LEGISLATIVE NOTES,
A EoTeracnt oa Foot to Prolong the Session a Fen Dajs. Representative Loop Dlscu3sea the Joke Practiced Upon Him on Saturday. The Poet Laureate of tha Oeneral Assembly Submits an Appropriate Eulogry Other Notes. h'enator Fonlke will remain in the city a hert time after the Legislature adjoarc, ck :d& to the tickxms of hla wife. Senator liagee learrs for Washington tonight to receire Instractiona from the State I)rartment regarding the Stockholm misIa the caucus of Democratic Senators, Sat urday, Mr. Smith, cf Jennings, was selected fcr the position of President of the Senate to ncceed Eon. Rafus Magee. The position tf comes an important one, as there is a gen ial understanding that the Lieutenant Got- - error will resign. Messrs. Taylor, Helms, Gordon and others rote to questions of privilege Saturday, and . ill on account cf newspaper items. It ar pears that the Labor Signal and the Crisis -contained paragraphs to which the gentletuen objected, and they severally denounced the man who conveyed to tbe editors the information on which the articles were based. There was a very earnest movement on foot yesterday and last night to induce the juembere of the House and Senate to recon- - :-iuVr the vote by which adjournment was tiied for to day, but how far it was success Jul could not be learned. There are a numter of Bouse bills now in tbe Senate which ran be disposed of in a short time, and the argument is made that, as this legislation is ripe for aotion and if it goes over would take a ;;reat deal cf time two years hence tobring it to its present stage, a continuance of the session would really be in the interest of economy. A number are therefore in favor of continuing a few days longer, and the matter appears to be in some doubt. .Representative ratten "brought down the -House" Saturday evening by rising, after Jlr. Gordon and others had replied to certain newspaper attacks, and ssyisg: "Mr. Speak- - tr: When newspapers criticise, I pass." Mr. Patten has received his full share of abuse irom the Republican pitta of this city, but he is not afraid ef his popularity at home nor in the House, where he is second to none in the esteem of the members. In the prima ry election in Sullivan County, Mr. Patten had two opponents for the nomination, but ha received 2. ICO out of the 2,700 votes cast at tbe selection of a candidate, and the conscientious manner in which he has discharged bis duty will no doubt secure his return to the Legislature, if such should be hia desire. As he ia the author of the new Apportionment bill, which is particularly obnoxious to Republicans, tha organs of that party are more than ordinarily vindictive, l'atten, however, langhs at their railery, and 0es on in the discharge cf his duties, conscions that his people appreciate his record, which all faii-minded men will concede ta be an exceptionally gocd one. Eatnrday afternoon Representative Loup rose to a question of privilege, and said that he understood that Sena or McCoullough had referred to him as one of the members whose name was mentioned in connection with the defeat of the Telephone bill "for a consideration." He denounced the etate--ment as iahe, and called for a Committee of Investigation, lbe Speaker appointed Messrs. Say re, Robinson and Hanlon, but it - was soon learned that a friend of Loup had ' thought to joke him on the subject, and bad made the remark: only in a spirit of fan. No oce, in fact, would accuse Mr. Loup of such - a thing in am est, and the committee will report this morning, completely exonerating him. In this connection Mr. Loup isks that the following card be published: "I feel that it is but justice to say that I exonerate Senator McCailiugh from all blame in tha alleged charges safd to bs made by him against me, as set forth in a Sanday pap r. but bold my informants responsiole to deserved and severe censure for making false statements ic relation to a gentleman's honer as a legislator in presence of hearers, at least, and without a word of explanation as to the intention of perpetuating a joke. And it illy becomes a gentlemen to make tbat kind of a dodge to cover up a falsehood Any centleman fihonld be capable of discriminating between matters - that are subjects of jests and those that are rot; and it he has not tbat discrimination, he should at least have sense enough to keep quiet. A man's official honor is no more a subject of jest than is ths virtue of his wife, and therefore leaves no exc ose for a man who claims to have sensa enoojjh to be a Senator, or even a clerk of tbe Senate, to indulge in anythir of the kind; and the statements, no matter if they were made in a joke, leaves yon, in my estimation, as it should all good people, too nrarly allied to the family of Ananias to desire any further association with you. "J. C. Lou-." Upon the understanding that the House and Senate would both adjourn eine die to -day. the poet laureate of the General Assembly submits tbe following: CLfciv writtsx is thi legislative hall. ' The House and Senate see their parting day. Tha member voice no longer rings with glee, A i slowly now he picks his dnsty way To father tu his tut pcr-diem fed. . Kg fades tae legal landscape on his sieht H brood upon the work he here did do. AnJ frsses a speech which proves him always rlaa And which be trusts may pull him safely through 'Wlieo he ab all stand before hit people dear To jive account of ev'ry vote he cast. .And why one hundred days he should stay here. Why his ahouid fail and other bills should pass. Withla