tbe maiden thus crcellv orphaned had passed tte first months of her mourning in a convent, when Tebaldo, hoping to bend her to his will, entreated to speak with her at the grate. Tbe face of the foreigner had ever been displeasing to her, but since the death of all those most dear to her it had become odious (as though she bad a pro sumption cf his puilt), ard her reply was meet decisive in the negative. Tebaldo, beyend hlmteif with rage, attempted to "wound her through tho prate, and tucceeded; tha obscurity of the place prevented his movements being observed. On her return to her rccpi tbe maiden felt a pain In her breast, ard, uncovering it, ehe found it spotted with a single drop of blocd. The pain incrcaced; the surgeons who hastened to her assistance, tanght by the past, wasted no time in conjecture, but, cutting deep into the woanded part, extracted the needle before any mortal mischief had commented and Faved the life cf the lady. The State Inquisition used every means to discover the hand which dealt theic insidious and irresisliblo blows. The visit of Tebaldo to the convent caused suspicion to fall heavily unon him. His hcteewas .carefolly searched, tho infamous indention discovered, and he perishod on the gibbet." Slf-Sopportlcc Women. I Indianapolis Labor Signal. 1 Of all persons who deserve encouragarnsnt and pre.ise cn account of endurance, patience and self sacrifice, as illustrated in tkäir ilvai of struggle against Iba besetmftnta and ruhfortunes which they are obliged to eacoaater, are worthy working women. In all tbe realm cf humanity none other than that c!as3 have begun to display such untiring devotion in pursuance of the duties involved in gaining honest self support. Wciren who find Ihemselvcc left on tlieir own resources have had to work their way through the world in the face of a societary body, with laws and customs solidly opposed to them. Fera long time it was not regarded proper for a woman to sell goods in ttores, notwithstandingthere was a pressing demand for them to do 10. The valliant men whose Ideas on the proper Ephere cf woman had crystalized ages ago, could not brook this innovation on their exclusive grounds, aud they first ridiculed, then opposed, then surrendered to the formidable but magnanimous foe. We need net go over the grounds of this controversy abont woman's sphere and her victcry at last. Sufiica it that her demands were conceded to the extent of filling certain positions which were occupied hitherto only by make. OMate years, as the equal suffrage movement has been more active and erlectual, the contest for place and living Weges las resulted in the concassion to woman cf fair play as pertaining to tne profesiors; pa that now we have our woman lawyers, doctors, preacher?, editors, etc., and still, pa the world moves, the whole woman element seems as intent as tver cn improving her condition, socially and practically. No class cf people has ever lived on closer margins acd appeared more tidily and decently In any civilized country than the respectable telf supporting women, and they have suffered far more from the faults and neglect of society than any other cUss. It is to be hoped that hereafter thtsa workers will ba rewarded in a manner and degree commensurate with their real merit. We remark with pleasure, as we limit this article for want of epice, that emplojers are getting bravely over the rather mean prejudice 8ga.ir.st the nse of seats for women clerks in Etores. In some of the hcus?s of our city the dictates if common tense and regard for rhytdoiogical law have come to humaai.s these places of trade. Buttered Omelet.
