A Haifa Unnured Workmen Were 11 r .ice ing Them Up at the Time-Great Kxcltment Many Taken to the Hotpltal. New York, April U. Etht five story tenement, on tbe south eids of West Sixtysecond street, between Tenth and Elevens avenue?, that had recently been put unier roDf, fell this afternoon while efforts wra ieing made to brace them up, that the jieldicg Ljundilion might be ma Je secure. The wreck complete, not a stick remained standing, tot a timber remained Y7fjo!e iu the entire ro77. lla'f a hunlred workmen were at work ia or about the buildings at the liaiv At leut thirteen of them were injured, nons fat!iy. It was said eooa after the accident ttu. twenty persons were birlei iu tha rain?, but up to a late hour nobody hid been fon.'id. Tue excitemont about the place iv&a so treat that it was difficult to c'o'.a i any reliable information as to who nrut have been lost, bat the gans of woikmea engaged in eeirchin; for remains found no clce to any object ot their search. The meat superficial examination of . the debris showed the ciuse of the disaster to be wretched workmanship and poor material. The mortar contained little cr no sand, but learn cr mud instead, and was wholly unfit far use. Thij and the fact that the building hud been erectei during the cold weather cf wet aud frozen bricks were directly the cau?e cf the col lapse. The builder, Charles A. Budlensick, who was rspoi8ibl9, left the neighborhood in a carries immediately after the dhaster and drove to h:s residence, in Ewt Siventyseventh street. Where be went from there nobody could learn. The police, who ar retted the reader bricklayer, Charlas Frank, cculd Lot find the builder. IJuddeisick ban been for veirs in trouble with the authorities on acccuntof the "eiin" buiMingi he has put np. The evidence given by Frank and Charles Swager, acotter bncilayer, is very damaging to Mr. JJaddensick. The ererllon of the building had been goirg cii sinco kst Dicember, during all the cold weather. The fourth Btory walls showed a weakness in a sudden thaw before the fifth itory was reached, arl had to be taken down. Workmen were forbidden to drry bonie scraps of timber left by the carfenfers. By the buildar'a order they were to be used iu filling the walls to save bricks, which were sometimes fit in by arrufuls. When a good thaw set in, the wa'ls began to weaken, and steps were taken to brace them up from both eads, so that they would tticfc togstLer until the roof could be put on and the end walls büiit. Thay steed for a week or two without, s far as could be ascertained, exciting th curiosity of the building department. The heavy warm rain of yesterday morning completed the work terun ty the thaw. This morning it was teen the three houses at the west end weie übimt to falL The founda'ion had bulged noticeably and the wall were thsky. Bailder Badiensick'a attenton wai called ta the fact, and he tet men to werk upon the walls, a,' d eighten carpenters vrero at work cn thi; when the cra:-h came. Tcere were roofers painters, lathers and plumbers, number lf, perhaps thirty, at work about ths pmiee at the time. Fifty msa tad been laid ofi, as some material had not arrived. About 3:1.' p. m. a shout of warnirg went up toat brorg'ot pale faces to many windows. The end bailditg toward Eleventh avenue was seen to totter and then fall with a thundercus noise. Both foundations and sidewalls had fa'len out, acd the body of the house, deptUed of its support, fell to tte cellar. Tfce building adjoining it, haylrg nothing to lean uron, fell next. Then the who!? row followed, like a Uce o! card houses. A continnocs roar followed that seemed to last mmy minutes, as one afier the other cf the tall baiidicgi went down. Workmen In buildings for blocks around, and people living on tne streets for half a mile about, were startled by the noise acd shock, and ia a very short time the locality cf the wrecks was packed with excited pe.ip'e. whose threats of Tengeance on the rclS3 builder filled the air. When the heavy chads of dasthad cleared away, the peo'e looked upon a heap of broken bricks and timers, piltd only a (Ow feet ftbofe Ifce löVel of the fetree, men with broken limbi and bruhvd faces were struggling out fro a utder the wreck, and dragging themieives r alnfnlly away. Shrieks and grcans wero heard from one or two places, and to there spots the people rusbed. Firemen and all available ambulances were summoned. I'ecple from all paria cf the city flecked there The Ilooevelt Hospital ambulances were first oa the ground, and carried away rine of the wcunded. Commissioner Brennan, of the Charities Department, undertook to direct the work of rescue, and Building Inspector D. Oench, cf the Fire Ccmrxiesicrere did work in the tame direc
tion. Four hock and ladder companies and the crews of three entice companies set to work to remove the debris. A iarg gang of wrrkmen was pre sd into service and iu fifteen rtinutea the labor of res3ue wai well underway. N?ght had let in before ths efforts were relaxed at all. One or two of the workman tfconht they heard a cry for help, but no person was foutd at either time. Near 7 o'clock Fire Chief Reeves thought he heard groans under the heap at the rear of the second builJine. Gangs went to work front and reir. At 7:30 a hole large enough for a firemen and two others to grops their way to the cellar was made. A. learch was made with a lamp, but nothing but ruins discovered. Nearly two hours later, in ths sime placs, g oacs came a nan canht in an upright position betwern many cros-i-is timbers and held fast. He was extrica'ed with difficulty.