those pigeon-holes are laid to rest AU kind of resolutions, claims and bills, Tor each of which the mover did bis best. And swore they'd cur a hot of human lilt. Ho Speaker's voice nor that cf Morrison. Nor the shrill call of Rose so near the Chair, Tior cooing notes of gay Fltxpatrlcx's yawn, more shall brine them frora their dusty lair. Tor them co more tbe heated statesmen strive. Or lay awtke upon their beds at nicht. But still continues yet the State to thrive As though no stateusan bristle! ud lor fljhL ; t was no fault of their s yon well may say, Theas tills s re doomed to see the light no more. or 'twas by no means an auspicious day TTnea they were read at first upon the floor. Can they frora these old bills remove ths dust, VYben there's no lobby near ta push them through? Cid not tno "higher" education need Some rich endowment to sustain its lite? and could they stop, the common schools to feed, With Etate and Normal, and Purdue at ttrlfe? Some ratten' s bill prepared wlfh extra care May sges wait I ome de:ecU to supply; gome introduced by Gooding. Ootdon. Beeves, Retter, Rivsrs, Willard, Weir and HilL It wss too great a Passage for them all, Though feme reform the members all enjoyed. Ttey parsed a bill 'gainst games of Sunday bill, A moral measure championed by Loj J. They made reforms In agrlcultur'l fairs Ey driving out all kinds of thieving games; They made appropriations for repilrs And building, too, but passed some doubtful claims. Tbe Knlghts'own Home wss rotton to the core, And wltneses were brought frooi far aad nigh. It proved a sad event fcr John M. Goar, But increased the fees of Doorkcepjr Fry. Ort did the members to excitement yield, And rant around la fury on the .ioor; ADd when the roii-cali showed their doom was sealed. In explanation made themselves a bore. Let not the men whose bit's were haply passed, Deride the measures that are lying there. 'Twere better for tbe State if at the ieet .-ome other bills their lowly fate did share. The railroad pass, the sad eyed lobby's bow, .
Tbe soap and towels furnished by the State; lie "special privilege" of members now Are at an end-hare all run out of date. Far from the paths of city's busy life Tbe rural members soon will take their war Some to return to scenes of active strife, tut many more always at home to fctay. 'Twere well for such if on some distant main An oft-tried iriend should seek to know tbe csuse Which stopped the throes of legislative pain. And broug! ; their public life to sudden pause. Some melancholy scribe now here could say: "Oft have 1 seen them on a Sunday morn Dodging In and out of an alley way To brace their nerves with a favorite horn. Ttey were men of genius whose spirits brooked No counter will, who chaffed at all delay And oyer nice to see that they were booked Among tbe first that they might draw their pay. "One day we missed their voices in the hall As hltherward our weary footsteps turned. l'.ut 'twss no sad event, reporters all Were filled with joy, the body had adjourned. "Spring followed spring, and chill November's blast Followed chill November, and witn its speed Tbe people at tbe polls this verdict cast. Approach, my friend, for you can surely read TU I XPITAI'H. The men whose brittle lives thee ballots mark Mit represented us some years ago. We thought them full of flame, but, lo! the spark Of manhood in their natures had no glow. That which was right they fought with might and main, That which was wrong they struggled to have pass. Their effort to return was all In vain They stay at home, the bast place for their class. Fo this tbe verdict Is; we'll try no mora The men who waste the precious light of dar. So stand aside, we may select a boar, But you have had your full amount of play. To such as earned the people's best reward, And are returned another term to serve, The fate of theve will place upon their guard. And teach them from their duty ne'er to swerveFOUND DEAD. lure. Mary Strubs Dies Probablv From an Overdose of Laudanum. The neighborhood six miles west of the city on the National Road, was cansiderably excited yesteiday morning by the discovery cf the dead body of Mrs. Mollie Strubs, wife cf Jcse rh 81rubs, in her bsd. The crying of tbe children attracted the attention of a tesier-by, and upon going in he found the nether on the bed. with her six month's old babe crying by her side Word was sent to the city aDvl Kregelo A Whitfett rrerared the body for burial. The Coroner was notified and will visit the place this rccrninr to hold a post mortem. Mrs. Strubs was about thirty years of age. and leaves a husband and two children. The oldest being four years of ae. Her hctband is a brick maker, a id at the titce of his wife's death was at th residence cf seme of his relatives near Crown Hill, where it seems he goes frequently o Saturday, and remains till Sunday night or Monday morning. A bottle that had contained lacdanum was found in the room where Mis. Strubs' body lay, and from the fact, as stated by some of the neighbors, tbat she hid been in the habit of taking laudanum for medicinal purposes, it is presumed she by mistake took an overdose, which caused her death. She was of a cheerful temperamint, but to one or two of her friends she had said on former occasions that she was "tired of life," ana out of this grew the rumor that she had possibly committed suicide. This, however, is incorrect, as she and her husband have been understood to have lived quietly and peacefully together, 'with nothing to cause her to commit co rash an act. PERSONAL, MCNTION.
